Hey, thanks for the video! For those of you interested in buying a fluval fx6, I just bought one. Here is my 1hr experience: SUPER easy to set up Extremely Quiet once running. Just the dull hum of a motor This video has three areas where it lacks full info: (1) When they put the canister under the tank and say turn it on, the valves where the in and out tubes go are in the horizontal position. They need to be in the VERTICAL position to work. (2) You unit might run for 30 seconds and then it will turn off all by itself...you will be confused...the unit is only try to get air out of the system and will resume running after a painful 2-3minutes, don't worry like I did. It may turn off and on a couple of times in order to evacuate all the air. (3) If you are going to do activated carbon, its easier to place in the unit before you go through the trouble of getting it all set up. I agree with people that this is expensive, but fluval has great customer service and many replaceable parts as well as a warranty so I expect this to run for a long time. Best of luck!

UPDATE: so i've been using it for 3 weeks now...I can't say anything bad about it. It is still so frickin quiet and the tank looks perfectly clear (110gallon). It comes with jet blowers on the output side so you get good water movement through the tank. I've moved them a couple of times to mix up deadzones/make it more interesting for the fish. Would recommend to something without a tight wallet. No experience with cheaper makes like Sunsun to give a fair comparison.

@fluval2 жыл бұрын
It's important to perform regular filter maintenance (media rinsing and replacement) to prevent media from compacting, which can result in air accumulation. Ensure the filter intake is not positioned near an airstone or any other source of air bubbles in the aquarium. Verify the integrity of the intake rubber hose connector that attaches to the intake siphon tube, as it does dry out over time and becomes hard and non-flexible, thus requiring periodic replacement. Also verify that the joint between the intake rubber hose connector and the intake siphon tube is positioned below the water surface. Lastly, ensure that all rubber gaskets and O-rings have been cleaned and lubricated with Fluval Silicone Lubricant (Item #A325), and that there are no kinks, loops, bends or turns in the hosing.

The best guide is to monitor your water quality and adjust the flow rate as needed. Also, take the size of the fish into consideration and make sre they can not get sucked into it and injured. :)

Can it be placed beside the tank instead of bottom?
@fluval Жыл бұрын
Hi there! Yes, FX Series canister filters can be placed beside the aquarium rather than directly below it, provided the distance between the top of the canister and the water level is more than 8" / 20 cm and less than 59" / 150 cm. For the best filtration performance, ensure the hosing follows as straight of a path as possible, with no kinks or loops.

Mine is setup a bit different than stock. I have biological media in all the trays. I use Seachem Matrix (a total of 3.5lbs) in the canister. The 1st tray also has 3 filters (course-Black, medium-blue and fine-white). The last tray has the thin Black filter at the bottom just in case to prevent any of the media from entering the pump and 2 Seachem Purigen packs. Additionally, I've recently installed a 90* PVC adaptor to replace the dual output nozzle for a more directed water flow. The filter is used on a 125g cichlid tank and I am quite happy with the filter, despite what the interweb has to say about it. The water enters the outside of the media baskets, then traverses the foam surround media upwards to the top and then downwards through the media baskets, at the bottom of the media basket stack is the chamber that leads to the pump intake. The pump then pumps upward through the included inner canister output tube.

It will be fine in a 120 gallon aquarium. There are two discharge nozzles which can be directed independently and you can reduce flow the output valve. In our experience with adult discus in aquariums that size or greater no flow reduction will be called for. Most plecos prefer strong water flow. The platys will be ok.

I would really like to know how to hook up the Fluval surface skimmer to this or even to the FX5. Thanks!
@fluval11 жыл бұрын
Hi Randy, the Fluval Surface Skimmer is great for keeping the surface free of organic film and for helping improve oxygen exchange. However, the surface skimmer inlets are not large enough to allow the required amount or flow of water into the FX6 because its motor is way too powerful. As a result, plenty of air would be inhaled with this device connected on the FX6, resulting in noise and other issues. The Surface Skimmer is meant to be used on the 04, 05 & 06 Series of Fluval canisters or filters.

+zac logan Hi zac, that would depend on the source of the cloudiness. New aquariums are often cloudy due to the decor and residual dust and debris that comes with that. Try fine filtration pads for a few days, and if it clears, then remove those pads and replace them. Having straight hosing does help with water flow, as does periodic maintenance of the hosing. Remember to remove the hoses a few times a year to give them a thorough rinsing.

Hi Stewart, the width pump sticks out approx. 3.25 inches, so allow for at least 3.5 inches here. Total width at the widest point is approx. 17.5 inches so allow for at least an extra inch here. We currently use FX 6's on discus only aquariums in that size range and they have no issues with excess current with the filters running a full flow (you can use the included output valve to reduce flow if desired). Do the ceramic media need to go into the mesh bags? I have a new setup (~3 days, 75 gallon tank home of 1 RES turtle) and I see slight white residue/film on the top of the water. Also I am having an issue with micro bubbles, as it seems to be getting air into the system. If I unplug/plug it works fine for about 45 minutes then starts bubbling.
@fluval9 жыл бұрын
+dallas lamb First course of action is to always make sure to rinse media well before use. Ceramic media do not have to be contained in mesh bags. It is normal for the filter to eject air; the foam filter media will usually have to discharge trapped air for up to a few days after a new installation or maintenance. Turtles do create more of a mess, and the foods they consume do tear apart while they eat resulting in more surface film.
@DRLAMB859 жыл бұрын
+FLUVAL Aquatics thanks! most of what I thought was film seem to be bubbles too so that part isn't too bad. it's only been 4 days and seems to be getting better so I will not worry and see how it goes in the next few days.

