Great work out there man! Your guide seemed like he really knew his stuff! And don't sweat the commenter, he means well but doesn't really know what he's talking about here.. The "backwards flow is bad" thing is a common misconception among people who don't realize that fish will naturally swim downstream at some (if not many) points in their life.

When you release a trout, please always face them upstream and let the water run over their gills naturally. When you hold a trout across a current or downstream especially, it causes severe strain on their gills and can hurt the fish pretty badly. I've caught a lot of fish in Eleven Mile and the Deckers section of the S'Platte where fish have been hurt because of that. Thanks man and tight lines!
