Fly Fishing in the Anthropocene | Documentary 2017

The Ozernaya River winds serpentine-like through a remote corner of Kamchatka in Far East Russia. In one of the most intact eco-systems left in the Northern Pacific, rainbow trout eat mice for breakfast, and the salmon run in the hundred of thousands. This bounty attracts two kinds of people; those who want to protect, and those who want to exploit. Rampant salmon poaching is big business on Kamchatka, and once the salmon are gone, entire eco-systems collapse. "Fly Fishing in the Anthropocene" explores how fly fishing can help protect the wilderness, and celebrates the beauty and wonder of one of the most vibrant places on earth.

Thank you for a very difficult job that has become a great documentary! He was engaged in the protection of fish in Russia, the number of poachers over the past 10 years has decreased hundreds of times. Now there are very large fines and criminal liability. More films like this at the very least should be a starting point for raising awareness about the ecological, recreational and cultural value of the Camchucka river. My daughter is 7 too and i found it hard to watch your outlook on what her future holds for her. Thank you for sharing, however hard it was to watch...

My name is Nemanja (girlfriends KZbin account in case anyone gets confused) Rolf your film is spectacular, educational, touching, eye opening. Thank you all for it. I watched a video of this guy a few years back..fishing there with his friends, unhooking one fish to realise that another had swallowed his fly whilst he's checking the one in the net - straight after I sent the link to my dad and said, one day, we'll fish that river. - Once he had seen the video he said, son, we fished like this on the Prača Canyon in the 80's and yet in less then 40 years now that same canyon is about to be sank by a dam as many other rivers are or have been in Bosnia (Ex Yugoslavia) Not even sure why I'm saying all this but I guess I have found your film has a familiar note that resonates with things I've heard before from my dad and times I'd wished to have witnessed.. it's great people are being made aware of the issues ahead in a creative way as portrayed here. But the lack of respect or simply ignorance majority of mankind shows towards our natural resources in the form that they are in is proving devastating. There is nothing harder then feeling outnumbered in a fight to preserve the nature as it is, which is clearly captured in the faces and voices of the characters in this documentary. That same feeling leads me to an old saying "live simply, so that others can simply live" m.t. and holds true, if only more people would realise it. Apologies for my rambles and once again thanks for the great cinematography & story telling.

I shudder to think of what is happening in and around these rivers while so much financial pressure is on Russia with the war. I can imagine that destructive money making operations are at an all time high with hardly anyone available to help preserve the environment at a time like this in Russia. Thank you for bringing awareness to this issue Rolf, and we can only hope that things will change in the future.

More than promoting a fishing camp, this beautiful film promotes preservation of wilderness against human eco-folly and greed in 20 minutes of lush scenery and haunting interviews of fishing guests, camp operators, and guides. Spellbinding. Kamchatka and New Zealand are two places on this little blue globe floating in space that I've yet had the privilege of fly fishing.

This film moved me to tears. It is heartbreaking to see the destruction of such wonder by human greed. I have fly-fished all my adult life, taught my sons, and hope to shortly teach my grandchildren: but what will they inherit? Every fly fisher MUST become a radical conservationist: we must fight for every river, every stream, every ditch. It is hard, but we can - we must - win. I love this film...i love kamchatka and its nature ...i will keep going back there until i die...i love to walk in the florests there, to apreciate its wonderful nature and to fly fish... i am a brazilian and i love to go to our amazon as to go to kamchatka....incredible places...without very many human beings...hope its stay like that...humans are not good at all....we face the same problems in Brazil... where we fly fish for huge peacock bass,,,,humans atre destroying it slowly...

Great film and great reminder of what happens if we are not conscious enough to keep things untouched to good extent for the sake of sustainability best demonstrated by the local keen community who live as part of that eco system. Not to mention, we live in cities that is systematically exploiting local water system. We drain our waste into our local water system, pretend we are not part of destructive machine we call CITY, we pay tax to hire someone else to take care of that mess so we have time to go fishing, but then complain that we don't see good fish here and there.

Great camera work and great story. Fishermen with good intentions are one of the advocates and guards of the nature. There will never be enough water/fishing police to guard rivers, lakes from the idiots. It's all about the education, so get your children out in the nature and teach them the attitude. It's not a year's run. It's decades, centuries.

Emotional and moving piece of film. Anyone who is involved in Fresh water fishing, should take a look at this. The end of the road, has already arrived and we have been in that place for sometime. This film reconfirms this, we must do everything we can to reverse the destruction and protect the wilderness. Not for us, as it's us, that must amend, it's this generation responsible for the collapse. It is only the end if we are not active. However if we unite, with unity, we can make a change.

It'll be just another notch in the belt if we can't find ways to protect waters like this. As is inevitable with any unprotected lands and water, it will be raped and destroyed of it's riches by humans. People never think for the future and the damage that even just a little bit of alteration, land developing, poaching, or hunting can do. It can be such a small thing that destroys the balance that makes this river so amazing for fishing, and nobody every considers the consequences on the future generations or even the current one. Places like this deserve to be protected and preserved. The beauty and bounty that this river provides speaks for itself, and without proper care and restrictions it would be decimated within 100 years. This video was excellent, and I really hope this group can keep driving poachers away and keep this cut of beauty alive, for the future generations of fisherman and wilderness explorers.

Many beautiful and amazing rivers have been ruined by dams and hydropower here in finland.. it's sad to watch old pictures of huge brown trouts and salmons and looking the same rivers now,Only stocked fish