What size is the fx6 hosing?
@fluval5 жыл бұрын
The rubber hose connectors for the FX 5 measure 25.4 mm internal diameter and 32 mm outer diameter. The hosing itself is ribbed and is meant to be connected by those specific connectors. Do note that any external to the aquarium connections should be done only with the bonded rubber hose connector and not with the end where a connector has been twisted onto the ribbed hosing.

using canister for Marine tank, wont it have ammonia/nitrate spike?
@fluval8 жыл бұрын
A filter does not cause a nitrogen spike, nitrifying bacteria does. It originates from organic decomposition and the resulting conversion of that to a nitrogen compound or direct input of nitrogen compounds from foods and fish waste. Typically, some associate any added filter as a source of nitrate, however, this is inaccurate. Again, it is the result of biological input and not the inclusion of a motorized plastic unit filtering and moving water. Nitrate is an expected biological outcome controlled by a number of methods.

is the one ring that comes with it an extra one or where does it go?

Fluval, according to the FX6 specs, the wattage of this unit at 120v is 43w, however, I am measuring 80-84 watts (using load tester). What is going on? Is this an indication of a near future problem? Thanks...
@fluval6 жыл бұрын
We are somewhat confused by your comment, can you explain using a "load tester"? That is used for measuring CCA on batteries.
@Methodical26 жыл бұрын
I use the ammeter/wattmeter appliance load tester where you plug the device into the tester and plug the tester into the outlet and it provides the wattage and amperage used by the device while it’s running, in this case the filter.

We are looking into this, however, in the meantime please provide some details on the equipment you are using, exact name / brand / model # of device.

O-rings are incorporated both on the canister and the motor unit, and when servicing the filter, you should clean and lubricate with Fluval O-ring lubricant. Some exceptions do apply so please review and follow the instructions on maintenance and cleaning in your User's Manual, bit.ly/1bOcXzj If the O-ring is not clean and lubricated when re-installing your filter, depending on how you perform the task and also on the particular O-ring design, you could pinch the O-ring. Cleaning and lubrication help prevent the likelihood of this happening. Please note that O-rings are prone to wearing and may have to be replaced.

Huh, I just got a FX6, and it doesn't have that month dial. I'd actually use that if it was on mine. Wonder why it isn't?
@fluval5 жыл бұрын
There are two versions of the FX6 - the earlier one features the dials, while the most recent one has clips for the FX Gravel Vac!
@Silvers245 жыл бұрын
@@fluval I see, I personally would have preferred the previous version. Id get more use out of the "feature". I use to want a gravel vac, but due to circumstances and situations. I see no reason to personally own it now. (Still would be a valued addition if I did have it). But for the 300 stock tank I use for my turtle with bare floor. I use those "clips" for my power cord. As I had no idea otherwise what it was for. And failed to find the info in the documentation/internet (Didn't try hard enough to find the info ha.). Though, if I had the vac, it is a nice gesture for a place it can latch to :D.. Also to you guys. Thanks so much for your products, and for taking interest in us customers! @SugarFreeKool-aid.TheWorstKind6 жыл бұрын
When you add the food (flakes), do you have to unplug the filter??
@fluval6 жыл бұрын
When feeding it is a good idea to feed small amounts allowing fish to consume all the food before putting in the next portion, if fish are fed in small offers then there is no need to shut the filter down. When it comes to bottom feeders the fact that the food is on the bottom should suffice. in preventing it from entering the filter.

Hi thanks for the video, I am about to purchase the FX6 for an outdoor aquarium, I would like to have the glass bottom drilled so I can have the intake and out take hidden and coming through the floor instead of coming up over the back of the tank as its not very pleaseing to the eye. Can you tell me if this unit can work that way or will the pressure of all the water create an issue with the filer ?
@fluval4 жыл бұрын
The pressure is the same whether in either case, you would need to ensure how you have plumbed in that instance is secure. Also please visit fluvalaquatics.com to download the instruction manual which has maximum vertical hose placement specs for using this filter.

if i put this in my 160 l tank then how often i have to change the water...i have only 9 very small african cichlid inside not even a year old...
@fluval7 жыл бұрын
While a filter does help maintain better water quality the frequency of partial water changes should be approximately 20% bi monthly. While your African cichlids are young (what species are they?) the benefits of following a good regular partial water change schedule will benefit their growth rate. The FX 6 is likely unnecessary for 160L, a 306 or 406 would be the logical choice.

quick question... This is the first video I have seen by Fluval Aquatics.... I saw how you attached the hose to the top of the tank, but I have a plastic rim that goes all the way around.. i believe mine is an Aqueon 75 gallon... I already have a Trigger Systems 39 Sapphire hooked up to my aquarium. I want to add a canister filter and it looks like this is the industry standard.......BUT, is there another way to assemble for a tank with a lip around the top? Have you produced other videos about this product? Link? thanks for your help

If by lip you are referring to an inner glass brace you can always have two holes drilled through the brace to allow passing the hosing or fittings.

Hi, I would check to make sure you are not overloading the filter media baskets, that the media is fairly clean, and that the filter hosing is relatively straight with downward loops or bends. If your foam filtration is over a year old, replacing it can help as well. Is this a marine or freshwater aquarium?

I'm strongly considering getting an FX 6, but I am adamant i would like to continue using my brilliant BIOHOME media( which has unparalleled nitrite and nitrate removal ).Can I just ask, the way the FX6 is set up...?Does the flow through the media canisters go from the BOTTOM to the TOP before being sent back to the aquarium or is it TOP down to BOTTOM? Reason I ask is that to work 100% effectively, BIOHOME needs mechanical filtration ( waste particles etc ) before the water hits it ( the water should be particle free ).Many thanks for the help
@fluval8 жыл бұрын
+Mark Pilgrim Hi Mark, the flow travels from the top to the bottom. The pump inlet is at the bottom of the media baskets.
