Great tutorial on a great fly. I love the way you stick to old school basics. Andee mono, Mustad hooks...... No need to over complicate things with expensive/hard to obtain components.

The late Dick Talluer showed me a longer, thinner version of a gurgler without weed guard that worked great as a hopper imitation in August for lazy trout. Thanks for the vid.

Nicely tied & faithful to the way Jack Gartside tied it. I was a member of the same fly tying club as Jack, & took his tying classes. He tied it in the saltwater size with 5 ribs for a slightly longer body. It’s really fun to fish in fresh or salt, & the takes can be explosive.

JAck was a true master , his innovations are ssecond to none. I spent countless hours in front of him over the years, just soaking it all in. He is missed.

Jim Misiura - Were you also a UFT member? If yes, we may have met. I used to tie at the UFT booth at fly shows if that’s where you spent time with Jack.

Ok thanks a lot. I'll experiment. You've been a big help, not many people fly tie in my family so I look to people like you for help. Thanks again!

Jim, I revisited this video recently so that I can tie a couple dozen for early top water bass in Northern Minnesota as I will be there in June 2015. In green, brown, and olive variations, I absolutely murdered both smallies and large mouth bass fishing this pattern just over emerging lily pads and over reed beds just off sand bars last year. It slayed them when all else performed poorly and is now my go-to weapon for the fly rod when early bass are the quarry. Thanks again for the superior tutorial! Best, Matt

Matt Glascock Thanks Matt, I agree the gurgler is hard to beat in or near Lilly pads.

I have to say it is the 34007, unless Mustad screwed up and put the wrong label on the box. The head of this gurgler is short like Jack tied them that is why you see so much hook. Thanks for the input, Jim

The Evasote foam was what Jack origanally used. This is better then the craft store sheet foam. When I use craft store foam I use two pieces stuck together. The Evasote has a different composition, which is more bouyant. Either way you make them they are killer flies. Jim

You need to try them late in the year just as a lake with trout is about to freeze up. Trout will move into a couple feet of water. They chase down the fly like a redfish or a sunny hitting a popper. A hoot. Leave off the weed guard and tie them 10 3x or R200.

Nice video Jim. I do have a question though. Why did you specify Evasote foam rather than than the 2mm craft foam?

One final question. Can you fish the panfish jigs on a spinning outfit? Only reason I'm asking is because I'm with my mom and fly rod is at my dads and I won't see him for a while

+Dylan Williams Sure you can.

I'm only 11, so my resources are limited, and I was wondering if this fly would work with 12 lbs mono or stretch tubing, marabou instead of buck tail, and regular saddle hackle instead of grizzly hackle. Otherwise video was great and informative and I will definetly be tying this fly!
@TheFlymanJim8 жыл бұрын
+Dylan Williams That would certainly work, but I don't think using mono for flash would give much flash. Marabou is good for a tail, but you might also try craft fur from the craft store. Also material like doll hair or wig hair is a decent replacement for deer hair. You can use saddle hackle for the body or other materials, like chenille. it is mostly there to hide the thread wraps.

I've caught everything but trout on it. I just haven't used it for trout.

Hey Jim you should pick up a Right Bobbin it's incredible the difference you will notice. The bobbin actually has a drag system.
