I have fished this on the flats in Tampa day for over 20 years. When the water is flat, this drive the seatrout and ladyfish crazy. Coldest temp was about 48 degrees air temp and got into a school of ladyfish. There were about 8 of us and we got strikes and hookups on just about every cast for a few hours until we ran out of flies. Best day ever

Thanks for sharing this, Tom, it really means a lot! The Gurgler is a winner for me, no doubt. If you are able to share this video with friends, that would keep this going and help others. Thanks! Tim www.troutandfeather.com

Hey Tim - nice tie! I fish smallmouth bass in shallow rivers and find that the subtle Gurgler is often more effective than a loud Popper. Usually fish them dead drift with small strips and wiggles to make them struggle but when I see minnows jumping I will go with a white/silver Gurgler and fish it fast. I tie most of my Gurglers on #12 or #10 3x long curved hooks with a soft tail of marabou, rabbit or fox fur the same color as the foam body. I like a contrasting color for the belly and will typically use a rabbit fur dubbing loop (fur and guard hairs cut from a zonker strip) with a bit of flash added and will usually add a couple of hook-length rubber legs. Favorite colors are black/orange belly; white/silver belly; green/white belly and chartreuse/yellow belly. I have seen bass hang under the fly and examine it closely - flies the soft rabbit fur belly are usually taken without hesitation where gaudy flies are often refused. Fishing a Gurgler on a sinking line is very effective (same way to fish Boobie flies) when the fish are hanging close to the bottom. I use longer/larger skulpin/darter colored Gurglers in the lake and you never know what is going to hit them - catch a lot of nice bass and walleye on them with a short strip-pause retrieve. A great fly from Jack Gartside - thanks for the video Tim! Hank

Jack Gartside was one hell of a character, an extremely innovative flytyer, an expert flyfisher for any fish that swims, a cat lover, a man with a slightly twisted sense of humour. Basically, my idea of a renaissance man.

Whoa, very cool comment, Peter, and thanks for mentioning that. I know exactly what you mean with the smaller fish! Are you able to enlarge the pattern, which then may only attract larger fish? Thanks for taking a moment to comment. Tim www.troutandfeather.com

Going try these for the perch in the UK too. Never considered these before as floating flies are rarely the best method for perch, but on a slow sinking line they should do the business. Thanks.

Hey Tim, nice to see you tying again. I wondered how your son is coming along with fishing with dad and mom? If my question is too personal just say so. I could have emailed you privately. I Like the fly, I have read Jack's books and am a regular customer of the supplies sold on his site.All the best to you and the family. Also, say hi to uncle John for me. You should try the different secret stuff to do the body. It comes in great colors now. Sean

Hi Tim - Neat pattern. Heading to Canada This coming June. What size/color would you recommend for Grayling? RWM
@TimCammisa
@TimCammisa 5 жыл бұрын
That's a tricky one, as I haven't used these in Canada for Grayling. Personally, I would have an assortment, from #6 to #14, and #10 seems to be a great all-around size for the Gurgler. Good luck, and let me know how they work for you! You can send any pics to: tcammisa@gmail.com Thanks! Tim www.troutandfeather.com

What is the thickness of the foam?
@TimCammisa
@TimCammisa 5 жыл бұрын
There is not a set thickness, as it varies based on hook size and how high you want the pattern to sit in/on the water. I prefer to live in the 2mm - 4mm range of closed-cell foam. Thanks for checking. Tim www.troutandfeather.com

Don't forget to mention that this fly shouldnt be fished during cold weather. If you like going out in the winter, than you probably wouldnt want to fish this fly. This information only applies in freshwater though, I'm not sure how the gurgler will work in saltwater during the winter. Great vid tho
