A family member just bought a summer house out on the Long Island coast, so needless to say, but I’ll be doing a lot of fishing there this summer. I’ll basically be a first time marine fisher so I’ve started doing my research and just came across your channel today and what I love is that it’s not only informative, but entertaining as well. Thank you for making these videos, John!

Hey John, love your videos and have learned a lot from you over the past few years! Try using sprite or soda water with your batter instead of water. It makes a really airy and light batter due to the carbonation.

Dear Mr. Skinner, I watched almost all your fluking videos and learned all I now know from them - they are amazing. I've got rods, reels, buicktails and Gulps you suggested, that includes John Skinner bucktail jigs too. Bit by bit I am gathering the info on how to catch fluke from your generous sharing and my results have significantly improved. However, there is one skill you definitely mastered and often touched but never concentrated on. I am talking about the art of reading charts and choosing spots and how it relates to tides, currents and winds combo. I am sure most of your subscribers would be very interested in watching such a video. Would you consider shearing this piece of knowledge with us?
@benwilkens62896 жыл бұрын
Excellent video. I especially enjoyed your insight into trying to maintain a drift when the wind and tide are fighting. Also, very cool trick using the gulp bucket between spots to keep your bait fresh, I’ll be using that one from now on. And finally, that fried fluke looked really good. Cheers.

I enjoy your content very much. Super informative, ive picked up quite alot watching. Just a few pointers from a cook, 1) try seasoning the fish not the batter. 2) a neutral flavored oil like canola,peanut, corn etc will impart less flavor on the fish and will have a higher smoke point. 3) try seltzer water or a mild flavored beer in the mix instead of water.
@JohnSkinnerFishing6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for those. I'm no cook, but my family hasn't caught on yet.

I really hope you get a discount on your Gulp for as much of their product you've personally helped move. If not you're going to have to come out of retirement to keep stocked! Also, you might try a simple beer batter: 12oz beer (lager nothing fancy), 1 beaten egg, 1t salt, 1c AP flour. Pinch of pepper and garlic powder to taste (you could add your pepper flakes). Makes a light crispy batter.

@JohnSkinnerFishing6 жыл бұрын
There are still some in the bay, but the main body that has been around for about 6 weeks has moved out headed toward the ocean. It's probably a food thing. They arrive in the spring around the same time as squid.

Hey John any chance your planning on doing a gps/depth finder tutorial? I just got the same unit and feel like I could definitely be utilizing it much better.
@JohnSkinnerFishing6 жыл бұрын
The thing with that unit is there are so many screen options. I just keep hitting "view" until I get the split plotter/fishfinder view. Then anything you mark shows up there, and you can see your tracks.
@mikea78896 жыл бұрын
John Skinner Fishing yea it's kind of a pain in the ass I did figure out you can hide some of the different views in the screen options which is nice. Thanks John I really appreciate everything you do.

Does having a bucktail when fluking have any advantage over say.. just a regular lead head jig and a gulp mullet?
@JohnSkinnerFishing6 жыл бұрын
It does. Several years back I tried to be lazy and just put the gulps on untied bucktail heads. I compared them to the productivity of others in the boat, kids no less. The bucktails definitely outfished leadheads for us. The hair ads buoyancy and profile and gives it a more natural fall.
@Johnathan_defaultskin6 жыл бұрын
John, what do you think is best for a weight when fishing deeper water for fluke, a sinker or a heavy bucktail
@JohnSkinnerFishing6 жыл бұрын
I never use a sinker.
@russseff12466 жыл бұрын
John, I enjoyed the video. Very educational. Quick question, is it legal to continue to fish for a species when you have your possession limit on board? I thought the answer was no. I'm not trying to be the internet fish police here, but I think it's important for people to understand and be in compliance with the regs.
@brendanwoerner33526 жыл бұрын
Russ Seff yes it is! As long as you don’t possess more than you keep. You can catch and release here in New Jersey and NY. Party boat skilled guys do it frequently. In areas of the west coast it’s different and you need to stop fishing entirely once you obtain your limit.

Speaking of seasonal professions, why do u think the sound dies so much for fluke in the later summer?
@JohnSkinnerFishing6 жыл бұрын
Not sure. I can tell you it seems to die earlier every year. I have a log entry from July 26, 2009 where the kids and I had 167 fish, and 5 over 21''. We're certainly not seeing that kind of fishing so far into July like we used to. I think the quantity and size of the sandeels that are around probably have an impact.
@ryanlynch33036 жыл бұрын
+John Skinner Fishing I have a Friend who fishes central LI sound exclusively and he still gets his keepers through august, so there's still some fish that linger there but you have to work muuuch harder to get them. Once the porgies invade it seems like that's when the fluke die out in my area

Hey John, you mentioned 'seasonal progression'. Last weekend (June 9-10) I was KILLING it on fluke at a spot I tried out. I marked a lot of spots ranging from 13' to 20 feet to try this weekend. Nothing. Nada. A very few shorts. Could this be related to seasonal progression? There's still a ton of sandeels in the water which they were spitting out all last week. Thoughts?

They're on the move. If you're in the Sound though, we should be in the heart of that season now but it's been really spotty and inconsistent.

There mouth does get penetrated..The weight of the bucktail makes a larger hole and gives them leverage to toss it..A 4/0 spinner-bait trailer hook has been heaven sent for us. Been jiggin deep for many years before it became the fad....Flukerr....Lets fish and compare notes..
@JohnSkinnerFishing6 жыл бұрын
I agree that a heavier fixed-hook jig could work a hole in the mouth, so I use swing hooks on everything 2-ounce and heavier. I haven't noticed fish spitting the bucktails on the deck. Those that I pointed out in the video were on the 1/2-ounce teaser. The good thing is I can only recall one decent fish lost on my boat so far this season, and I'm pretty sure we got that one anyway when we dropped back down.
