6:47 a japanese strategy is to lay a felvine bomb, use an item to buff up, the bomb explodes shortening the animation (felvine bombs don't do damage), and now you're buffed up with a pink mist on you than lasts 3 minutes (same amount of time as the buff). When the mist expires, so does the buff.

The damage you're missing out on by skipping early ballistas is costing you a considerable amount of time. With speed gather you can also make better use of the on-deck cannons and ballista ammo. Cannon shots are just good body damage, and ballista shots to his tusks give that satisfying "Wahhh!" break (and jaw damage). Even though you'll eventually go through all of the shots (cannonballs disappear, ballista shots run out) they return in the second phase. With Heavy Artillery you'll be breaking the cracks, tusks, arms (both) so easily that you'd really only leave the ship to drop the anti dragon bombs on one of his tusks for massive tusk damage. And honestly, even all of that could be skipped if you just low-recoil some HBG pierce shots into his face; honestly I enjoy the hustle of a Speed Gather set to get the most of the siege experience, but getting the final showdown prompt early with HBG because you're over-damage-skipping his ship jumps will probably feel like a sweet, soothing balm for you. But final remark, in second phase siege god mode mouth ballista sniper mode, you can actually push him so far back with staggers that he falls over dead out of the map and can no longer be carved. Your only real plan flaw here is continuing to lance attack spots you'll bounce off of (inside the broken crack) dealing only 25% of your damage and losing sharpness at an accelerated rate when you could be shooting him in the face with ballista and cannon shots after your manual breaks are done on the two back spots. (Although a fully charged GS strike to these zones won't bounce, as mentioned earlier, so it can be satisfying to set up shop in there, too.) Not to take away from your achievement though. You did it the hardest way possible and succeeded. I have played every monster hunter game since the first and always ran solo, so trust me when I feel your pain and pride in getting over a personal hurtle, and doing it your own way.

Fighting Jhen when I was a kid is one of the last times I remember feeling truly happy. The contortionist speedrunner strats needed to clear this quest solo make perfect sense to me because (imo) you’ve basically going into the fight with 3 arms tied behind your back. I think the thing that made me enjoy this fight so much was its ability to turn strangers from the hub into comrades in arms. Maybe I just got lucky with lobbies, but it seemed like everyone always had an important role to play in the fight. A would take the ballista and have the Binder ready, B and C would be running like hell getting ammo for the cannons, and D (usually a veteran of the PS2 games or FU) would be going beast mode with bombs, perfect timed melee, and she’d never miss a Dragonator shot. There was just this thrill whenever someone would get a last-second gong to stop a body slam, it felt like getting away with something against the rules (even though everything was obviously intended). And there was like this unspoken trust if you were the man on gong duty, or if you got to the Dragonator first - none of us noobs had beat it first try, so everybody knew the consequences of messing up if you were in the hot seat. The combination of those “high stakes” with the quest being, honestly, not mechanically difficult for a party of four, was such a great recipe for old-school online gaming fun.

@@julianadams3710 I preferred when HP didn’t scale because: (1) barring special conditions (Hyper, 140GQ, etc.), the HP pools of monsters in most Guild quests were actually reasonable to solo; with speed runners taking about 5-10 minutes while only low skill players reached beyond the 20+ minute mark (2) when you bring extra hunters, it should ease the burden but HP scaling often made fights harder since if even one player doesn’t carry their weight, it basically turns the monster into a HP-sponge for the other players (3) In addition to that, it actually made solo hunting more viable since most monsters now had Village Quest tier HP

in addition to what others in the comments have mentioned about making lots of use of artillery (i remember back in the day the accepted wisdom was to focus almost solely on ballista/cannon damage until you were in basically endgame gear, because it takes A Lot to outpace that fixed damage), one other big thing is that after jhen's spine cracks break, there is still a hitbox just at the very top of the hole that takes the full weakpoint damage (at least, it's definitely there in 3u and i'm *almost* certain i remember solo guides back in tri mentioning that too). the recommended weapon of choice back then was greatsword, part because a slow, predictable monster is easy to consistently charge attack, but also because the length and arc of the overhead charge is perfect for clipping that lingering hitbox if you line it up right, which allows you to do *way* more damage than hacking at the spine or arm (68 cutting hitzone on the weakspots vs 33 for arm/21 for body). the technique you'd see in videos would be to do a lv3 charge standing at the right spot, then doing a spin slash with A to chain into the next charge while keeping your position still, i was never actually brave enough to give solo jhen a proper attempt back in tri and certainly would've given up much more easily, so congrats on seeing it through!

