Flux For BGA Reballing Rework

Hello, this is a short video about the fluxes that i use for BGA repairs Reballing - Rework.
i have used KINGBO RMA-218, AMTECH NC-559 and 4300LF/TF, SRA TF5000, WARTON METALS rework flux, liquid rosin and paste flux,
The flux that i use many years for all my BGA repairs is Warton Metals Future HF Rework Jelly, it does a very good job and leaves almost no residue.
It is best to use fluxes that do not contain any harmful materials

The original (!) Amtech beats all the other fluxes which I had tested. It has a unique smell and texture. That's how you can tell. It does not burn and leaves no brown residue. The cheap knock-offs from China are ok-ish for easy stuff or desoldering. Yet, they burn up quite early. The Riesba I found to be terrible. Lots of dirt, bad solder flow. ChipQuick also has good fluxes, but for reballing it is a little too liquid. The balls tend to hop out of the masking holes and smear the flux all over the other balls.

So basically the fluxes that you have tried will contain a low boiling point solvent and that is the main cause of brown residue. The SolderKing version leaves clear, clean resides. Oh, we developed the Warton Metals product in this video nearly 15 years ago 😂

Do you know the content of flux used for BGA? In fact, if we know the contents, we can do it ourselves. Resin, glycerin and isopropyl alcohol are present in resinous fluxes for general use. But I do not know what is in the content of BGA flux.

Hello, for reflowing i use this liquid rosin flux you see in the video, in my opinion it is the best, you can find it here: www.ebay.de/itm/232364626422?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649 all the fluxes in this video are no clean. it means they are not corrosive and not conductive and you can leave the residue on the pcb.

A quick question about the Warton Metals Rework Jelly. The datasheet says it has a melting point of 50-56c but in the video you say the flux should have a an activation point of ~150c. It doesn't say anything about an 'activation point'. Is the 'melting point' the 'activation point'? Just wondering as I'm about to buy some of the warton metals flux. Thanks

Hello, the melting point is the temperature that the flux paste turns in to liquid, the flux activation point is the temperature that the flux activates and prevents oxides from forming during the soldering process and also removes oxidation from the parts you want to solder.

Nik Telio ahh thank you for clearing that up for me. I’m pretty new to all of this and couldn’t find a reference to the activation point in the spec sheet. I’ve purchased some of the Wharton metals flux now. Thanks for your help.

Hello. Is the bga reballing flux is hard to clean? I use that kingbo for smd solder. Seems like it easy to evaporate n hard to clean it

cheap fluxes leave a lot of residue and is sometimes hard to clean, the warton metals flux that i usually use does not leave much residue and is easy to clean. Try to clean the residue while the board is still warm, it is easier

Many AMTECH NC-559-ASM is fake. NC-559-V2-TF is real. I found good results for rework with it. Might try another fluxes though.

Hello, i do not prefer universal fluxes because the are made for soldering using a soldering iron and this means 300c+ temps, which means the have a high activation point, the temperatures needed for reballing are 250c max and we need a low activation point about 150c. That said , it does not mean that it will not do the job, but these fluxes are just not made for this kind of bga repairs.

To aliign and reballing which flux is good, for lifting the chip amtech fake or original works. But when we put solder balls on the chip when heating with hot air, it never works properly. Any other flux which is available in aliexpress,can u plz suggest

do not use fake flux for bga rework repairs, amtech 559 is a good flux, i use the warton metals rework jelly. do you use direct heat stencils for reballing

@@KiranKumarblogspot then you have to use tacky fluxes to avoid ball migration when heating with hot air, i always use direct heat stencils as you see in my videos because i think ball migration would probably be an issue every time i try to reball.

Hello, i never used QSI flux, you can use many fluxes for reballing but cleaning the flux after the repair is sometimes difficult, that's why i use the Warton metals flux , is a little expensive but cleaning is very easy

Did you find out if that Amtech flux is genuine??? And you didn't say how good that SRA TF-5000 is. And have you tried Kester 951 and 186 flux??

i bought the nc-559 $8 (ebay)and i'm sure it is fake but for general use it is really good, the 4300TF $26(ebay) it is suppose to be a good flux for reballing, every seller claims that they sell genuine flux even those from China, unless you buy fluxes from authorized sellers listed on amtech site, i think the rest is fake. i did not test the SRA ($23 ebay) much because i was using the warton metals flux on all my reballings and it expired siting on the shelf :-/ , the thing is that i use direct heat stencils for reballing and it does not meter to me if some flux is the best in the world, if it is bubbling to much then all the balls will fly away from the stencil :D so it is not good for me , if i reballed using a reballing station then i could use a bigger variety of fluxes. No i did not use Kester flux

i would say the Amtech 559 is a very good flux, buy it from a trusted seller because there are many fakes out there.

Hi, i get the rosin liquid flux from this seller but unfortunately he no longer ships outside of the UK. I think he wanted to ask how you built the frame that supports the board. The clamps look like general purpose clamps you would buy at the hardware store...
