Phil is from Utah, where I live - this is a staple fly on our local tailwater, the Provo River. I know this fly is also very commonly used in this same color scheme to imitate BWOs, esp. the tiny ones we get in the fall. But it also works well as a midge given our late winter Buffalo midge hatch.

Nice tie. I have been tying these for years from an old book on my shelf. your taming the hackle is spot on and frankly helpful. I tend to over wrap my figure 8 wraps but suffer on the head wrap’s which yours look much better than mine because of my thread buildup from the figure 8s. Happy to see someone else help me out with this pattern. Thanks for the video and sorry for my critique. Thank you

Hi Geoff, I do a whole chapter on wax and its uses in my new book out later this year. But in short it helps with everything, it grips materials, it prolongs the life of your flies, it stops difficult/slippery materials from slipping... every tyer should use it!

i tied some with a slim body as you did, and a few with some ' meat' on them.. at lease on my california stream,, they like the ' meater' version better
