Great video Mr. Clark. I'm learning, just scroll past all the other fly tying instructionals and look for the Barry Ord Clark videos. If he doesn't tie it, I probably don't need it. Thank you again Sir.

Beautiful tie Barry - the Adams has been my go-to dry fly way before it became a "classic". Like the way you rotate the fly to finish off the hackles. To further date myself, I had to smile when you identified the body dubbing as "Adams Grey Superfine" ... I just use beaver fur cut right off a hide patch. Cheers and tight lines Barry! Hank

Thats Hank, yeah I just love super fine for dry flies, although I believe the original was Muskrat underfur dubbing.

@@Thefeatherbender Yes, pretty sure that you are right - the original Adams calls for muskrat which is a darker grey than beaver. I have a (very) large supply of natural materials and use "water-critter" fur (beaver, otter, mink, muskrat and racoon) for my dries and "land-critter" fur (rabbit, squirrel, woodchuck .etc) for my wets/nymphs. Don't know what "Superfine" is made of. I do use synthetics as well but most of my flies are natural earth-tone imitations of the bugs I find in the rivers. Cheers! Hank

Thats right, a cree hackle or a instant Adams hackle which is a Grizzle variant with a good amount of brown in it.

Great to see the hook flipped over to make the wing horizontal to enable the hackles to be wound in the usual manner and to whip finish on the wing post and not the hook. Why tiers persist in making things hard for themselves by winding parachute hackles in the horizontal plane and tying off on the hook is a mystery to me. If there is a "right" way and a "wrong" way, Barry's way (and Australian Mick Hall's way) is certainly the easy right way ! Its a core skill we all need to master.

Gorgeous job. Is there a reason you used the rotary function to apply the dubbing, or is it just preference? Love the way you adjust the fly position to wind the hackle. Thanks for the great videos!
@Thefeatherbender
@Thefeatherbender 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, thanks, yes there is! If you spin your dubbing tight onto your tying thread and then wrap it using your bobbin, your dubbing will unwind with each wrap of bobbin, but if you hold your bobbin in place and rotate your vice the dubbing stays tight and creates a nice tight segmented body.

In 2017 you made a video of the "perfect" parachute hackle, where you used just one hackle and stripped half the fibres off before winding. Why do you not use the same technique here? Thanks for making the best tying videos on the Tube.
@Thefeatherbender
@Thefeatherbender 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, Just two different techniques, the 'perfect' technique is best when using a single hackle but when you need a double hackle like in the Adams its best to use the traditional technique.
@iklink

Why cut it if you can just go back to the post?
@Thefeatherbender
@Thefeatherbender Жыл бұрын
Hi, the whole idea with this technique is that you don't interfere with the thorax, not totally essential with this pattern but with many others it is, just habit forming after you have done it thousands of times.

@Thefeatherbender
@Thefeatherbender 4 жыл бұрын
Hi OMT, Thanks always good to know that they help! Well this is a actually not a spinner but a dun (adult) but I do like to increase the hackle size a little on some parachute and klinkhamer patterns. If you find the videos helpful, may I also suggest this, it will take your tying to another level: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o4evoJlmqr2kr6c

Hi Michael, if you are having trouble with your hackle stems breaking, it sound like you are using a poor quality hackle i'm afraid! If you don't have super quality hackle, send me your address and I'll bang a few dry fly saddle hackles in the post to you for you to try, you won't go back afterwards.
