As a younger man I used to live in Thatcham. I used to bowl in the US airbase bowling alley and fly my model aircraft using the main runway as our runway. Loads of objections from locals but we flew there until 1996. It wasn’t uncommon to be asked to move to one side whilst a Galaxy or Hercules would land or takeoff. We would fly twice a week in all sorts of weather conditions and I have many happy memories of being there with my friends. I was once told that Greenham Common was an alternative landing site for the space shuttle but I don’t know if that’s true? It’s a shame to see it all dismantled and the runway now gone but I guess that’s progress. One thing that can’t be erased are the memories of the years living in Thatcham and going to Greenham common mixing with Americans and having a good time.
