Adding Distance to Your Cast - How to DOUBLE & SINGLE Haul

While it is important to keep a mental discipline regarding your rod position at 10-2, your arc will begin to widen slightly beyond this point as your distance increases. However, it's important to have this mental discipline in place so that your cast won't degrade. You will find that your arc will widen to near 9 - 3 (or 170 degrees) as you continue to generate line speed with greater distance.

Thanks Dan, have a sink tip line and will be using it when a bit warmer out. What wt. tippet(mono of flouro) would be good on 7wt line. Also how long and should it be tapered or straight? Thanks Dan.

You are most welcome! I would use a flouro tippet (sinks faster)...if you are using a furled leader, you can use straight 4x or 3x flouro tippet. If you have a loop-to-loop connection, use a 7.5-foot tapered leader - helps roll over the fly on a cast. That is what has worked for me over the years. Cheers!

Typically - you can achieve a distance of 30% greater using a double haul over a single haul.

What situation would call for a single haul and what situation would call for a double haul? Seems like double haul all the time would really get your line speed going.

Sometimes a quick single haul when initially picking the line up on the water helps generate line speed. Otherwise - double hauling is best to get the line going for sure.
