Opening day Scott G Series rod test.
We put the new C Series 8'8" 5wt fly rod to the test on a couple of nice browns on a river swollen by overnight rain. The rod came up trumps with it's ease of use and lovely mid action winning us over. The rod mends like a dream to complement the deep loading blank. Lovely stick.

Just seeing the size of the browns you catch is awesome. I picked up a Scott A4 rod after redeploying in 2013 and somehow never fished with it until this season. What a loss that was. I absolutely love it and use it as a all-around rod. Love the way it casts and send the line out like magic - each time I say to myself, "how did I just do that?" My dream is to fly fish NZ. Great videos Mike! I especially can applaud the way you guide from a distance, letting the caster do most on his own and only offering help if needed or wanted. Some of the downstream antics make me laugh as I have had to run after fish myself. Truly keep up the great work you do and showing us the splendors of NZ. Such water quality and scenery that catching fish is a bonus round.

I doubt that Scott would put out a new rod that was anything less than superb. I can only imagine how well such a rod would roll/spey cast.

Nicely done Mike, the Adidas three-stripes are another story, but I understand nelson is a bit behind the rest of NZ so understandable... Must try that rod. Most envious of your gentle striking technique... me?... every trout is a MARLIN!

troutboynz Cheers Andrew, the 'retro' trackies are the result of hut clothing left on as we nipped out with the rod before brekkie for a look - only a half hour later we were back in the hut choking down food before a big day... Great rod the G Series although not so sure it would be your first choice given your almost anal proclivity towards 'fast as hell' rods! 😜 The striking thing is the result of me fishing with instinct more than watching indicators these days. That was fishing with only a single nymph and watching for some visual clue of a take. If that fails, time it so you gently lift in as you think it's in the strike zone... nice to come up tight!

Nice clip Mike and some great opening fish. My Dad has one of the earlier G Series and it's a dream to cast, I can only imagine what the latest version is like.Cheers Chris.

nice video, thats quite a trip for testing a new rod too! :) I got a G-series 8'8 #5 myself. Beautiful and such a smooth rod to both cast and fight fish on. I'm curious of what line you are using on it? I'm using SA amplitude art smooth, and thats the best setup I've ever fished with. Totally in love with this rod.
@mikefsher
@mikefsher 4 жыл бұрын
madzern cheers. I have a couple of lines I like on it but simply put, I think you want a presentation style long front taper to keep the rod feeling smooth. The new Airflow Superflow lines are great on it.

@@mikefsher nice mate. I think I'll just keep going with the amplitude line, its a great fly line and the ART taper can take the most situations it seems. but you never know, I might end up with a new line sometime haha. doesn't look like any shops here in Norway got those Airflow lines anyway. tight lines

Hey Mike, big fan of yours mate. Just wondering if you could give me your 2 cents on this rod in 906, versus the Radian in the same configuration for North Island areas. Cheers, Dan.
@mikefsher
@mikefsher 6 жыл бұрын
Claire Abbot they are two completely different rods that are designed for different purposes. The G series is a wonderful presentation rod, while the Radian is more an exquisite all rounder that is fast and light. Ask what you need your rod to do and you'll have your answer.

Maybe you've tried several lengths in the previous G2, there is significant difference of characteristics of action within a line weight.

If u must choose Radian or G Series, which one would u take?
@mikefsher
@mikefsher 5 жыл бұрын
Zeko Kasu what I would choose is not really relevant. What do YOU want in a rod? The Radian is a great all round fast action rod and the G Series is a lovely slower action mid-flex rod - what do you like? My advice would be try them out before you buy if possible.
@vreth22

I was casting G Series 905 at store, and i really liled it, it was so smooth, i had a smile while i was casting it. I was 100% sure that this is the rod i will buy. Then the owner of the shoop said sure its a great rod but, if there is just little wind, the rpd is hard to cast with, and he said that better choice is Winston Pure. I had Radian before, and it was really good too. Now i want a softer midflex rod. So hard, i really enjoyed Scott G Serieas but got spooked by flyshop owner...hajaj Great video btw and ty for help.
@mikefsher
@mikefsher 5 жыл бұрын
Zeko Kasu I know what you mean about smiling when you cast a G Series! Casting in wind is more about technique than rod so buy what you like the most and learn to use it well
@adamchristo3082
@adamchristo3082 5 жыл бұрын
@@mikefsher atm, I use an 5# SAGE TCR up lined to 6# for my powerful type cast and use with nymphs and windy conditions. However, I'd like to get a true #5 for close accuracy and presentation of dry flys and light to medium weight nymphs. now considering my stronger casting preference, would you think the RADIAN or G would be the go?
@mikefsher
@mikefsher 5 жыл бұрын
Adam Christo I’m always against overlining rods as they are designed with a set line in mind. Carrying more line mass in the air with a lesser rated rod just doesn’t work well, why not buy a 6wt rod?... Anyway, definitely go the Radian as it is a great stick and loads well for short casts with ease.

Take my advise, NEVER touch the rod blank, while you drilling the fish ! You can break the rod with that..
@mikefsher
@mikefsher 6 жыл бұрын
If i thought you knew what you were talking about i'd heed your advice - but i'll keep using sound technique that hasn't broken a rod on large fish for 37 years. Soooo no thanks, good try though...
