6:50 I caught a nice brown at that exact spot on a dry dropper yesterday. I seen a few comments about jerk stripping. In my experience it creates too much slack after the jerk and if you do get hit you have try make up that slack in your hook set, and miss a lot of fish.
@stevemd89472 күн бұрын
Jerk stripping, if done correctly, does not create slack line.
@FlyFishFood2 күн бұрын
@@stevemd8947 that’s kind of the idea behind a jerk strip is to use the rod to impart action. If your rod is even a little bit to the side you will have to trout set. It’s a side sweeping trout set, but a trout set nonetheless.

Thanks Lance for this fairly extensive skill builder. A question about your gear: is the backpack you are wearing the same one I see on your link to your website? The Zs2 Overlook 500 kit? Or is it a different backpack? Thanks again!

Really enjoyed seeing Lance work whole sections of river with the streamer rig. Lots of tips to work with. Great format to give a keen mug a ton of things to think about. Thanks for putting it together. Cheers from downunder. PP

Is the rod/gear in the description what you used (reel, line, etc)? What pack is that?
@Lanceeganflyfishing2 күн бұрын
Rod is a sage payload 689-4. Reel is a Lamson speedster. Line is SA sonar Titan sink tip type 6. Pack is an older umpqua overlook.

Lance great stuff! So what are those gloves? In the Winter it is so critical to keep your hands dry. You seem to be doing well with those with the strip sets and line through them. Durable for sure.

I've been having a super tough time streamer fishing. Do you know where I'm going wrong? I've fished streamers over 40 days this year and haven't hooked a single brown. I'm changing my fly color, size, and profile every 10 minutes, I'm changing my retrieves, and I usually get 15-20 follows every float. They'll just follow my fly for 30 feet and then lose interest. I've tried just about any fly imaginable between a slumpbuster and a triple dungeon.
@bigskia2 күн бұрын
That sounds impossible to me. With streamer fishing you should be hooking something every 1-2 hours at worst. Where are you based? what rivers? Are there browns around? And what are you using for line/leader?
@NorCalsteelheadbumКүн бұрын
@@bigskia I'm in Northern California. I'm not going to name the river because I'm one of the only people who fish it. What I will say about it is the average depth is 15 feet and it's gin clear. There's 1200 browns per mile according to a 3 year old fish and wildlife survey. I've tried lots of things for leader configurations but a 6 ft 2x leader is what gets the most follows. I've tried 3 foot leaders but they are super spooky and I don't get many follows using that. This situation sounds ridiculous but it is what it is. They just seem super selective.
@bigskiaКүн бұрын
@@NorCalsteelheadbum -- wild man! thanks for those details. I can't help a lot as that's radically different than where I fish But what I can suggest is you start targeting water that isn't gin clear. Did you ever hit the river during run off or after a storm? And if gin clear, I would lean into a very small neutral colored streamer. Perhaps a sparkle minnow. Only other though, most streamer eats are reactionary, very unlikely to get an eat after following the fly for 10+ feet. So maybe pound the bank and riffles harder and stop fishing big/deep sections.
@NorCalsteelheadbumКүн бұрын
@ I’ve fished it during high water but surprisingly it stays relatively clear. I’ve also fished sparkle minnows, bank robber sculpins, and other neutral or drab colored flies but they don’t like them. Generally, I don’t move any fish on a fly smaller than 4 inches. There are only a couple places where the water shallows a bit and there’s some runs that are 3-4 feet deep and pretty slow with some structure, the textbook streamer water. On some days that’s where I get a lot of follows and others not. When I’m throwing my fly, I hit within 6 inches of the bank every time. They are tucked up in there but they don’t come up and grab it. I don’t understand what these fish want from me.

After watching today’s lesson, I can honestly say the best change you can make is with your feet. Since KZbin, the best part of flyfishing is fly tying.

No jerk strip?
@Lanceeganflyfishing2 күн бұрын
I don’t use a jerk strip much. For me the jerk strip creates a lot of slack and takes me out of contact with the flies. Also causes me to set with the rod more than I’d like.
