Fluorescent Rock Hunting at Vermillion Point

Sam and I hit a Lake Superior Beach searching for syenite rocks with fluorescent sodalite, sometimes called "Yooperlites". We found some, as well as some other fluorescent things.

I night hunt with my UV down here in FL for fossil shells. A couple of weeks ago I discovered that the eyes of tree frogs glow blue and also that I can briefly levitate when a pair of glowing blue eyes is suddenly next to my feet.

Yoopelite hunting is definitely on my bucket list. Bought flashlights and had a trip drafted as honeymoon part 2. But family life happened. Now our daughter is getting older it might happen in a year or two. She has been collecting rocks around home and beach trips. Definitely has interest at age 6. Great channel!! The Yooperlites at the end looks like glowing campfire embers. I took my UV light and found out my parakeets heads light up. They have ultraviolet feathers. I got great news today about my tumbler. The Rock Shed got ahold of the company and they are replacing my tumbler. The Rock Shed is awesome! Thanks for sharing your Yooperlite hunt.

Walking on the beach in the dark didn't bother me at all. Maybe if I was alone I'd feel different. The guy we met there told us that he once saw a wolf there before dark, so that was a bit concerning. Nancy and I went to a couple Lake Huron beaches looking for Yooperlites with no success. One beach was pretty remote and she was a little worried about bears. There aren't wolves down here, but there are bears. Bears aren't really a threat unless you get between them and their cubs though, so I don't worry about them at all.

A lot like lightning bugs, but easier to catch. If you put the rocks in a jar and keep them until the next day, they'll still light up, unlike lightning bugs.

If no one else has commented....in my limited experience, along the yooperlite area of Lake Superior (and have seen it elsewhere), when a rock glows the dark red color, as shown in the video, it's always been an apparent algae which can be rubbed off with some effort. Notice when the rock is flipped over, it's not so red...likely the side that was against the ground. If this is truly a red glowing rock, I'd like to know what it is; anyone pls comment! Cool looking regardless! Also, next time y'all are out looking for syenite containing sodalite, keep an eye out for all the apparent sodalite dust in the black sand. The magnetite sans is often full off the glowing orange specs and can occasionally dust an area of rocks making you think you found the motherlode of yooperlites. The black sand on Lake Michigan has it as well. Another appreciated video Rob; keep up the good work!

Someone else said that the red rock was because of algae. I didn't think that was the case because the guy who found it said that the rock is brown or gray when dry. He has found them before and told me that we might find some that night. The other reason that I thought it wouldn't be algae is that it was in the shallow water where the rocks get rolled around by the waves, keeping them pretty clean. Now that a second person (you) has said that it's algae, you've got me wondering. You make a very good point about the bottom of the rock. I don't have the rock or I'd cut and find out. Thanks for the comment. I've been wondering about that one.

Rob, I'm originally from New Jersey, now in Ferndale, WA, but years ago I visited the Sterling Mine and Museum, which is notable for it's Fluorescent Zinc minerals. This adventure brought back those memories of long ago:) Cheers, Rik

I've heard that New Jersey has some great fluorescent minerals. There's a museum at Michigan Tech. University called the A.E. Seaman Mineral Museum. It has a really nice display of fluorescent minerals. The display is fun because they mostly look pretty boring, and then when they switch on the U.V. light, it's amazing. Then the light switches to a different wavelength and other rocks come to life. Fun stuff.

The red one you found is algae. But there are yooperlites that do glow red not orange I found 2 this spring. They are very cool.

I don't think there was algae on that rock because it was in shallow water where they're constantly being tumbled. Also the guy who found it told me about them before he found it. He also said that they're gray or brown in regular light. I think he would have noticed algae on them. I wish I had one of those, because I'd cut it to be sure. I haven't seen a rock that glows red, but with the same pattern as a Yooperlite. That would be cool too.

The sodalite in this syenite does not glow red. More than likely, it is limestone that is made up of calcite which does glow red.

@@captpaul8827 Petoskey stones glow a pale yellow. This is the first rock that I have seen glow a bright red. It sure looked cool, whatever it was.

