Thanks for the lesson. I’m 74 and my muscle memory forgot to show up for my last birthday but I’m trying to bring him home on learning the double haul. Great inspiration from your video. Keep it up.

Small note… Matt’s stroke and haul he is demonstrating is for a long cast. And the drift he describes to allow room for the stroke, equally and arguably more important is drift lengthens the stroke. The longer the cast, the longer the stroke. The stroke length and the cast distance are critically related. Matt is using a long stroke length and (relatively) long hauls. Once an angler learns to double-haul the angler often uses quick short hauls to generate tight loops and faster line speed even for shorter distances, say 30’. One other point, Matt notes the hard stop is to transfer energy from the rod to the line. The stop transfers the energy, but more importantly the stop creates the loop in the line. The stop causes the rod tip to go down and back up, creating the loop. Thanks, Matt!

Good breakdown. I agree with everything you said here. Thanks for adding these details. It’s hard to explain every detail and sometimes I miss things.

Thank you for this …. does your left hand let the line go at any point during either haul to allow more line to feed out, or does it keep the same length throughout, ONLY aiming at increasing the speed of the static amount of line in the air? Great video - very helpful!

Thanks. Double haul now understood. You said nothing about where / when to release. Isn't release timing also important to distance and accuracy?

You are welcome ! Practice and work on making it as sharp and precise as you can. You will learn how to use different timings for different situations. For example if you hit it early you can actually use it to control how and when you open up the loop. Thanks for the support !

@@PacificAnglerTV Thank you for your answer! It means a lot to me! I have been teaching fly casting to myself by using plenty of youtube videos ( I don't know any flyfishermen) and sometimes it's really hard to find the mistakes yourself. Before I found your video, my double haul always resulted in a very messy loop (I wouldn't even call it a loop) and a lot of tangles, so I am afraid of changing my timing even the slightest. But I will keep that in mind when I will be casting large pike flies!

Hello , question for when . I can keep a straight line path with the rod tip until the stop , when i stop the rod tip , the weight of the line pulls the tip of my rod below the straight line path and it opens up my loop completely . How can I keep the tip in a straight path even after the stop?

When you're shooting line combined with a double haul, when do you know it is time to pinch the line, and begin the forward/back stroke? When it starts to drop to the ground, or sooner? Amazing video btw. Both this and the shelf vid.
@PacificAnglerTV
@PacificAnglerTV 3 жыл бұрын
Ya the second it starts loosing steam going forward. Maybe even a second before. You can gauge it.... get it wrong on one false cast and just don’t add line on the next to get yourself back in the grove.

@@PacificAnglerTV Thank you for the reply! One more question regarding timing of switching from forward cast to back cast. If you feel the slight bounce of the fly line and leader straightening, does that mean you have waited to long to begin your next forward/back cast? I have heard that the bounce is the energy leaving the line. Would love to know your thoughts.

I like these series of videos, but I’m afraid drifting isn’t the term for returning your hauling hand back, drifting is moving your casting hand back (or forward on the forward cast).

Are u letting line out as u double haul?
@PacificAnglerTV
@PacificAnglerTV 8 ай бұрын
Yes - you let line run through your fingers at the same point you would without the haul. (After hard stop behind or in front)
@kieranjones3696
@kieranjones3696 3 жыл бұрын
Just a small thing. Originally you say to first pull on the back stock, as the line is all straightening out But in reality, you're pulling when the line is not even close the being straight.

Very clear instructional video but you need to use a different term for feeding the line back after a haul as drifting involves repositioning of the rod during the pause and not the feeding back of the hauled lined as per FFI terminology.
@PacificAnglerTV
@PacificAnglerTV 3 жыл бұрын
Totally right. using the term drift might confuse a few people. I use it as the term for repositioning as well. Thanks for pointing it out. 👍
