Am looking to get back into fly fishing after many years and trying to see what significant changes if any . Glad I came across this very informative video on fishing a river on my bucket list , thank you. Dont quite understand people who feel they know it all and are quick to criticise , I wonder how many videos they have made !

Am frankly stunned by the negative comments below , these are guys are some of the top competition fly anglers in England. People are saying get the fish back quickly etc. They are making a video people watching want to see the fish caught. i have had grayling go "belly up" ie float upside down, but leave them in the net to reoriente after 10 min they make a full recovery. Am not for one minute suggesting that the fish caught should be out the water that long but given what i saw on the video you could still easily have the fish out for longer with no harm what so ever. Very good Video well done.

Really nice video but for me you have an England International and you never heard from him. Would of been better to see and hear more from him throughout. However still an absolutely fantastic video that's really on my doorstep!!! How lucky am I!!! Spent my early years and teenage years catching grayling where I grew up in Derby on the Derwent.

After explaining fish care - don't touch them with dry hands, etc - you chuck it back from a height. Put them in the net and lower them in if you can't reach the water.

A head river keeper on a renowned fishery told me - Grayling are not bulletproof, like trout - they are often somewhat traumatised by being caught, and if they're lowered into the water they often belly-up. Tossing them in wakes them up, and they recover immediately. Since adopting that return method I've never had to chase a bellied-uo grayling downstream, trying to net it.

I've got to agree with the previous comment. "That's the sacrifice you make when you fish 2lb tippet". I'd also really like to know what evidence there is in the difference of performance/catch rate if the presenter used 3 or 4lb tippet too. It is clear the two anglers are skilled practitioners but they still mention they lost fish so what message does this give to us mortals especially when we want to try to catch bigger fish in low, summer flows? I can't believe it will be easy to bring in sizeable fish in these conditions with warmer water temps and thin diameter tippet. I wonder what damage this could be doing? I have to say this won't be for me as I want the fish to have a fighting chance. It is after all fishing we do and not catching.
@techsecmedia
@techsecmedia 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Simon thanks for your question. Its a bit of a catch 22 issues. You need to step down the tipped diameter to get the fish to take but you do run the risk of being snapped off. If you don't get the fish to take in the first place you certainly won't get the fish in the net. When fishing light you may get snapped off from time to time but you will get more takes. I guess its numbers game.

@@techsecmedia Many thanks for your reply. I'm not so sure I'd really want to risk breaking off on fish at my skill level at least. It isn't a numbers game for me or judging by other comments others either. You just have to see that mainstream fishing is getting a great boost from Whitehouse and Mortimers program that isn't just about catching fish and making things over technical for the sake of it. I won't be entering the draw and would suggest Lewis watches the video after comments about fish handling and breaking off along with using a net that is appropriate for the job. It may ensure he practices what he preaches.

@@simonjones3663 Hi Simon, Your right, its not all about catching fish and maybe I didn't give you a very good reply, I'm really not looking for a fight. I'm sure Lewis will reply when he can but he is very busy at the moment. Lewis doesn't loose a lot of fish using light tippets as he fishes light weight gear. Like wise Ive lost good fish on much heavier tippet through bad angling, especially when I started fishing. I also agree beginners might like to step up their tippet diameter if that helps their confidence. Its a real shame that you don't won't to enter, as you might of been able to get better answers from Lewis in person rather than me waffling on. Anyway Tight lines and take care.
@jimredfern8645

@@simonjones3663 that applies to any angling of any kind. Winter fishing or anytime of year where fish are finicky you constantly have to step down in hook size or line diameter. I've had chub, grayling, carp, bream and other fish in circumstances where I've scaled down. The point for me is experience of playing a fish on lighter tackle but you only get that if you put it into practice and we've all lost fish doing it.

Nice vid thanks. Shame about the decent brownie. Did I hear correctly you are using 2lb line? You said that you didn't know what you'd might catch - and that there might be 4lb ladies in the river - (I hear what you say about need to use light line but.....) is such a light line, that might get smashed, really good for the welfare of the fish?

I gave up on this video. Ads, ads, ads. It's monetisation to the point of greed. If the idea of the film is to promote the fishing sales, peppering it with random ads that do nothing but irritate the viewer, does not help the cause. Ad frequency can be adjusted by the channel owner. Fly fishing is becoming increasingly vulgar - like carp fishing.
@techsecmedia

@3000waterman

@alanrtment porter Not entirely accurate. The video publisher has considerable say in how many ads. I think one to start and one to finish is fair. Breaking into a film is irritating in the extreme. This film there are LOTS of breaks. Someone is being greedy. So not subscribed.
