Hey there. I'm from Northern Ontario, I was wondering if there was a line that would give me decent coverage for the fish I'll be going for. I'll be going for smallmouth, walleye, lake trout (early spring), northern pike and muskies. Is there a line that would be okay for use on those species? If not would you be able to give me an idea on what lines I should buy?

I have a fast 9ft 7wt rod that will cadt a 7wt line well but it will also cast a 9wt line very well for me. That is the quandary in todays rod technology. Imo there are no rigid rules or black and white. I also have 4wt rods that i use a 3wt line most of the time. If you like slow rods one or two line wts above listed wt may well work better for you. If you like fast rods a lighter line or two may be the ticket

I been scavenging the Internet now for about 6 months, on and off! And for the life of me I can't seem to find any info about the line I need. So the idea is that I am going to fish a 8/9 switchrod with streamers pike mostly. And I wanna be casting overhead 99.9% of the time. However I need to have like an idea of the range of grain a rod like that can take overhead...that's 1. 2 it's gotta be a shooting head ( preferably integrated line) 3 it must a fast sinking lakes are dam deep in here. 😀 something like and S6,7,8 would be great. Any suggestions would be mighty appreciated. I have been using a teeny T-350 on a single hand rod previously FYI. While that still works, just feels a little outdated and wanna try something new to go with the new rod 😉

A weight forward or double taper line will both roll cast . Regards backing . On a #5 then 20ibs backing and 50 yards will be enough . It depends on the size of your reel . The backing does not only provide extra line if a fish runs a long way , but it fills the drum of the reel which makes the coils in the fly line larger , so less memory . But as a general , a #5 you are looking at 50yrd + of 20ibs backing .
