Fly Tying Tips from the Pro's, Holsinger's Fly Shop, 500th Episode

I can't believe it myself, but somehow I managed to make it to 500 KZbin videos. It's been a long and fun ride bringing you these videos every week. I was trying to come up with a cool way to celebrate my 500th and it took me a while but then I realized I would be attending the International Fly Tying Symposium right at the same time. I've been attending and tying at these shows for a few years now and have had the opportunity to make some great friends along the way. So I figured while I was at the show I would ask some of my friends for a quick tip to share with you guys. One extra tip I didn't mention in the video is to take the opportunity to go to the fly tying shows if there is any in your area. If you can go to one don't be afraid to to go talk to the tyers and ask them questions. That's what we are there for, we are there to help make you guys better tyers by sharing our knowledge with you.

Bravo on the 500th episode Shawn!! Best piece of knowledge I’ve taken from your many many videos, and I think about all the time when I watch any tying video, is that it’s OK if you don’t have the exact color of chenille, feather, tinsel, wire, or leg material being used in the video. You always say, use what materials you have, and experiment with different combinations and colors. It’s made tying SO much more fun for me. Looking forward to your next post!

Thank you so much!!! That was a lesson I learned early. 35 years ago when I started you didn’t hop online and order what you needed. I had to drive 50 miles to the closest fly shop and hope they had what I wanted, so you learned to substitute and you quickly find it out works. Thanks for watching.

Congrats bud. One tying tip I have to say is don’t be afraid to experiment or modify a pattern to suit you better. Another one is kiss or keep it stupid simple. Don’t over complicate things. We fly fishermen and women buy with our eyes and what looks best in our eyes but the fish don’t give a crap. They will be happy just eating a stick floating by

@@HolsingersFlyShop it’s honestly the truth. Now as a tier who sells my stuff have I seen people buy with their eyes and the answer is yes but when you show them what you were getting them on the say that won’t catch a fish. Sometimes the simplistic approach is best

Hahahaha. Thanks! My beard has become almost like my trademark. I have a beard routine now and go to an old school barber who trimmed me up before the show. I’ll cut Cheech some slack blame his beard on that dry Utah air 😂😅😂
