The theory originally used only gets you so far. Ironically the simpler design would've netted a more "F1 sounding" result, as that's what they used in F1. That's almost the opposite of what a "sleeper" is. The idea of a sleeper is a very fast car that doesnt look, and preferably sound, fast. Like...take a grocery getter, give it a supercharger and a decently strong muffler to get the sound down, etc, maybe short tubes before the cats. The concept is that people think your car is slow then you smoke em at the track. A car that sounds super fast at 30mph is...basically the opposite.

Very curious to see what you could do with a four-cylinder turbo engine. It's the world's most ubiquitous engine configuration and it often gets maligned due to the unsavory things a lot of shoestring budget folks have done to them. Wondering if a megaphone and tasteful flow-through resonator would clean up the sounds on a turbo inline-4 and make something special instead of just another tone among a dozen aftermarket tones.

I'd love to see what you guys could do with one of the more hated sounding engines: Ecoboost Mustang (or Focus RS) I've already managed to get my Mustang sounding pretty good with a semi-tuned resonator pipe and an intentional restriction (similar to your megaphone, just the other way around), it's got a nice trumpet sound to it on accel/high load... But it needs work, it gets some nasty resonance on light load and low RPM cruse.

@@FluidMotorUnion We are curious as to what about zipper pipes dont affect sound like x pipes? The setup was purely for testing the effect on sound, not for looks. Also interested in understanding why you feel stepped primaries are needed? We are aware of many great sounding cars (LFA, Zonda, that Aventador you just showed) without stepped primaries. So they are not a requirement for great sound, but do help broaden the torque band slightly.
@FluidMotorUnion2 ай бұрын
Been following your guys build for a min super impressive in every aspect. I never thought you get those welded heads to hold!!! Expanding the pipe diameter quickly splits the pressure wave. This can add to the pitch by having more pressure waves present in the system. More pressure waves… more “buzz” or vibration that is possible at a lower rpm. As far as the zipper pipe. We’ve tested every bank blending configuration over the years. Power is dependent on placement and location- but on sound these things are true: Nothing sounds better than an 45 degree x. All x’s will induce turbulence and can only ever truly scavenge in a narrow RPm window. While zipper pipes are used by some people who say they give a certain tone… they induce more rasp and turbulence that you can hear everywhere else. Honestly I feel the they are gimmicky and offer no advantages over a smooth merge x. Would love to colab with you guys and get a proper x and our megaphones to see if we can get that thing to really sing…