I can't wait to go back to Superior and find some Yooperlites! I was recently at the Princess Sodalite Mine in Bancroft, Ontario thinking I would score some sodalite that glows. Turns out the solid blue sodalite isn't fluorescent, it needs the other mineral to glow. Beautiful finds and I love how you get Sam out to join you for the hunts.

Gorgeous rocks. They remind me of a distant galaxy you'd see through a powerful telescope. Not sure if you remember, but you gave me some great advice regarding tumbling rocks & the proper grit to use. I was having trouble with getting a polish on them. You recommended better grit from The Rock Shed & to use 8,000/2 Micron Aluminum Oxide as the final polish instead of the 1,200 grit I was told to use. All the grit came today, plus 5lbs of Mexican Lace Agate. You saved me alot of aggravation, so for that I want to say 'Thank You again'

I couldn't 'find any in Lake Huron either, although I've only looked twice. This was the southeastern part of the lake and I know they find them in the Keweenaw Peninsula too. I've heard that they can be found where agates are found, but I don't know how true that is.

Yooperlites are so much fun! Its funny how some of them have barely any glowing spots and some are like super bright, like a volcano! so its the sodalite that makes them glow? Ive seen the rocks during the day and you really cant tell them from ever boring grey and black spotted rock on the beach. Totally boring looking rocks normally. But under UV, they are fire! I mean they look like they are on fire! Great video! I love the yooperlites! Were you using yooperlite flashlights too? Just curious. Thanks for sharing!

Yes, you use UV flashlights with filters to see them across the beach, or under the water.

We were all using U.V. lights of various brands. My light is a Convoy S2. I sent a note to the camera shy guy we were with to ask what his lights were. They were more powerful than what I had, and I don't think they cost any more.

I was out doing something like that In BC Canada a couple weekends ago looking for sodalite. Isn’t it so much fun doing night hunts like that!? That orange just pops right out at you. Looking at them in the daylight, you would never know something remarkable is hiding right in front of your eyes!

Yes, it's so different than other kinds of rock hunting. I don't have a lot of use for rocks that look boring under normal light, since I usually polish them or make something out of rocks. For that reason, I wasn't too excited about hunting them the first time. I was surprised at how much fun it was though. It's a thrill to catch one in your light.

Yes, we were going to share my light, but we met those people on the beach and he borrowed an extra one they had. It was more powerful than mine. He found almost all the rocks between the two of us because he was hunting the rocks right on the shoreline. I was up just a bit more on the beach where it was mostly sand. If you look at the beginning of the video where it was still light out, you'll see what I mean. I didn't really care who found them, since I was busy filming.

Which wavelength black light were you using? My son in Big Rapids wants to get up to Da Yooper to find some yooperlites.

365 nm. I use a Convoy S2 and it works well. I hear the Convoy C8 is even better. The guy we met on the beach had a couple other lights that worked really well too, but I don't know exactly what models they were. Sam and I both also have cheap $10-20 lights that don't do much at all.

That was a very illuminating video ! I recently learned from another rock/ beach glass hunter that there are some pieces of beach glass that will flourese under UV light. It’s called Uranium glass. I had to check out my wife’s beach glass collection and some of it does glow under UV light.

Illuminating! Ha! Uranium glass is the same a "depression glass", I think. My mother in law has a collection of that. I'll have to take my light over there next time and check it out. I have something called neodymium glass that changes colors under different types of light. We have two different lights in our bathroom. I think one is fluorescent and the other is incandescent. It's fun to put the glass on the counter and switch the lights back and forth. It goes from green to purple. I don't think I have looked at that under U.V. light. That's kind of how I feel about these. They are really fun to hunt for and they look super cool under U.V. light, but they're not really good for much else. You can make jewelry out of it, but then you have to go around pointing a U.V. light on it if you want it to look good. I have tumbled it, slabbed, it and my son in law made fridge magnets out of some. I have videos of all of those if you're interested. This wasn't in the thumb, it was on Lake Superior in the eastern U.P. They can be found pretty much anywhere between Grand Marais and Whitefish Point, as far as I know. My sister has found them in the Keweenaw Peninsula.

If you had enough you could cut small rock tiles.. Would take awhile though, so definitely a labor of love, not economics.

