Fly Tying a Surefire midge fly with Barry Ord Clarke

One of those simple patterns that never seems to fail. This little black midge with a trailing UV shuck is, as the name suggests, a foolproof choice when the fish are on anything small and black. The up-side down hackle gives this midge a slightly lower profile when presented. Best in sizes from 16-24.

Mr. Clark....don't take this wrong but you should have been a surgeon! The precise work that you do in unbelievable. I have been following you for several years now and no matter how hard I try or how many times I slow your videos down I cannot get my patterns to look like yours. I am close but not close enough! The helicopter patterns you tie is what I struggle with. Out of 20 helicopter patterns I might get two that look like yours. I guess the more I tie the better I will get. Thanks for sharing all of your knowledge and skills with us viewers.

Great pattern, Mr Clarke. I strip my feathers for most parachute patterns but never tie them in "upside down." I like it!!! Thanks for sharing.

Sweet as usual, and while I don't have an alt for this fly, when I use foam tube in parachute fashion, I split the end a tiny bit with my scissors so it lays around the hook, just seems to give it a little better anchoring. Beautiful work, nice fly.

Does anyone know why he waxed the tying thread before the whip finish? Awesome fly, wish I would be able to see it further than 10 feet away!

Hi Brad, If you apply a little wax to your thread it will hold without varnishing.

he stripped one side of the hackle off before attaching it to the post. what ever side you choose to strip off dictates the direction you wind the hackle. I tend to soak the hackle in worm water for a few minutes before attaching it.