Well done my guy. This reminds me when I got to "The Troublesome Pair" quest in the Original Monster Hunter on PS2 after the servers were shut down, which made me square off against high rank boosted Rathalos and Rathian in nothing but low rank gear. The tenseness of it all is maddening, particularly with that timer ticking down bit by bit. Bask in your achievement, you've certainly earned it. Also, here is a tip that (if true) will help you in fighting tanky monsters: Large Barrel Bombs are apparently damage multipliers, and hitting them right on the edge with a weapon should deal maximum damage. Try hitting just outside the model to set off the blast without actually hitting the LBB model. I was taught this trick years ago by some guys I used to roll with online, and it seems to work. (Disclaimer: I've never looked into the math for the damage calculations, so everything here could be the equivalent to holding B when catching a Pokemon, but still worth a shot!)
@Onimyst10 ай бұрын
Responding to a 2 year old comment here, but I think the reason for placing a SBB or weapon hit outside of the range of the monster is so it wouldn't trigger the damage multiplier for damaging a sleeping monster, ensuring the LBB gets it. Might be you're confusing it with that?

@alexisguillen84003 жыл бұрын
I didn’t have internet connection so I had to solo everything in this game, and beyond the times it destroyed my ship at the beginning I don’t remember this fight being hard at all. So here’s what I noticed we did differently. The first thing I do is blast the cannons until I’m out of cannonballs. When it allows me to climb on his back I do some mining and destroy the cracks just like you did. I also use the Dragonslayer and gon just the same. A big difference is that when it shows it’s tusk I usually attack it to leave it weakened. Finally phase two starts and I just ballista the tusk till both are destroyed, and from there just attack it and use gon and dragon slayer as much as possible. As for my equipment, my preferred weapon is that sword that looks like a giant glip which has about 1200 damage and dragon bonus, however I believe when I first fought the Jhen I didn’t have it yet, but I can’t remember my previous weapons much. I also didn’t use sets or any booster seeds or anything, I had the black pants from the Egyptian dog armor and the top where that cat that shoots spikes, because they together look like normal clothes in my hunter. The results where that once I managed to keep it from destroying the ship, I always repelled him, never lost even once to the timer, and eventually I started killing it all together which must be when I got the 1200 sword I suppose. So, the likely reason you had such a hard time was because you didn’t use the cannons whereas I only stopped once I was out of cannon balls, and you also don’t seem to target the tusk which I’m not sure but maybe they lower his defense or something? I just wanted the materials but maybe it played a part on my victories I didn’t know about. Anyways, for me the first phase is cannonball, mining and damaging the tusk and back cracks as much as possible. Second phase is ballista and everything seems to have gone the same. So, use cannons next time.
@Mindful7Kung7Fu73 жыл бұрын
Yes this man. I also had no Internet did them alone. Yes first few times but then I started concetrating with bombs and balistas only on the tusks, when broken i started using cannonballs. the crazy thing it worked so well that i allways fully mined him and destroy at least one back part. crazy try that dude ! Even players who played 3U don't have a clue just how unforgiving vanilla tri was. Barroth was nearly unbeatable for 80% of the new community because after a charge, he could spin around almost instantly, and it was not uncommon for him to hit you ONCE and then you can just put the control down because you're going back to camp. He also required earplug to not be stunned by his roar, and contrary to ALL monsters up to this point, his head is armored and his tail is held way off the ground. This was the monster you needed to beat to go from 2 star village quest to 3 star village quest, and Barroth is a 4 star monster. You also topped out at green sharpness by this point. Barroth honestly showed you who was boss and how to hunt.

Something to know is that you CAN use dragonator 3 times in this fight. IF you time it correctly in the early phase when he does his first side slam to the ship you can hit the horn with it. It was a speedrun strat used to break the first horn fast. This was shown by Kogath I think on his youtube channel for MHp3rd, but worked just as well for MHtri. But due to the situation of doing dps with weapon I am uncertain if it's worth to use the early dragonator or focus on melee on his back.

The siege quests in MH series is basically a dps check. Not only that, but you also need to time your damage burst right, so it casues the giant monster to flinch just in the right moment to cancel its attacks to the stronghold. All the siege weapons in those quests like the dragonator are there to help you with that damage burst. So it's less about skill but more about knowlege of the mechanism and planning. It's more or less a beginner's trap... and in Rise / Sunbreak capcom has abandoned that design pattern to make the quest more intuitive. (There's still a bit of it left in the Ibushi fight, but way less frustrating) I think it's a positive change.

And if you would've only shot ballista while he is out of reach in the second phase and ran up to him right away you can even beat him without the adrenaline/fortify combo.
@StayNightGaming3 жыл бұрын
Bounce attack damage is the same as regular damage. This was debunked well over 5 years ago.
@Yasashi25883 жыл бұрын
@@StayNightGaming okay I phrased that wrong bouncing is the result of very poor damage that's easily outdpsed by cannonballs. Bounces happen at a true damage of less than 25, big blood splashes at above 45, so it's a massive damage loss to keep attacking after you break the holes.

The biggest problem tri had was with enemy HP amounts. It was somewhat present in solo as well, but every major monster was (or at least FELT) SUPER tanky relative to earlier and later MH games. MH3U seemed to have solved it, but I can't speak for the NDS version or other 3rd gen japanese exclusive versions.

