I also really appreciate this video. I tried fly fishing when I was younger and sorta gave up on it. Probably because I was obviously not doing anything correctly LOL. OF course that was before youtube! I did catch some fish, but only in places where you could tie a sock on a hook and catch them. With the Pandemic I have spent tons of time boning up on the fishing this year. Caught the most trout, bass, and perch of my life. My daughter , who just started fishing this year has become an awesome angler . Caught a small mouth bass off the docks in town (big fish). Next up, fly fishing thanks to your video! Thank you, and I agree with others you teach well!

I had a lesson with Richard at blakewell in August this year 2019 whilst on my summer holiday, a really nice guy and well worth the money, a beautiful place to fish, it also has a great cafe and lovely staff. I have already done course and sea fishing and now I can’t wait to get some fly gear and get out there. So if you’re in north Devon and fancy a go get down there you won’t regret it.👍

Simon, you cast like magic. I now have an aspirational target: to shoot for the ability to roll cast for adding several feet of distance. I think it would be fabulous to see a video of you working a wild lake. That fishery pond made me think of the difference between walking a golf course and backpacking in wilderness.

If you tie a heavier leader into your fly line with a nail knot (,cut the loop off) and use heavier line say 15 pounds for say 4 feet minimum and at the end going to the fly leave a loop then use your light fly line 6 pound or so for 14 feet or whatever and connect it using a loop to loop connection, saves a lot of fuss when putting a new leader on. My leader is 18 feet with droppers 4 feet apart.

That was great the fish looked fantastic colors and in really good condition the lake and surrounding was beuitiful in itself talking to the fisheries manger there I could tell he really knows his profession his spot on ....I like catch and release but never keep a trout out of the water for longer than 17 seconds if I can to stop any harm or corrosion to the Gill I've got to say your video was excellent finally I feel like I understand where I'm going wrong with my cast ...I couldn't belive the distance you were able to get. ..plus the ideas that you came up with in knowing what the fish should or would accept is an elumination to me as I fish one line one or two favorite fly ... well I've learnt something today thank you for your help and advice and time with this what a great video !!! And I always remember that the trout is only aluve because of the fishery and are preditory but I never want to harm or hurt any living creature so it's great to see catch and release fishery the fish will grow and can live many years in an environment that is plentiful and studies show that fish recover from trauma very quickly in fact within a moment and can take the very next cast you put out ... so I feel very greatful to good fishery such as this one that allow catch and release. ...

Funny story I was carrying a bamboo fly rod and was afraid it would get broken . SO I wrote a note and leaned it against the wee bait shop and walked on . A second thought on this video is that to load the road in the backcast to the max don't come back past one o'clock. The more vertical the rod is on the backcast the more power you can generate in the forward cast. Also, learn how to haul and double haul if you want distance.

Leader: Is he using a 3X tapered leader or 3X fluorocarbon un-tapered? From looking at the spool it does not looked tapered. If it's just 3X through and through his leader looks like it's casting well. That makes things a lot easier than trying to attach 6 to 7 lengths of leader/tippet line. I build my own leaders. Not big fan of prefabbed tapered leaders. By time change a few flies it's not all that tapered any more and I'm attaching more line anyway trying to figure out where on the taper the line's diameter sits at when I need to add more length to the leader/tippet.

I only use 3 pieces for my personal leaders... I also keep my leaders on the flies and change both leader and fly at the same time. Seems nuts I know, but I like to alternate styles of flies I'm fishing with... and I'm not constantly cutting flies off and then changing my leader, just because I want to switch from a surface popper to bead headed nymph or wooly bugger.

Maybe just takes a bit more practice to get it rolling. :) But definitely some lines are better and easier to cast than others. One thing that could help is to film your own cast from the side, and see if you stop the rod in right moments and so forth :)

Make sure the line weight is the same as the rod. Both 8 or whatever your rod is. And you need to get the length of line right to load the rod before it really shoots the line out. Too little and it won't bend the rod enough. And let go of the line on the final cast just as you feel it pull at your fingers. Too early it'll just fall down and too late it won't go far enough.
