Dominic's instruction is in such a down to earth manner that we "amateurs" can speak rationally to our plumbing contractors with confidence. He is a real value added asset to your company. In addition, I've now learned our Sloan Royal Flushometers are about 67 years old. Just now giving us a little trouble. What a great product. Thanks.

I'm jealous of that shiny new valve you're working on. I need a two foot breaker bar on my spud wrench, and another wrench to hold back on the valve body, just to get the dang cap off of the 100 year old valves I have to repair.
@MoltenMetalCasting8 ай бұрын
On flushometers like that I remove the valve body and mount it in a chain vise then remove the cover with a pipe wrench. That is for old beat up valves. For nicer looking valves you can thread a 1 1/2 inch coupling onto the vacuum breaker threads and mount it in a vise using the coupling. You still need to back up the spud wrench when you remove the cover but it is more manageable.

In an attempt to repace the vaccum breaker, I used a spud wrench at work in order to loosen the nut located on the right side of a toilet. Unfortunately, I somehow caused a leak from where the nut is and ended up having to turn the water off. It required a lot of force loosening that nut. Did that end up damaging it? Also, would Teflon tape help with fixing it? Thanks.

I have a question regarding the flow ring on the diaphragm, how is it flipped to change the rate? As in the procedure for being able to remove the ring to flip? Thank you
@sloanvalve2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for asking. This should help: You may referring to the “refill head” that can be flipped on the A38A & A36A diaphragm assembly, the black “flow ring” is the loose, flat smooth ring the slide. On Sloan A38A 3.5 gpf Diaphragm kits, there is a blue fixed ring (refill head) positioned where the black guide tube meets the rubber diaphragm; the blue refill has a beveled step down outer edge seated against the diaphragm (has “SIDE 2” molded into the face against the rubber), and a squared outer edge facing down, towards the black guide tube. This is the refill head that can be flipped when used on old 4.5 gallon per flush toilets (made prior to 1977). To flip the blue refill head, Grip the black guide tube with a towel in one hand, and the rubber molded disc on the top of the diaphragm assembly with the other hand, and unscrew the parts; lift the blue flow ring off the top of the black guide tube, flip it and re-install it, now with beveled step down edge (SIDE 2) facing down the black guide tube. This will increase the volume to 4.5-gpf (Gallons Per Flush). The reverse will work on the A36A 4.5 gpf diaphragm kit to reduce the volume to 3.5-gpf; same refill head on black in color. The blue color is to distinguish bevel up for 3.5 kits, and black is bevel down for 4.5 kits during assembly process in the factory. Because of the increase in flow rate to the closet from flipping the blue refill head, please take care to properly adjust the control stop for a smooth, no-splashing flush; during the flush, the rim wash swirl should not climb in the bowl to reach the rim, it should stay low in the bowl or finish with the swirl into the trapway at the bottom of the bowl. The Flow Ring: On most of our closet diaphragm kits (ROYAL, REGAL, & G2/SOLIS/ECOS), 1.28, 1.6, 2.4, 3.5, 4.5 kits, there is a loose flat smooth ring that slides up and down on the black guide tube which is the flow ring. This ring is a restrictive flow ring, it is not meant to be flipped (it is symmetric), but in cases where (during the flush) the flow pressure to the closet needs an increase in flow rate, the ring can be removed (clipped off) to start the siphon rate quicker in the closet. This will increase the volume slightly overall, but it will increase how quick the siphon starts at the beginning of the flush. After removing the flow ring, please take care to properly adjust the control stop for a smooth, no-splashing flush; during the flush, the rim wash swirl should not climb in the bowl to reach the rim, it should stay low in the bowl or finish with the swirl into the trapway at the bottom of the bowl. HOWEVER, the caveat is that if the plumbing system flow pressure is below 10-12 psi flow rate, then removing the ring can cause a run-on condition because then there is not enough back pressure in the valve body to force a positive bypass in the diaphragm to shut off the valve. Most plumbing codes, for commercial properties, will call out a minimum flow pressure requirement of 25-Psi flow rate, not for the valve, but for the commercial water closet (flush valve toilets), for a proper evacuation and drain line carry.

