Carp on the Fly

This is my go to fly. Almost anywhere I fish so start with this. Most of the time so don’t change it. This fly flat out catches Carp and lands softly.

I'd love to see more fly tutorials and maybe a fly box tour. A dedicated video on fly selection based on conditions would be helpful as well.

I like it. That sounds like a great video for when the weather turns. I’ll get that done.

Thanks a lot for sharing your carp fly. It looks awesome! Effective carp flies do not have to be complicated.
@carponthefly8282
@carponthefly8282 2 жыл бұрын
That is generally my rule of thumb. You could certainly complicate this fly to your hearts content, add legs along the body like a mantis shrimp, put some underwing flash, add wire for ribbing, dubbing loop, etc etc. It is just not needed. I like simple flies that work. I tie an upside down simi seal leach that is even more basic. And it work awesome too, it’s usually my second fly if the Maul gets refused a few times. Then I go smaller to a hybrid. And that is about all I ever use. I probably have over 1000 Carp flies, and I use 3 for subsurface fishing anyway.

I love it when a fly doesn't look like anything natural, is easy to tie.....and seems to catch a lot of fish 😉

Glad to hear it. It’s a simple pattern that just works. My kind of pattern for sure. I love looking at intricate patterns and fishing with the simple effective ones.

That is bigger than I would have expected! I have been fishing pretty small flies, but I'll have to tie up some slightly bigger ones for this weekend. I've had a bunch of mudding carp that never find my fly. The longer I spend dropping it around their head in the mud cloud, the closer I am to spooking them. I've been thinking that something more substantial would be a ticket to those fish. Either spook them fast or get a bite fast, I reckon. I did have a couple of aggressive ones this past weekend actively chase and inhale the fly. I think it was largely due to the water being a little more clear (better than the 6" clarity I've been fishing), and you could tell these fish were actively seeking baitfish.

I do tie them smaller for various situations. Clearer water I tend to tie and fish smaller flies. But in muddy waterI do think bigger is better to a point. You need to get their attention and they can’t see all that well in chocolate milk either. The other thing I try to do when Carp are mudding in dirty water is try to time their transition moments. I wait for them to stop mudding in one spot and hit them while they transition. Sometimes it’s a guessing game because they are hard to see, but I have better luck doing that than dropping it in and waiting.

Cool pattern. Many people won’t use any glue or resin on their carp flies
@carponthefly8282
@carponthefly8282 2 жыл бұрын
I think if you are using the type of pattern that you just leave on the bottom and let her Cero find it, the concern is scent from the resin or glue. And I get that, but I also think if you rub some local mud into the fly it masks that scent. It probably costs me the occasional fish, but for me I like that the flies stay together.

Because the eyes are plastic, these flies do not sink very quickly do they? You use these mostly in very shallow water? Looks like that is what I saw on your overhead coverage of your drag and drop cast. By the way, you have the best (Drone?) footage of you casting out to the carp! Thank you so much for making these videos in KZbin!

Yes, I do tie this same fly in bead chain and with dumbbell eyes. By this specific fly I use for really skinny water. I’m glad you are enjoying the videos. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Great pattern! I was wondering if you have tried tying this pattern with marabou and if it made a difference either way?
@carponthefly8282
@carponthefly8282 2 ай бұрын
I have. It works fine with marabou. The craft fur seems to do a little better job of creating drag and flipping the fly. At least that’s my experience with it. But it does work with marabou.

There are a lot that will work, but I like the Wapsi barred round the most. But so wouldn’t stress about which ones too much. For smaller versions I have used the smaller centipede legs and that works well too.

Hey Bud. Your videos are great and would like to try this fly, but don’t have access to this fly. Would you be able to tie a variety of sizes in this pattern? I don’t have the equipment to tie flys. Of course I’d pay you to tie the fly and ship them. Please let me know if your interested. Thanks

Is there a certain size bead chain and color that you like?
@carponthefly8282
@carponthefly8282 Жыл бұрын
As far as color goes, I have used black, silver, and gold. They all work. I think for extra spooky fish, black is better. But I have nothing to go by but my gut on that. 3.4mm is the best overall size and matches up with what most fly shops call medium bead chains.

How do the faux pearls not slide off the string when you cut them?
@carponthefly8282
@carponthefly8282 Жыл бұрын
They are attached to the string when you get faux pearl strings. I also started dabbling a little bit of UV res on the side when I finish the tie. That has helped them from falling apart. With the UV res they are more durable than the mono eyes. You are looking for singing like this, but in black. I can get them at my local craft store. Kinda looks like an underwater cicada.
@carponthefly8282
@carponthefly8282 Жыл бұрын
A little bit, tapered tail and larger head is Cicada lol for sure. It’s an impressionistic pattern similar to the salt water pattern Rubber Legs Gotcha. If you have ever fished for bonefish. If there are leaches, damsels, or small crayfish, it does a pretty good job of representing all of them. I even used on on a slow day on the Missouri River out side Craig Montana and caught a 25” Rainbow on this exact pattern. It’s a simple pattern to tie that flat out catches fish. My favorite kind of pattern.
