Toilet Repair flush-o-meter

Flushometer won't flush? A common problem in my service area of Brooklyn, New York. There are several brands ie: Sloan, Gem, Coyne Delaney, Zurn, Toto, etc. They all use a slightly different internal design, but overall the sequence or process of diagnosis is pretty universal.
In this video, I'll focus on the Coyne Delaney version which is common to the area I service. The common complaints are, the flushometer won't flush, won't stop flushing, makes a loud banging noise, leaks, etc. I'll focus on why it won't flush and touch on some of the other problems you may be having.
Flushometer Won't Flush? These mysterious flushing devices are not difficult to repair and in this video, I'll show you my method and how you can make the repairs, and possibly save some serious cash!

Dude... 4 years later... This is still so helpful. I live in a 100 year old home in the north bronx (hi, neighbor!) and we have a tiny powder room with what we refer to as the "prison toilet" and first it did the constant flush... then it started doing the BANG. thanks to your videos, i know exactly what the problem is and i believe i can fix this. i do have a basic question, what's the best way to ensure i get that cover on super tight? also, is there a brand of diaphragm kit you recommend (NEVERMIND - i see the coyne kit in the description)... i believe i have a sloan 1.6 gpf. subscribing and keeping your page handy!

UPDATE: Um... how do you get a valve cap off if there is no bolt to unscrew. mine is a curved/rounded cap that has lots of gunk under it... is this cap glued on instead of screwed/bolted?

I use this wrench to remove the top of the flushometer.a.co/d/0fehgtA. Hold on to the body while removing the top and make sure the water supply is off.

Does the flush rate of the flush-o-meter match up with the flush rate of the bowl? Example : A 1.6 g.p.m. flush-o-meter will not supply enough water to flush a 3.5 g.p.m. bowl

I am guessing that a weak flush, factors into, a worn handle pushrod. Or secondarily, a mis-adjusted cap screw?

No mention of GPF on cover. How do I determine the actual flow capacity to replace diaphragm. Rex valve.

You should be able to take the existing diaphragm into a local plumbing supply house (not Lowes or H.D.) and they'll be able to match it base on the size of the hole in the metal rivet embedded in the diaphragm.

bob, are the diaphragms standard for the rex flush valve? i replace mine several years ago with one I bought in Home depot because it leaked; it was made of leather. i can't remember if i checked the depth of the trap seal after the refill when i bought it, but when i look at it now, the trap seal seems very shallow; like perhaps1/2 inch above where trap seal would be broken. i feel the seal should be deeper. would a new diaphragm, perhaps the correct one,.correct the depth of the trap seal?

I am probably using the wrong terminology but I hope this is a clearer explanation. I am calling the water in the trap seal. By trap seal I mean the depth of the water in the toilet bowl which is above the point in the bowl's trap where if the water in the bowl evaporated, sewer gas would escape. The depth of the water Mine is only about 1/2 inch above that point after the bowl refills; I think it should be deeper. Thanks Bob!

@@588158 In a toilet with a tank, the trap seal is replenished by a refill tube inside the toilet tank. A little different with a flushometer, but what you must make sure of is that the diaphragm you replaced matches the g.p.m. rating of the toilet bowl. Is it 3.5 g.p.m. (older versions) , 1.6 g.p.m. or 1.28 g.p.m. ? Whatever rating your bowl is, should match up with the diaphragm replacement. Assuming that's matched up, you could have a venting issue in your plumbing system which could affect the trap seal.

​@@BobsPlumbingVideosIt was here when I bought the house in 1989 so I think this is an older model so I'll try changing the diaphragm. Thank you for pointing out the venting issue!!! I do however hear a gurgle from the sink when the toilet is flushed. The half bath only has 2 fixtures, a toilet and a small sink with an 1 1/4 drain and the sink's drain connects to the soil stack below where the lead bend enters the stack. They are the only fixtures connected to the stack. Short of opening the wall, I'm not sure if it s wet vent. . The vent stack steps down in size when it reaches the attic and I am wondering if I might have a bird nest in there or a dead squirrel. I was going to drill a hole in the pipe in the attic and run a snake through to see if that was the problem. Thanks again bob!

I know this is two years old now, but just in case anyone else has this issue: being sweaty and cold indicates that the valve is not completely closing and water is continually flowing, causing the metal to cool down and water to condense on it from the air. You will usually hear the water running into the bowl too, as in this person's case.