1:23 - I have been impressed over the years with your chrome finish. Please tell me the best cleaner to use to keep them in the best shape. I know from experience that chlorine bleach destroys the luster in a very short period of time with no resolution but to replace the valve. 19:38 - Your Continental cover has no flats. So, I'd have to use an oil filter wrench to get this one apart?
@sloanvalve Жыл бұрын
Hi Gary, sorry for the delay. We hope the following advice helps: 1:23 - We only recommend mild dish soap in a spray bottle and lightly spray the towel and wipe the chrome, then use a dry towel towel to clean and dry. If there are difficult stains it is best to use an ammonia free window cleaner or white vinegar, lightly wet the towel and work the areas needing cleaning, then use a lightly water dampened towel to wipe off the solution, and then a dry towel. For hard scale build-up or bonded contaminents on the chrome finish, try a mild chrome polish, OR use ‘0000’ steel wool and work the areas to clean and VACUUM up the steel fibers that shed during cleaning; do NOT use a wet cloth to clean up the fallen steel fibers for they will begin to rust and stain the chrome finish or porcelain of the fixture. 19:38 - We recommend using a strap wrench to prevent scratches to the chrome finish. Sloan offers EBV22 Strap Wrench (Code# 0305823); if replacing the inside cover, use the A71 Continental Inside Cover, Code# 0301221. For any further questions, please reach out to techsupport@sloan.com. Thank you!
@Gary-ts6dh Жыл бұрын
@@sloanvalve Thank you. That helps greatly. I'm attempting to change the protocol for cleaning the bathrooms in our restaurants and want to offer something to replace the 'Dowse-everything-in-undiluted-chlorine-bleach' for sanitizing purposes. I expect they're just leaving the bleach on the fixtures after application for it to cause such a discoloration of your chrome finish (looks ugly -- and even appears dirty -- after only a few years using bleach in this manner to sanitize the fixtures). I may also check out the mild chrome polish to get the luster back.

Awesome video finally the real expert explains this. Thanks for this training video. I wish he had spent a little more time on the diaphragm part since they use 5 or 6 different types for urinals vs toilets and flow amount. In the on-line catalog they have so many different to choose from and I want to keep just 1 or two on my truck for urinals. Will they fit and what are the color codes? The stop valve repair kits also show 2 different ones for 3/4" or 1" but I don't know how to tell the difference in the old ones. One of my customers has 10 different urinals both Zurn and Sloan -it seems the parts are interchangeable on the basic models- at least that what they tell me at the parts counter.
@sloanvalve3 жыл бұрын
Doug, thanks for reaching out. The diaphragms are all the same dimensionally. They each have different features which enables the change in the flush volume but you can use any diaphragm on any valve (except for the G2, ECOS, & Solis valves. They use a different style of diaphragm) and it will fit. Generally a 3/4" supply line is used with urinals and 1" supply is used with water closets. There are, of course, exceptions. There should be a series number stamped on the bonnet of the control stop. We are currently using the H700 series but you can also get kits for previous series, H600, H540, etc...Hope this helps.

I've changed hundreds of these and still learned alot from this video.(the reason for the dripping at the vaccuum breaker) Question, today I had a flushometer dripping around the valve body cap (a rare place to leak) I replaced the diaphram plus cap. Still leaked. Changed the valve body, still leaked same place. Changed to yet another valve body and same thing. Could this be caused by the supply stop check valve not working properly , letting water flow backwards.? We've had pressure fluctuations alot lately. Thanks

It turns out my old Sloan does not have a groove fir a vacuum breaker. After a number of diaphragm changes and lots of bangs after a flush, the shut off valve started leaking and then the toilet would not stop running:( I tried to open the valve , but could not unscrew it, or didn’t know how to do it . So had to call a plumber... $400 later and not more than 5 minutes of work, he changed the valve and it all works. I feel stupid:) I got the Sloan wrench, though, maybe next time I’ll be more prepared:) Do those diaphragms have a warranty? I now have 3 of them quite new

........ I came looking for information because I have been hearing a drip-drip in the bathroom toilet/sink area. Naturally, I had a heart attack for days until I figured out that the dripping sound is coming from the pipe that goes into the commode. ........ Fortunately, I can now jump online and come up with the name of the thingamidge - flushometer - in a few minutes unlike when I wanted to change out the 50 year old one for a new one 20 years ago when I went to a plumbing store with gestures and hand signals! 🙄😁🤣 ........ All I need now is to know what part to buy so I can prepare everything from my handyman friend. ....... PS: I/we didn't know the water could be shut off from the valve, at all. I literally had a water shutoff installed for the toilet years ago!😣😥

You need a degree to work on these, and I doubt that all plumbers have this degree. Would be nice if the reps on the phone did not give you wrong numbers when you are ordering parts, as i've experienced- ordered 2 parts that don't fit. I have a 100 year old house, Sloan valves in use when I bought it. One valve with cream colored inner cover, and it flushes SLOOWLY with the flow control (80 psi) fully open. After taking it apart, lots of teflon tape and rope, and plumbers putty everywhere, it is missing the vacuum breaker, breaker tube is very short (not code, but that's the way it is, as the the supply is too close to the toilet) and it does not appear to be OE -breaker tube is not flanged. AND, No locking ring on the tailpiece.

Garbage products. These units create more waste more than anything. Terrible design only giving around 1/4 in. wrench grab knowing that leaks create a seized connection between the housing cap. Horrible, terrible product waste of money and taxes. My opinion of course

Welp if you wanted me to use the right tools you should have provided them when we bought thousands and thousands of dollars in your valves. Unfortunately we're maintenance techs. I've already purchased thousands of dollars in hand tools. I'm getting tired of manufacturers making up new tools we have to buy just for basic general maintenance on a damn urinal. So ima use my channel lock pump pliers that I already have 8 different sizes and 2 of each because that's how it is. Your chromes getting jacked up and I'm going to complain to any of your sales reps about your inferior products.
