A review of the Danica Danvise, a true rotary fly tying vise at approximately $100-110 US (as of September 2021).
Available on Amazon at: amzn.to/3kEmkji
Savage Flies is a project with the mission of encouraging and teaching fly tying to as many people as possible. The channel is named after one of my western Maryland homewaters, the Savage River. I've been uploading three new tying videos a week, with the occasional extra video on other days.
Thanks for stopping by. Please let me know in the comments if you have any tying tips you would like to share or if you have any patterns you would like to see tied here.

Matt, I have tied on this vise for 20+ years and have been very satisfied with it. When I bought it I bought the vise extension piece as I felt the jaw location was squished together with the main body of the vise, and the extension piece spread things out. I too had to replace the jaws a couple of times. The original jaws were soft and I got a replacement free, but I had to pay shipping. The second jaw set opened up after a 6 or 7 years, but the set I have on are still on and don't give any hook grip problems. I am left handed tyer and the rotation tension adjustment kept loosening in use. I replaced the threaded metric nut inside the body with one having a nylon locking insert in the threads ( acts like a lock washer). That cost about $ 0.50 at Home Depot, and that fixed it. I assume this was becauseI the vice was designed to be used by predominantly righties. Good basic rotary. When I bought mine it was less than $ 100 including the jaw extension piece. I tied commercially on this vise for over 10 years.

Thanks Colin; I appreciate the feedback my friend! One time long ago I recommended a book and they guy told me he didn't like it and I felt terrible. It's not like I'm Oprah or anything, but if I'm going to review something that someone might buy based on my recommendation, I want them to know how I really feel. As far as books go, I'll just skip reviewing one that I wouldn't recommend. But this vise? I'd already bought it so I thought I might as well tell everybody what I think.

I have this vise for tying hair jigs sizes 10-2/0. I've had it over a decade and I'd estimate I've run more than 10,000 hooks through it and it has held up great. If you are careful about adjusting the jaw tension the jaws will last a very, very long time. My original jaws lasted about 8 years and I'm still using the second set. I don't tie anything really small though. My setup is different than most, though. I started out with a "deluxe" fly tying kit from Cabela's that came in a wooden case. The pedestal that came with it fit the Danvise and I tie sitting in a recliner with the case sitting in my lap and all my tools and materials laid out on it. The Danvise is just perfect for this and at this point I'm so used to tying on it anything else would probably seem like a downgrade. 😂

Great review! The Danvise was actually my first rotary vise and I still use it a lot for flies that might get my beautiful Regal vise dirty. :) I would recommend this vice for anyone's first rotary vice, it is pretty easy to use. My only issue is that after about a year the tips of the jaws opened up a bit and couldn't hold anything under a size 12. I did buy replacement jaws and nothing else has gone wrong since. I was given the vice used and I am going to guess that it was at least 10 years old when I got it so the durability seems acceptable for how much it had been tied on. I am not a vice expert for sure but I have been impressed by the Danvice so far, although there might be other vices like you said that have more bang for your buck. Keep up the great content!

Thanks Justin; I appreciate the feedback my friend! And yeah, overall I could see this vise lasting a pretty long time. But maybe I'm just spoiled tying on my Regal for the last few years and that made this one hard for me to use. But in all fairness, this will be a decent vise for someone, particularly if they don't yet tie on a rotary.

I got this vice at least 20 years ago. I'm not the most productive fly tyer in the world but it has never let me down and I did fill up my various fly boxes a few times using it. Tied everything from #18 klinkhammers to #4 saltwater trout flies. Don't have much to compare it to as it always did the job just fine and couldn't justify spending more. Things I don't like is tying tube flies on it and I never got along with the weird clamp. I bought a cheap pedestal for it which is much nicer to use.

That was my first vice. It served it’s purpose. I still use it as my travel vice when I wanna tie when away on a business or family trip and don’t wanna have to worry about losing my Renzetti. I really have only one complaint about it but it’s a big one. The steel jaws are very soft and are easily damaged with too much pressure.
@SavageFlies

Yeah, I could see that being the case. But for a casual tier, this thing will probably last a fairly long time. But for those of us who tie a lot, jaws that wear out too quickly are a deal breaker.

I bought a Dan vice when they 1st came out it is still the only vice I use. I didn't get the cam lock version as there were some reported issues at the time. The screw lock version is possibly slower, but you get to adjust the angle between the jaws & sometimes that is the only way to hold some hooks secure, because of their shape. I did initially find that the rotary lock didnlt work well, but examining revealed th ewashers were somewhat cone shaped. By carefully pairing these up I was able to get sufficient friction to lock or free the rotation as desired.

I wouldn't mind a #Danvise at all. I already tied some flies on one and it got the job done. I was even surprised that it goes pretty high without feeling unstable. Anyway, nice review, cheers!

Thanks Olof. And you're right; there's not much wobble to it, but it's just hard for me to tie small flies with the bulky jaw mount. This thing might be great if you tied a lot of big flies. :-)

Got this vise for about 50$ over 20 years ago. And it is still the vise I use today. It's also the vise a friend uses and he is selling flies for a living. Why we both like it? We can really tighten the hell out of it and it really stays in place. I also use this vise to prep my salmon leader snail knot and it's really holding as I pull super hard.
