When I used to fish a lot of competitions fishing a single booby was one of my banker methods. In this video I explain how to tie and fish this competition legal fly.
The idea of adding the small hot spot underneath the booby eye was show to me by Mike Connet. It not only adds value to the pattern in giving the fish that target area to hit it also helps to finish the fly off really nicely.
Let me know what your favourite way is to fish booby style patterns in the comment section below.

Another great video. We all know the hotspot is definitely a great way to add a bit of bling to flies , but I bet it catches more fisherman than fish lol. 👍

I fished with Mike in the Summer and he was definitely making his fly with the hotspot work better than mine. Best to have both I think ;-)

I've been using resin as wee hotspots for a few years now on sea trout saltwater flies Lindsay !! The Scandinavian guys have been doing it for ages , its a great trigger point!! I add it on zonkers ect on the under skin at the tail 👍

Small dark flies fished deep are an often missed and underrated tactic. Often fish will become wary of bling and bright flies. Then a dark pattern is more likely to entice a take. The combination of the peacock herl body adding a natural lifelike effect with the small hot spot giving just enough for the fish to notice without spooking it. It has a similar effect as the collar on a Muskins. The less is more approach works.

What do you think about the resin hot spot? It's nice and bright do you think it's hotter than using a fluo thread to tie the fly?
@lindsayiflyfish

Great question Martyn, I think on booby patterns the resin hot spot works well on others glo-brite floss is just as good. I really believe as regards fishing its all about confidence in the pattern. I always maintain that if you are 100% sure it's going to work, invariably it does. I could write a book on this subject but I will leave it at that, I hope it goes some way to answering your question.

@@lindsayiflyfish Aye I was just wondering as it looks like a nice wee bead of colour, but then the bead shape is porbably less important than the colour being there you know.

@@FlickingFeathers Agreed I think a wee flash of colour can make a difference, sometimes though I think we might be guilty of putting too much thought into it ;-)

Hello, I think this video ( it's the first I've watched on your channel) is brilliant. I'm very interested in learning to tie my own flies so I am wondering how much it would cost to get started. I have only ever bought flies and think learning to tie my own would be very therapeutic as well as satisfying when (IF) I would ever catch a trout on a home made fly. So how much would it cost to start and what would you recommend getting to start, ie: what materials to get and use and what hardware would be best to get. Thanks in advance. PS: I've also subscribed 👍🏻

Thanks for watching the video. The first thing I will say to you is tying your own flies will not save you money... trust me. What you will get is hours of pleasure and the knowledge that you have tied the fly yourself. Start with a cheap fly tying kit to see if you are going to like it. No point in spending a load of money if you find it's not for you. If you do enjoy it spend good money on scissors these are essential. Buy the best vice you can afford it will last a lifetime. As far as materials go have a good think about the flies you would like to tie and just buy that. I hope that at least gives you a starting point pal.

Always eager to learn from your tutorials. Thank you. Would it not be right to add tiny resin ''eye balls'' to the boobies? Just a micro dot of bright yellow or green could act as another ''hot spot''. Just trying to think of another tool to add to my bag of tricks... Or box of flies. Thanks so much. ''Tight lines''!
