If you are used to fishing smaller Stillwater venues, then a taking on a large expanse of water such as Rutland can be very daunting. In this video I am joined by Ronnie Christie, this is the man that took me under his wing and taught me how to Fly Fish. He has a wealth of Fly Fishing experience and a methodical way of working through the often complex problem of catching trout!
This is part of a series of videos that concentrates on the larger venues and how best to approach them. If you are new to fishing from a boat I hope they will add some value and maybe even give you the confidence to give it a go.
As always your feedback is very much appreciated and if you have any tips to help folks approaching these large venues, please leave them in the comments section below.

I am a river fisher that has come over to Stillwater late in life. There is so much to learn especially with depth. I don’t want to strip lures. I want to use flies as close as possible to what the fish are feeding on. Your videos are excellent and great learning tools, thank you

Lindsay, another first class video. Content and editing were spot on as usual but I laughed when you covered communication, sadly depending on the comp and the boat draw not all boat partners are as keen to share as Ronnie (who’s a natural in front of the camera by the way) ... Many fish venues like this from the bank and do very well. The problem I have is living so far away it makes going at minimum an all day affair. Having a boat means you can get around a lot easier.

My advice would be never wear waders in a boat! Frightening the amount of people I see doing this. And after a horrible experience out on loch leven once after the fuel line burst!!! Check the boat before heading out, hose lines between outboard and fuel tank are prone to deterioration and check connections. Never go fishing when your supposed to be shopping with the other half!!! Lol.