Nancy is right that the lighting would be pretty expensive to do that. The light is also bad for your skin, which makes displaying these safely a problem. I agree that would be a cool looking wall though. What would be even more fun would be to tile a wall with different minerals that glowed under different wavelengths. In normal light, it would be a boring gray wall. Then, when different wavelengths of lights were turned on, the wall would show a mosaic picture of some sort.

Not sure how to answer how powerful! Rob’s Convoy works fine, and I also love my old Alonefire, with filter, because they both are smaller and lighter. Even the little $20. Alonefire on Amazon would work! My FS Hunter Pro has the bigger batteries, 5000mAh, 3.7V Li-ion, rechargeable! So maybe that is the answer to how powerful it is. Hope this makes sense. Just make sure the flashlights has a filter. The cheep ones do not, and make the Yooperlites look purple, instead of like a glowing ember.

There are fluorescent rocks found in many places around the world, but I have not heard of these being found in other places. For these, you need a 365 nm U.V. light. stronger lights make them light up brighter. Different wavelengths are better for some minerals.

All the beaches in the eastern U.P. seem to be pretty good for hunting Yooperlites, as long as they're not too easily accessible and therefore over hunted.

I have not did well searching for yooper rocks yet but I always end up leaving too soon. I found small ones in western Lake Michigan or they are too big to move.

Better Yooperlites just glow more than lesser Yooperlites. Some glow a lot, others just have a few spots that fluoresce.

Rock nerd challenge- find them in the day with no uv light! I found 2 north of manistee this year that way! Honestly didnt think it was possible maybe i got lucky. Went hunting at night too and didn't find any. Go figure!

I would not be surprised that you could find them in the daytime. I have found a couple rocks during the day that I wondered about, but didn't bring them home to check. I need to start carrying a light with me, even in the daytime. Do you find many Yooperlites in Lake Michigan? I have heard that they can be found there, but are pretty scarce. I haven't had any luck the two places I looked in Lake Huron.

@@MichiganRocks this year was the first time ive looked for them. Usually i Petoskey hunt while im on vacation in the manistee area. But yes, found two in lake Mich this year. Saw some at rock shops and noticed the plain grey with black flecks and no pink, so i picked those up as i was hunting. Out of about 20 i brought in to look at under uv, teo of them were Yooperlites. I ws super stoked!

They guy we met on the beach had two other lights with him, and Sam borrowed one of them. His lights were more powerful. They only glow under U.V. light. It has to be a decent quality 365 nm light.

No, I don't sell any rocks online of any kind, rough or polished. Kingsley North and the Rock Shed both sell rough rock, including crazy lace agate. I'd suggest checking them both out. They are so pretty - how do you display them to best advantage?

That's the problem with these. They are just boring gray rocks under regular light. I have seen some designs for boxes that you can make with built in lights to display them, but the light isn't good for you, the lights are usually pretty expensive, and they can't be left on for long periods because they get hot. My son in law cut some into space themed shapes, glued magnets on the back and has them displayed on his fridge. He has a U.V. light nearby to show them off to anyone who would like to see them glow. I don't have many left. I have a couple slabs and a couple whole rocks left over after David made his magnets. They're not on display for the reasons I gave above. I didn't bring any home this year. I delete the spam as soon as I see it. We had some friends over for a bonfire last night, so I didn't get to most of the comments until today. We walked to the right (east) past where the river comes out now. The river mouth is extremely small and only ankle deep.

By the way, I'm not telling anyone to not use Polly Plastics grit, but the main problem I had with it was no matter what kind of stage I was in & the amount I would use, I always ended up having a 1/4" of unused sluggy grit on the bottom on the barrels. I don't have this problem at all with grit from The Rock Shed. Definitely a far superior grit

That's good to know. I have never used Polly Plastics products, but I figured the polish would be the biggest problem. I can't understand why the other grits would also be a problem.

@@MichiganRocks Yes, you were definitely right about the grit being the biggest problem. Using the grit from The Rock Shed & comparing it to using the Polly Plastics grit has made a huge difference. The rocks grind down alot better with The Rock Shed grit & I'm not left with a 1/4" of unused grit sludge on the bottom of the barrel. No wonder it took so long to go through the stages