All because of how difficult is to Kill it Solo in G Rank, due to the limited time and his huge HP Pool. I always repel it but never kill it. as someone who's been playing through MH3U, it's not any easier, even with G-rank gear, it's still a pain. i'm honestly curious if you're just not supposed to use your weapon and just focus on the mounted armaments or something, but i have no idea what actually does optimal damage
@Sunaki10003 жыл бұрын
The Siegeweaponry does better damage if you have Lowrank Gear, but gets outclassed by High, and G Rank. Cannonballs stay good, but you can ignore the Ballista, if you can attack him whit your Weapon.

Uuuuuuuuhhhhh......... Kelbi deershot + Awaken, blast damage all the way to the end, you can easily defeat It alone. That doesn't look anything hard In comparison to this video tbh, In which the guy was In constant death match.
@Sunaki10003 жыл бұрын
@@emishimaru-sama6449 Did you test that? Cause I made some Testing, and using Kelbis Lv 0 Slimespam Tactic was less effective then using a Srt around Chargeattacks, only slightly by a few Seconds, but I tested it on Highrank Monster in Village. If you run out of Blastcoatings, the Monster will build up massive Resistence against it, not to speak of bad RNG not triggering the Status. So from my own Experiences testing out the Bow, its most likely not a good Way farming Jhen, but like I said, I did not test it out on the Field against him specifically.

You mean the Highrank one, or the G-Rank one? Cause it does sound a lot like your speaking about the Highrankversion. 11:14 I feel this reaction right here summarized awesomely well thrilling it felt to win against Jhen solo the first time. The burst of adrenaline, coupled with the relief and satisfaction of knowing you put in the work and you locked in and it finally, *FINALLY* , paid off. I don't think I've ever experienced something that's motivated me and given me the pure happiness that winning this battle did, and I'm actually grateful for being able to feel that good. Unfortunately the real world isn't as rewarding for some of us. Oh yeah, the fight starts to get gradually easier (or you get better?) over time in such a way that you'll likely never feel the ultimate rush that your first win made you feel, but I feel that first win is something not many hunters will easily forget.

My memory of doing this is a little hazy, but I definitely remember doing it. I used to do this in a leather set with a charm and maybe 1 loclac piece (I don't remember exactly). I would have spd gather, gathering, pro transporter and felyne bombardier. You try not to use too much ballista ammo before the land phase so that you have a lot to flinch with and a full inv when it starts. I usually used bowgun, no idea what setup. Break back with bombs, then use more bombs once it's broken and run. Before land phase you could cannon it when it was coming in to the ship instead of gong or binder and just take the hit to the ship, or if lucky, flinch it. Making sure you get the two dragonator hits before land phase is essential for saving ballista shots. Don't die because the little shits jumping on deck flinch you before a tusk swipe. That's pretty much it.

I'm curious why you ignored the Balista and Cannons, expecially with food skill and armor skills for it. Used to be how I solo'ed when I didn't have friends or couldn't find a room to join. Mh3 in 2021, simply great: both nostalgic and interesting because i never could enter in the city of loc lac. The editing is also fantastic from the script to the gameplay and especially the music in background. I watched this video at least 7 times. About the set and strats.... probably not the best, I've seen some people doing the same repel with great sword and there was who used the same set and succeed, even with a lot of time wasted, and who used a different set without adrenaline/heroics but with critical draw and succeed as well (the reasons it was so hard for you cause of the weapon are 2: Lance has a lower DPS, also at green sharpness Lance bounce on broken spine crack while Great Sword's charge and switch axe don't, also going for elemental damage instead of Raw damage against jhen is a bad idea) I don't want to say that the strategy with the ships' weapond isn't perfect but some little hints would make things easier by a lot: First : you can use the dragonator in the second minute of the quest when Jhen hits the ship with his left side of the body, most of the times with this strats jhen tries to attack the front of the ship only when the dragonator is just available again (the dragonator's cooldown seemes almost 9 mins)... With this strat you hit jhen 3 times whit the dragonator Second: in the ship phase you can jump earlier on jhen when he emerges or you can be "launched" on him by your bombs. Third: at the start of final showdown (MAYBE, im not completely sure) running directly to jhen and attack him with the weapon, instead of the ballista, is preferable Probably you made some mistakes that caused yourself having a lot more difficulties than it should be but the video that came out from this is totally enjoyable. I can't wait to get mh3 working online on my wii to complete the same siege in solo... last time i felt excited for a siege was with pursuit level 1 kulve taroth in mhw: it is very hard in solo, the monster has a very good look and it's moveset is totally not annoying.

Part breaker may have helped, I learned on tri part breaker (at least lv2 but preferably max lv) really changed my game. at first there's a big change but mixed with a late game meta damage build there's a dramatic change bc of all the stuns you get from breaking parts you can practically stun lock alot of fights, (and it makes you more money$), and if your in a group is even better bc the stuns open up for your team to focus way more on dps. It's like having a extra 2 traps bc of how long the monster is recovering from all the parts breaking, reeling back, falling over, and screaming in pain. It's glorious. Really makes it seem like your weapon is one entire class stronger than it actually is
