Fly Fishing for Wild Brown Trout - Back on the River

I got my waders back from being repaired, new boots and a new toy so the day my waders arrived I was straight back the River Exe after the wild brown trout on the dry fly. It was a tough one though, I just couldn't seem to match the hatch and I've never changed fly so often!
Loved every minute of it as always and I've learned that yet again, my videography needs improvement!

Haha. I didn’t know that. After editing hours of footage I add the logo and as I’ve watched it so many times I can’t watch it through again! I’ll keep that in mind now though. Thanks for watching

New boots and panties, eh? Great to see you back on the main river, Paul. Interesting that Dave can put new neoprene socks on waders. I have the same Scierras as you, but the socks are too narrow (I have flippers for feet - good for swimming), despite being a bit too long. I'll get him to put some on mine. I bought a set of Vision waist waders from him last season, which are the most comfortable waders I've ever worn.

It’s well worth it. My socks were pretty much worn out but were always too small. They were hard work putting on and taking off. Now I can do it without puffing and panting! Thanks for watching

Enjoying your videos. I like the way you keep things simple. I am new to fly fishing and having moderate luck on small lakes here in sussex. Going to fish the river lyne in cumbria in september hope to have better luck up there. Keep up the good work. :)

Thanks James. I’ve only fished lakes a few times and if you are having moderate luck on those then you’ll do fine on the rivers. The river is far more forgiving of a bad cast! Be warned, once you’ve fly fished on a river it’s very addictive, people have been known to move house to be near a river! Good luck and thanks for your comment

Hi mate can I male a suggestion. I fish loads of chalk stream and I tend to let the fly travel past me and do a roll cast again. Always a ensure to see you fish. Mayfly sparse at present

hi Paul, nice to see you back on the Exe, same problem with flies here in mid Wales with only three on the water and yet fish rising but not for those , seen yellow sally mayflies and LDO just go floating by and fish uninterested so like you just trying anything. Like the video with tripod and drone footage, well done. Mike

Thanks Mike. I’m convincing myself that it was mainly a Grayling shoal that was rising but in my head I know there were more brownies that just knew what they wanted, and it wasn’t what I was offering! Thanks for watching

Hi Paul, I watch your videos alot, I do notice the little flick you do when you're going to recast. If you slowly pull you're line toward you the pluck it off the water as you're going to cast, you might find your catch rate improves. That little splashy disturbance of your fly line and fly whipping out of the water would be enough to put fish down therefore less fish. I know it's not a numbers game but just something to think about. Take care and tight lines.
