As much as San Francisco is a beautiful place, it's mountain goat territory. The perfect city to test and cruise with Brompton Electric. Discover a new way to move. #ChargeUnfoldGo

The weight of this bike will kill me if I try lugging it back to my abode four floors up, in London nonetheless. I have an S3L instead.

The 2 speed - at 13.7kg - is one of the least heavy e-bikes. But I take your point: it is a definite downside of each-bikes if you can’t roll it everywhere.

Mr Wrong You can quite easily detach the battery and carry it separately with the carrying case and its shoulder-strap it's integrated with so it's hardly heavier to carry around (and up or down stairs) than the unelectrified versions.

@@FerryXtheMercy Good point, but it’s still 3 kg heavier because of the motor and odd bits and pieces

@@petergilbert72 Absolutely true, that's why I wrote "hardly" heavier. But I guess that's rather a vague, subjective and relative notion 🤔 The price is a bit 'heavy' too, so personally I'll stick with my 6v S-bar strictly human powered Brompton while my back and legs are still willing and able 🙂

Manny Francisco unlike a full size bike a Brompton is designed to stay with you at all times, you just fold it up and take it with you whether that’s to the office, coffee shop etc I’ve never locked mine outsider, you can of course but you will find you don’t have to as you can simply fold and store it somewhere.

Poor reliability! Brompton needs to sort out an extended warranty or it will put off everyone buying one! Own it for a month less than 50 miles done, had few main parts replace. With the rubbish dealership network they have took 2 months to repair due to Brompton not able to send parts within their network promptly.
@bluecalvette
@bluecalvette 3 жыл бұрын
@bearbear807 That is truly the downside of E-Brompton. Mine took longer than 2 months to get repaired. The lights quit working and after replacing the controller five times and the front wheel once they figured out that the light was blowing out the controller. The light worked as a standalone but not when connected to the system. I'm sure it would have been fixed faster in London. I have 3 other Brompton's so I wasn't without a bike during the time it was in the shop. It's a great bike and am glad I bought it.

I had a somewhat better experience. My dealer - The Bike Hut Exeter - diagnosed a faulty motor, Brompton didn't quibble and sent a complete new wheel. I was back on the road in a week. I think that Brompton have recently upped their game re repairs. They have to stand by their product. That said, It would be nice if the guarantee period was at least 3 years for the electric bits as well as at least 500 full charge cycles for the battery. The frame already has the standard 7 year warranty.

@@FerryXtheMercy because with rim brakes and small wheels the rim easily overheat to the point of catastrophic failure this is especially true in a hilly area.
@FerryXtheMercy
@FerryXtheMercy 3 жыл бұрын
Kristian Overgaard Interesting, even for 16" wheels it would seem the rims still have a much larger surface to dissipate that heat through than any (bicycle oriented) brake disc. Furthermore rim brakes operate at a larger radius than disc brakes, further away from the wheel hub, so need less force /pressure to achieve the same level of friction and deceleration. 🤔 And more importantly the electrical engine, esspecially in the relatively small front wheel, leaves little or no room for a disc brake exactly where it would be most effective (the front wheel). The rear wheel of any bike can not supply much braking force, and even more so in a folding bike with small wheels. So you're asking for the impossible (wrt the front wheel) and the useless (for the rear wheel) What _would_ be interesting is if, just like is common in (4 wheel) EVs, the engine could be used for recharging the battery, to turn the kinetic energy into something useful instead of just heat...
@kristianovergaard1112
@kristianovergaard1112 3 жыл бұрын
@@FerryXtheMercy guess the entire bicycle industry is wrong when they are switching away from rim brakes in favor of disc brakes?! Also with good reason other motorized vehicles are using disc brakes over their rim counterparts.
@kristianovergaard1112
@kristianovergaard1112 3 жыл бұрын
@@FerryXtheMercy Disc brakes don't heat the rim, which has been known to cause tire blowouts on long descents when rim brakes are used. Disc brakes allow for more precise braking, making wheel lockup less likely. Disc brakes work better than rim brakes in wet weather. ... It's easier to use wider tires with disc brakes.

It’s about freedom. We’re free to let our hair blow, or not, as we wish. Defo on downhill mountain biking a helmet is a very useful safety device, but out in the streets it’s different.
@FerryXtheMercy

Peter Gilbert Spot-on, and quite likely that is exactly why they show both options in the video. Furthermore for a folding bike with extreme compactness and portability as usp carrying a helmet is cumbersome and detrimental to these advantages. It seems the OP doesn't really understand the intended (main) use for these bikes...

I've been riding this bike for about a month kzbin.infoUgkxwC0IIeIomGQVeBWg-kKJaToZkLEFIA2W and a half now and I think it's fantastic. It helps me get to work on time every day since I'm able to fit it inside of public transportation rush hour. The price is great too, people are always shocked when they ask me how much I paid for the fold up and I tell them "200". It's easy to fold and installation when it ships is insanely easy. All you have to install when the bike arrives is one foot pedal, everything else is done for you. I do recommend you carry some sort of wrench to tighten any loose screws on the handle bar and seat whenever they get a little bit loose. Other than that I think it's a fantastic bike. Easily fits in the home, can fit inside a car trunk and can even fit in subway rush hour.
Should you get a Brompton? Four year opinion.
