Some times all you can do is fish the waters you've been given - I have to work hard for 7" trout in a very short window of weather (water turns rock hard here for about 5 months of the year)... but I'm happy with the native brookies ( been to NZ once - if I get the chance I'll be back) - Thanks for the videos / nice work!

It’s crazy how similar this place is to Idaho. Sage, pines, yellow grass, pristine rivers, snow capped mountains in the background... I’m literally on the opposite side of the planet but this looks like my own backyard. Our fish aren’t usually quite this big though, lol. 😂 love the video!

@@waltershumate5777 Yeah we definitely have fish that are "as big" as these but they are NOT normal! These dudes were pulling out huge lunker's all day. Looks like a lot of fun. I'd love to catch a steelhead some day but I haven't yet had the opportunity!

@@bushpilot223 you might try checking with the Quinault Indian reservation on the Pacific coast of Washington. They do guided catch-and-release but because they're their own Nation you don't have to pay an out of state fishing license fee. You just buy your license through the Quinault and fish their River. A pharmacist in my area has a picture of his son-in-law with a 35lb Steely on the Quinault River..! Ahn eet eez mahzive mahn!

@jmy... I worked in michicot W.I Fished everyday with the Man that does the fishing report for Lake MIchigan. I CAUGHT 10 TO 15 lbs trolling Rainbows and Browns I ALSO SPENT 2 MONTHS 3 TIMES IN north and south Island Cjristchurch N.Z. U.S.NAVY DUTY the trout I caught varied between 5 lbs and 26 lbs largest sea run Rainbow I caught. I want to go back soon BEST FISHING ON THE PLANET

Those fish are big but they are not pretty and the scenery is bland. I'd much rather be catching 1-5lb quality wild fish up in the mountains than these ugly pellet fed farm fish

It's like fishing in a barrel. Spawning fish, full of roe and eggs milling around in front of you in the right spot. I'm sure a bit of jagging goes on.(I saw it last year). It is also a testament to the stocks of fish in the Twizel area...the river being fished is only one part of the whole system. One thing for sure, catch one of these big rainbows in Febuary night fishing on a lumo fly and there are major runs, smashing jumps in the darkness and a full on fight by a fish in its prime. It's very good of Fish and Game to open the Ohau River in September to give the GP (general public) the chance to fish for these beasts even if they are spawning. I'm jealous...

For anyone wondering, these fish are CANAL fish. They feed on salmon farm pellets in the man made hydro canals in Twizel, then some of them manage to go through the Dam walls and into the lake where these fish can now enter Rivers that flow into the lake to spawn.

In the other rivers which mainly consist of browns, they are naturally fed and can still reach up to that size. In mouse season which is now I know somebody who caught a 15 Ib brown. And the canal fish I also heard don't really eat too many pellets but there are also these huge snails that they eat as well, and of course the bugs and invertebrates.

Ok guys this is by far my most favorite fishing vid ever !! just one question is this the south island or the north ? . I was In New Zealand back in 1982 to 1984 for Operation deep freeze , Christ Church was the city I must say it was one of the best times of my life , wish I would have fished more then I did . The people there are some of the best and friendly people I have ever had the pleasure to have known . I think I am going to re visit next year after all the covid stuff is over , finally retired and have been telling myself I am going back to spend a month and really see the south island . I know very little of the north island but would love to see it also . please let me know if you might be able to give me some tips on where to go and other info that would help . I have a friend there and im sure she and her husband will also help me . Love your channel , I just subscribed and am excite to see more vids . thank you guys for this eye candy . Bill J
