The Hidden Bulkhead Hollow Fleye is a lightweight, big profiled fly that is perfect for chasing Pike and Musky, as well as any large predatory gamefish. The Freestyle pattern is modeled after Bob Popovics Hollow Fly and finished with Popovics reverse Bulkhead Technique - Popovics has two fantastic tying resources: Pop Fleyes, and Fleye Design, which are highly recommended. This video focuses on the Hollow Fleye Technique of reverse tying, as well as the Hidden Bulkhead technique used to finish the head and create the proper silhouette and balance to the fly. Both techniques are excellent to know and have at the ready for tying up big predatory flies.
Material List
Hook: Ahrex TP610 4/0
Thread: Flymaster Plus 210 Denier
Bucktail: White, Pink, and Chartreuse
Magnum Flashabou: Silver, Mint, Opal
Polar Flashabou: 2004 - Pink Pearl, and 2011 - Emerald Rainbow
Peacock Herl
Saddle Hackles: Grizzle, and Dyed Olive Grizzle
The recipe is as follows - the Flying being spit between 4 Hollow ties and 2 Reverse Bulkhead ties
1: Hollow Tie with Magnum Flashabou (16 strands at full hank length - cut in half and tied in 80/20), 3 Grizzle hackles (1 on either side and one on top), with 2 Olive Grizzle Hackles splitting the difference.
2: Hollow tie with Polar Flash top and bottom
3: Hollow tie with Polar Flash top and bottom, add two Olive Grizzle Hackles that are shorter and bleed into the previous hackles
4: Hollow tie with new color (pink), Polar Flash top and bottom, Add Peacock Herl (10-15 strands, back of fly only)
5: First Reverse Bulkhead Tie (Pink), omit Polar Flash, Add Peacock Herl (shorter than previous, 10 - 15 strands, top only)
6: Final Reverse Bulkhead Tie (blended Chartreuse with Pink) - no accents

Gunnar, I'm sure I don't speak for the entirety of your viewership, however I'm also sure that there are far more people than just myself who've gained an immense percentage of their tying knowledge by listening to you talk as you tie. Personally, I would be willing to watch a full length, uncut, normal speed video of your tying tutorials just to gain a few extra tidbits of your knowledge and experience. The way you explain the principles behind your designs is the sole reason why I watch your videos three or four times each and typically only watch other Fly-Tying channel videos once. My only request would be to do a few more casting and fishing technique videos, especially pertaining to hunting Largies, Smallies and Stripers from boats or floats on big stillwater lakes. Where I live (Vetgas), the nearest body of water is Lake Mead, therefore everyone I know fishes gear and suggests that it is the only way to be consistent. The nearest place I have to try out your advice is almost a three hour drive! Please keep up the fantastic work and feel free to elaborate about tying, casting, or fishing to your heart's content! I really can't thank you enough for the quantity of high-quality work you share with us on KZbin!

I would have to agree 100% with that Neo. I have watched every fly tying video of his and many of them have this Hollow Flye technique and I still don't mind it being 30 minutes long.

The thing I love about your videos is that you don't say "Do this, then do this..." You explain HOW to do things, and more importantly, WHY to do it that way. Your explanations about fly action are about as important as showing us the "recipe" in the pattern. With the knowledge you impart in your bids, I feel like I can freestyle a fly to match the baitfish in my local environment. I recently got Bob Pop's 2nd book, and as a proud resident of New Jersey, born and raised, I'm a HUGE fan of his!

Nice , love this stuff . Been tying a long time and as I watch your videos it makes me excited about all of the variations that can be done on just this platform. With the amount of colors available of all the materials used the combinations are endless . Thanks:-)

Appreciate your channel so much. I've been tying only since October, but it's vastly grown from overdubbed nymphs with a cheap vise. To making articulated and hollow tied pike streamers.

Hands down best top 5 clip on this platform about the subject, still 2 the 5 others of them are yours...😁 Natural sense of tying proportions and communications skills at the same time , straight to the point, I just miss the part in the water 🤔.Lot of info, a must to watch it more than once!! Thank you for sharing!! Best Mag

I always look forward to when you have the time to put up a fly tying instructional video like this. I like your teaching style and don't mind you talking through each step. I have watched every one of your tying videos from 20-50 minutes long and even though I am not a novice nor a professional commercial fly tier of streamers, I don't get bored or wonder why the video is so long. Keep up the great work and I look forward to learning more on the next one. Tight Lines.

Thank you so much for sharing. Very beautiful! I’m not a specialist but from the researchers I’ve done so far regarding steelhead fishing (particularly in British Columbia, CA) I believe your fly could be easily used for targeting steelheads as well.

Is there any foam you would recommend that I could tie on the shank of my hook and hide under buck tail. It would get wet and add weight to the fly and be soft enough not effect the hook set?
