Oh another carabiner hack I can adopt. I am a carabiner junkie so this works out great.

If you're fishing a flowing stream, the current will keep the water constantly mixing. Unless you are close to a spring, there is unlikely to be a lot of difference between surface temp and temp at the bottom in a moving stream or river. In still water, you'll see more temperature stratification, but you'll probably have to reach deeper than your net handle to find it.
