Excellent tips for new to dry fly fishing as I am. Liked it of course & will follow the advice tomorrow. One question, I have been casting my tippet @ 6lb Wychwood Ghost on a one metre length from a 3 metre tapered leader dropping to one third of that as I do seem to miss some takes on a longer tippet. Is this something that you would look at or do you prefer the longer tippet length. Regards, Derick.

Hello Derrick. Firstly, thank you for watching! I generally use as short a leader as conditions allow. If the fish are taking flies readily it pays to fish a short leader to allow you to target fish that may be close to you and also get good turnover. I generally fish 1 pattern. I use a cut down tapered leader, cut to 6ft and the attach 3ft of 5 or 6lb flouro. If fish are spooky i extend the floor to 6ft. Remember., when trout take a fly on the surface their window of vision can be as little as 3 to 6 inches. 👍

Hi Philip, firstly, thank you for watching. I was fishing a single emerger. The surface was quite calm and I wanted to present the fly as stealthily as possible. I do often fish 2 flies, especially if i am unsure if the trout are taking in the film or of the surface. In which case I fish maybe a top hat with an F Fly or shipmans on the dropper.

We enjoyed that (and part 1) and learned so much. We have fished that exact peg at Chatton so that was even better. If the fish are "fussy" would you go down a size? I struggle tying on 18's. Any tips? Perhaps tying them on at home?

Thank you for watching Paul. I really appreciate that. To be honest, every day on the dry can be totally different. When they are fussy I generally first work on the presentation. Leader diameter can cause refusals as well as fly choice (colour and size). I generally look for clues on watch is hatching and what the trout are taking, then make my choice on fly size. Anything between a size 12 or 20. Buy some clip on magnifying glasses for your cap.. Priceless for tying small fly to fine tippet.

Hi Paul, thank you for watching. Fishing Shipmans, is surprisingly simple. However, they are most effective when Fish are feeding on the shucks of hatched midge. A tell tale sign is when a trout is rising multiple times in a small path leasuirely "sipping" from the surface film. Degreaser your leader from the fly 3 to 5 back, add a little floatant to the shipmans (top only not the underside). Cast in the path of rising fish wait a take for around 30 seconds and recast 👍

I was out on Sunday on my local still water, o haven't been flyfishing in a while and and I ended up missing 11 fish and landing 0 ☹️. Would I maybe be striking to early?

Hi Will, firstly, thank you for watching. Obviously, missing so many takes means something was wrong. Normally a slight pause after watching the fish take the fly and a gentle "lift" will set the hook. If you are striking too hard, you may actually be pulling the hook from the Trout's mouth. Also, if your rod action is to stiff this can cause problems. Next trip, try a short pause before lifting in, check your hooks and make sure the patterns dressing is not obscuring the gape of the hook in any way. Tight lines 👍

I'm pretty sure my timing is what's causing the problem so I'll leave that little pause and see how I go on Thursday when I'm off work. Thanks again and tight lines.

Why don't you put the floatant on your hand and then get the hook by the bend and rub the top hat into the floatant
