If calcium causes excitability, why would less of it (hypo) cause muscle contraction? You’d think if a cell is excited, it would contract??

Hi there! Here is a message from our scholars regarding your question! "Calcium, particularly ionized or “free/unbound” calcium levels, facilitates nerve conduction, muscle contraction, and muscle relaxation (Suneja, 2019). Muscular contraction relies upon myosin-linked regulation sites located on myosin (think a protein acting like a “molecular motor”) and low calcium blocks these sites (Szent-Györgyi, 1975). During muscle contraction, and given sufficient availability of ATP (energy), myosin “motors” bind with another protein called actin (Cooper, 2000). Calcium triggers this action via nerve impulses, with the muscular cell’s sarcoplasmic reticulum releasing stored calcium into the cell’s cytosol. An increase of calcium concentration signals muscular contraction as it binds to two accessory proteins located on actin: tropomyosin and troponin (Cooper, 2000). This process has difficulty occurring if there is an inadequate amount of stored or available calcium, and the muscle cell’s resting potential (electrical charge) increases due to increased neuronal cell permeability (acting upon the muscle cell), leading to increased excitability and tetany (Hall, 2010)."

I went on picmonic website and its not allowing me to watch more than one picmonic a day without paying, I love these youtube videos and was very excited to utilize the website but unfortunately cannot.

I've enjoyed watching many of the picmonic videos and I thought they were terrific. So I went a second time. First time to absorb the content, second time to note the style. And what I discovered is that lately you are constantly pointing to explicit graphics. What should be a creative, funny, and INFORMATIVE intro to electrolytes features an inordinate number of XXX explicitness. Nevertheless it is an effective technique (if you're into that stuff). I wish a greater number of presenters would keep their stuff discreet and seek out more effective EDUCATIONAL approaches. This is why KZbin browsing requires extreme caution, regardless of how popular the channel. Yeah, you disseminate A LOT of material, BUT few presenters stick to the content. Please do not get sucked into the obscenity black hole, as so many male lecturers tend to do.
