One of the best bass and saltwater flies created in my opinion is the reverse bulkhead fly. This water pushing, flowing, and flashy fly is a variation on bob popovics design. I’m not the only person to tie it like this though, as many people have taken the reverse bulkhead design and tweaked it to their likening, like adding feathers or using synthetics. However this version is my favorite that I’ve used, because it just flat out works!
Species this fly will work on are bass (largemouth and smallmouth), stripped bass, redfish, sea trout, tarpon, snook, salmon, and pretty any species that eats other fish. I like this red/white combo for stained water, but you could tie it in any color combo for your local areas and fish forage.
Don’t forget to check out these awesome priced hooks at www.risenfly.com and enter my discount McFly at checkout to get 15% off everything in their shop!
As always I’m listing the materials I used on this fly.

As usual there are lots of good tying hints here (on material handling, properties and assembly) that go well beyond the how to's of building a recipe. There is something to be learned here for new and seasoned tyers alike. Another great job! Keep em coming!

That was an excellent tutorial! You clearly illustrated all the prep work and what type of hair and feather to use then tied a great pattern. When I started tying bucktail jigs for walleye I had a dyed black tail and cut the hairs from the base. That hair flared like crazy and I couldn't figure out why... until I read an article about a tyer having the same problem and Bob Popovics told him what the problem was and not to toss that tail out. The article went on how to tie the bulkhead. That was a great color combo too, classic red and white. Thanks Shawn, God speed and tight lines. :o)

Hey Joe! I caught half a dozen smallmouth bass (two 15 inchers) and two pike on a simpler, 2 inch long version of this fly yesterday morning. A white bucktail body, bit of flash and a red bucktail bulkhead. The feathers Shawn uses add to the profile but the local fish were keying in on small minnows. Bob Popovics book "Fleye Design" is a favorite of mine! Cheers! Hank

@@joeduca8582 Darren is a good guy, he didn't hesitate to send me some squirmy material so I could tie up a couple of damsels so I thought it as only fair to return the favor. I have been catching walleye on a clouser streamer tied with orange lambswool (from a "feather-duster ") with a black head/back and also with a yellow/olive one - the whole hook shank is weighted with copper wire so the fly settles horizontally (mostly, it does "jig" a bit) and I fish them right on the bottom - long pauses with short, gentle lift/strips. Been working well for me in the lake.

@@hankvana2149 Yes Darren is A1 in my book. He's given me a lot of advise, flies and comradeship. I'm just in awe of the way you split those tails, so clean you can eat of them! Mine always break so I just dry on the bone, same with the deer tails. Yeah I read about your $tore wool "duster", lol, I found one in my $tore too, but in white. Yours is a strip spiraled on a tube? Mine may be the same, though I didn't notice a seam. So how do you use the wool? Like bucktail for the wing or dubbed over the wire? My best clouser type pattern color for walleye is black over yellow over white on Onieda Lake. A co-worker said his father always did well with it so he asked me to tie some jigs for him, it's supposed to imitate a "baby" walleye.Hey thanks for the chat, you're a pretty great guy yourself! Cheers!

@@joeduca8582 Yup, The dusters come in 3 sizes with a 3/4 inch wide, 14 to 20 inch long, strip of sheepskin tacked in a spiral to a plastic tube. Fibers are 2 - 2 1/2 inches long on mine. I usually make a tapered dubbing brush and palmer that on the weighted shank - makes a full bodied fly that doesn't foul easily. Very "marabou like" in action - like it a lot! Can send a picture if you would like.

@@hankvana2149 Ok, mine is like fleece. I thought is was synthetic but it said 100% wool. Yeah I'd like to see a pick of the pattern, but how would you send it?

Nice fly Shawn. This particular color combination is also a good pike fly for those of us in the north country. This is very similar to what Lefty Kreh claimed was the best small fly ever, the red and white hackle fly. Keep up the good videos buddy.

Thanks man! Yeah pike for sure! Tie it on a larger hook and don’t cut down the buck tail as much and you have a good pike fly.
