I've been fishing small to medium sized streamers on a floating line and a sinking tip line for a few years. I tie the streamers myself, and use a 5wt for river small mouth here in Michigan.

Which works better for big fish? Floating line streamer or sinking line streamer
@GentleResponseLLC

@@samharrington181 I prefer a sinking line but big fish also rise to hit meals on the surface!

@Sam Harrington if your able to pick up a sink line it's worth it forsure, but if you only can choose one stick with a floating line buy some sinking poly leaders. For most of my applications I get by with my sinking polyleaders and floating line I usually use a extra fast sink airflow polyleader I only really crack out the full sink for fishing a lake out of a boat

When I started fly fishing a few years back, I sat at home and educated myself with many of his videos while sitting on the couch with a broken leg. I used that knowledge to become a pretty competitive fly fisherman. I never get skunked and impress the old timers at times. Mostly because of these videos and the recommended books.

I've fished streamers on floating line for years. The streams are moving pretty quick here in southern oregon yet shallow at the places I fish. Short leader heavy fly usually produces pretty well. Key word is usually..

Not only does it have tons of info for us new to fly fishing streamers, but most videos do not give such an excellent assortment of what flies that we can use in our presentations but you also help us select which smaller streamers that we can attempt to tie on own as we dabble in fly tying.

Nice & informative video Brian 👍. Totally agree on the size of fly patterns 🤘, most large ( Trophy size fish) . Grow to that size, is because. They consume large amounts of smaller food items, blood worms, caronamids, leeches, dapheena, the list is endless.

How fantastic this video came out the same day I cleaned house catching smallies on the Shenandoah River using crayfish patterns (Murray's Crayfish) on a 6 wt floating line. So much fun. I get this is mostly aimed at trout river fishing but for coastal seatrout (the brown trout version, not the usa saltwater variant) we almost always use a floating line and at least 9ft leader, most of the time more like 10 to15ft and reasonably small streamers, nymphs an shrimp patterns that also don't weigh much, or have just a little bit of weight added. When there is a lot of wind and waves or some deeper water, maybe a intermediate line is used at most. It works and is a ton of fun, seeing the bow wave of a hungry trout plowing after your fly, or just get that hard take out of nowhere.

Much of everything we think we need to know (or have) is geekery, as with any topic if you dive deep enough into it. And i think the different fields of fishery cant be fully mastered in a lifetime, even if we tried. But that doesnt mean you cant get great results fast, even with modest equipment, and some research. The journey is the goal anyway, not the destination - so, start with the basics, instincts will show you the way and develop with practice. Expert-Lingo and techniques can be a bit overwhelming, as with most things worth learning - but today we can take shortcuts by using videos like this, saving us years of progress in short order. That is great. As i said, just start with the basics. The rest will follow. Enjoy the ride !

Ive pretty much only thrown streamers on floating lines or sink tip lines, in fresh water for bass/pike and trout, or salt water fishing the Puget Sound for cutthroat and salmon. Ive tried sinking lines, and I dont seem to like them as much, and only use them when I absolutely have to. The standard floating line is really versatile stuff.

This is the best instructional fly fishing channel on you tube. Thank you Brian. This video is particularly helpful to me. I fly fish with a 6wt rod with a floating fly line. Two of my favorite stream/rivers have good populations of both smallmouth and good sized native brown trout so I have always wanted to try using streamers with my set up. My question: Would you use a tippet ring or micro swivel when building a leader as you described in the video and if so at what point in the leader would you put the tippet or micro swivel? Thanks again, Jim

Thanks Brian! Another great video. I’m new to fly fishing. My Redington Trout field kit just arrived today. Thanks for your great review on that as well. My question is regarding the leader for streamers on float line. The tippet you used in the video was .010” or 1x . So my fly size would need to be 5 or 6? If I had a streamer that was smaller do I only need to change the size of the tippet section ?

What is considered, big heavy weighted flies? I throw anything from a 12 dry fly, to a beadhead, to 1/0 clousers. I have a a 5wt and a 8wt fly rods. I love throwing small streamers though. The rivers i fish range from 5" deep to 5 ' holes it, the depth is definitely wide ranged and anything from smallmouth to walleye run in it.

@@Madriveroutfittersdo trout not get spooked by the 0x and 1x leader? I only ask because I come from the world of ultralight spinning fishing. And we always use 4lb or less line to toss even spoons. I guess that’s why it felt counterintuitive but it makes sense in terms of energy transfer through the butt of the leader.

can you put a perfection loop in your homemade leader much like a commercial leader has, to help reduce the cost of buying different leaders for the different types or styles of fishing.

"Big Baits catch Big Fish" I used to alway believe that until last year when I I started catching huge fish on Ultra Light baits. This year I caught a 5lb. Rainbow on a Berkley Atomic Teaser Tube and a 7lb Pike on a Trout Magnet. So I guess Any Bait catches big fish, if you fish it right.

I have reached the same conclusion. We probably make the mistake of projecting our thinking as humans, on fish. And that is probably a big mistake.

Hi Brian, I have watched many of your videos regarding leaders , Et Al. Good stuuff, (thanks) I got it. Now how to set depth to tick the bottom or say you want to be a little higher in the water column? Could you use your white board and discuss how to set the split shots and indicator placement for proper depth for contact, as well as non contcct? Regards, -Eric

Can you fish streamers without sinking line? I've *only* used floating line in 19 years of fly fishing. In fact, I didn't even realize there was such a hard consensus _against_ floating line.

Really fun with a streamer just under the surface, if you take it home fast, and a torpedo of rainbow chasing it, for example. Or you could always play with a longer leader and weigh it down. I use almost exclusively floating line too, and occasionally a sinking tip if needed with nymphs and so on. More than one way to skin a cat 😊

I know you guys don’t answer questions so much, so I’ll ask fellow fishermen here, how would those cortland lines compare to some of the more expensive amplitude lines made by SA? Does anyone know if the cortland bass tapers, or streamer tapers hold up against something like the mpx or infinity lines?
