This is a fantastic tutorial, Dan. And holy smokes, the flex on your rod when you're loading it while you explain the double haul technique is amazing! At a few points in the video, especially at the 6:10 mark, your rod makes a nearly perfect "C." I started fly fishing a little over 30 years ago when I was still in high school. Although I didn't know the official names of these techniques, apparently I've been using them this whole time - except for the last one you explained. I'll have to learn that one. Thanks for all of your videos and keep posting more, please!

FFD, five great tips to help people cast - nice ! You always seem to be fishing gorgeous water (well, at least most of the time 🙃). Home river is THIN now and I'm hooking up the trailer this morning to head over to fish the Deschutes for the first time tomorrow, on our way to the coast; wife needs some "beach time". And yeah, I'm looking forward to some fresh seafood. ☮ from Idaho.

About 42 years experience here. I'm 48 and learned on vacation in Colorado. Got better over the years and can now cast almost anything 30 to 80 feet with accuracy. That is a good distance for bass and salt which is what I do most. If you fly fish much, you will have people asking to learn more about it. It happens all the time. Especially if you are catching more than they are. I usually give a quick lesson. But, I wanted to suggest something I regularly do in practice. Cast with NO fly and feel it if you are a new caster or old. Then tie on various sized and wind resistant flies. For practice it helps me to remember the feel the few times I have gone any length of time without fishing.

Awesome - the single and double haul can help during windy situations...and casting side-armed and low can too. Hope this helps!

Where I am in Florida, many spots from the bank I need to do a side cast. So many trees! I love your tutorials and regular fishing videos, it would be awesome to see bonefish some day or whatever you like! I love seeing both trout fly fishing and bass, saltwater, tarpon, reddish, all of it!

Hey @FlyFishDan, have you ever used corkies and yarn on a sinking line in a river like the Puyallup?

I have not - usually pretty busy with gear fisherman, don’t want to hook anyone on the back cast! :))

Im having 2 major problems, Either I manage to shoot the line but the floating line lands right next to the fly and ruins the presentation, or the line hardly shoots at all but the fly lands perfectly with the tippet and leader far away from the floating line. Very frustrating, have you any advice for this specifically? Thanks
@FlyFishDan
@FlyFishDan 9 ай бұрын
When the floating line lands right next to the fly line - generally that's due to a trailing loop (catches the fly line midair and then lands the way you described). Trailing loops are caused by using too much power, the rod over flexes and catches itself when you finish the cast. To help correct this, I would start off my using this casting technique, I am confident that this will help: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bHbGh5qVgqacfrM

I've tried double-hauling. My problem is that when I haul on the forward cast there's no tension in the line and it doesn't feel like I'm doing anything to the rod. Is this because I'm forward casting before the line has fully unrolled behind me, or is it because I'm hauling too early in the forward cast, or both?
@FlyFishDan
@FlyFishDan 5 ай бұрын
Likely hauling just a tad bit early - the line has to full extend out behind you, and right when you begin to bring the rod forward you pull down on the line with your non-casting hand.
