I used to do a lot of competition fishing and in this video I am going to show you a few of my favourite patterns. I will also be discussing how to get the best from a simple but deadly method of fishing these great flies.

I have not watched this whole video before but I'm glad I did. I have fished a number of Booby patterns with no luck in the past, but I know it is just me not fishing it correctly. I'm sending you a pattern I use in the same way that has been very successful, just for fun. It is ugly but effective just like me!

That uv hot spot is a great idea. How about a spot of the same on the side of the boobie eyes to bring in trout from the side of the fly.

Thanks for this Lindsay! I'm new to the boobie style of fly and have a question about the marabou wing and tail. I've had trouble with (long) marabou and prefer to use bucktail for the wings on my flies. Do you find that the marabou twists under and fouls on the hook very much? Is there a way to minimize fouling?

I form a small bump of thread at the back before tying in the tail that helps.

Since the demise of Trout Fisherman and Total Flyfisher magazines is there one you would recommend that is geared towards stillwaters and flytying? I have tried Fly Fishing and Fly tying magazine but I have found it to be quite dated any not wishing to upset anyone it is slanted to Scottish interests. I find your videos and those by Dave McPhail to be way ahead of any others.

Thanks Mike always nice to be mentioned it the same breath as Davie. He is one of my fly tying heroes. In regards to magazines I have written for a few over the years. I think the best of them is Today’s Fly Fisher but it is temporarily suspended due to COVID.

You tend to avoid the fly being weeded up as it is barbless catches a lot less weed.

Boobies and or fabs when used correctly work. When the Boobie and suspender buzzer first appeared with a polystyrene head wrapped in stocking material. Total nightmare
