Thanks for the feedback on this line. I was debating on using this line in Northern CA between the late Winter to late Spring before it gets hot, but your feedback persuaded me to try it. My creek fishing using 30’ to less casting and sounds like a good all around fit.

Yeah it’s a good line for sure. You will have to dress it after awhile but without going to their higher lineup(special coatings and all that jazz ) that’s a cost savings measure I don’t mind doing. Good luck out there

@@greenhornflyhorn I just wish the next tiers up were not so expensive. Looking into other brands too that are equal for cheaper. Sometimes I feel like we are paying for the name over the manufacturing costs.

@@cradford875 i hear ya. It really is an incredible investment but unfortunately I have to say this……it’s worth it. Very painful to admit but you get what you pay for with fly lines😞

I have tried the Rio lines with the new Slick Cast coating, recently introduced a couple years ago. You can find them on sale sometimes. Folks complain about them being full of coils and lumps, but they do get broken-in after a while, resulting in big improvement, and I really like them for some rods. The Gold is sweet on any of the fiberglass rods and any graphite stick with a moderate action. But, I use the SA lines too, the Extra Distance and Standard tapers are great. The big plus about the Airflo lines is that they are made with polyurethane instead of PVC, so insect repellant (DEET) won’t mess them up like the others.

I use the saltwater MPX lines and they are a bit heavier than a true weight line. They cast well but aren't a problem with warmer water and don't sink in saltwater if you keep it clean.

I have noticed the sinking issue as well. In the field I have put on the dry fly flotant for a quick fix but it doesn't last long. Was thinking of taking the SA fly dressing with me my next outing to see if that is a better option that lasts longer. What are you using to keep the tip floating?

Forgive me but I have no idea what the product is called as overtime the packaging tore off and all that is left is the container. I bought some type of floatant at a fly shop when I first started fly fishing years ago. I will say its like a thick gel/paste. I use the line dressing just to slick things up. I use RainX winshield liquid. It works incredibly well and costs a fraction of what you get at the shop. Wish I could've been more help man.

@@greenhornflyhorn actually that is a great help. I never would have thought about trying rainX. My local waters (lower Boise River) isn’t known for the dry fly scene so I am not usually dry flying unless I take a trip else where (south or middle fork Boise, Owyhee, for example). So I started using my dry fly floatant that is a gel as a quick fix. It is an annoyance as it only lasts for about 4-5 casts then starts sinking again. I bought the line in August and I fish multiple times a week. I figured I broke my line, lol. I clean it regularly and love it otherwise but that sinking makes mending a pain. I ran across your video last night while researching. Decent replacement since spring is around the corner. Finding out I am not the only one who has noticed this issue made me feel a bit better about maybe it wasn’t just me.

I always carry a small pot of Mucilin (the original version with the red lid) when out fishing. If the line tip starts to sink, I wipe it down with a cloth or a piece of towel, then apply a thin coating Mucilin. Problem solved.

I do like this line, loved the GPX too (that was the precursor to the MPX). But, it’s not the best taper for every rod. Line pairing with each individual rod model is important and underrated, I think. That’s the reason why the fly rod shootouts have to be taken with a grain of salt, because they use the same line for all of the rods, and that’s not really fair because each rod probably has a sweet spot - that near perfect taper and weight that will optimize its performance. Hard to find fly rods these days that will cast any line well.

The gpx was a good line. Interesting comment at the end. I think it’s because the rods nowadays are more geared towards specific techniques. I do agree it’s hard to pair a line lately
