This test vehicle also features Flyin' Miata's Stage 2 suspension system(set a hair too low for car shows) and big brake kit.
Learn more at: www.flyinmiata.com
Build List:
BBR Stage 1 Turbo system (full California spec)
Flyin' Miata Hush-O-Matic exhaust
Flyin' Miata Stage 2 suspension (FM springs, Koni Sport shocks, FM sway bars)
Flyin' Miata little big brake kit

This is one of the most beautiful cars made right now. Especially in a price range most can afford. Everything else is trying way too hard in the styling department. This will age well and is simply gorgeous.

There's a company in the UK called "bbr gti" that now sells forged pistons and con rods that lower the compression ratio to 11.5:1... And apparently it's doing well with the turbo conversion and they're starting to see reliable numbers over 300bhp... The major issue with stock mazda internals is the con rods, apparently they're the weakest link in assembly with knock causing catastrophic failure by bending the rods after just one or two hard pulls from a stationery position...

The NA was released when I was 10 yrs old. I was a mad car fan back then.. Still am, but I have autism, so as a kid, I knew everything about all production cars back then. My ma flirted with getting an NA back then, so I've had a fondness for the MX-5 (as its known here in the UK) since then. My family owned a couple of Mazda's, but never an MX-5. With the ND RF whispering _sweet nothings_ in my ears, I think the time has come to take the plunge! Particularly with that stage 1 turbo kit and the extras! 😍😎👍

Even though living in Australia means no warranty, but I like the simpler and longevity provided by supercharged engine compared to turbocharged ones. I drive my MX5 daily and looking to keep it as long as I can, the supercharger is more suitable for my situation. 200hp at the wheel is pretty good for such a light car, any more than that would push the stock transmission and differential too much.
@ThexXxXxOLOxXxXx

MrMeoow91 i agree thats why i probably never buy nonjapanese cars, it will last long no matter how much you torture them ofc as long as you keep boost low and the engine cool. plus japanese sports cars are cheap with cheap parts track them drift them as much as you like if something break you wont shed a tear.
@dudeshark2471
@dudeshark2471 6 жыл бұрын
ThexXxXxOLOxXxXx that’s extremely close minded and biased. FBO and sometimes even boosted American V8s last hundreds of thousands of miles. German cars will as well. It’s a case by case thing. Excluding maybe economy cars half the time when a car dies pre 150k miles is because of the owner.
@ThexXxXxOLOxXxXx
@ThexXxXxOLOxXxXx 6 жыл бұрын
Dude Shark american cars are amazing if they are pick up or suv otherwise ill pass. European cars are cool and all but too expinseve and expinsve to maintain and you dont really get the value for your money also they dont last as long if you have 5 yo german car sell it before you get cought into the trap. Japanese cars #1 american #2 Skorean #3 euro #4
@dudeshark2471
@dudeshark2471 6 жыл бұрын
ThexXxXxOLOxXxXx you realize American cars parts pin their technology? The SUV and pickups share the same stuff and it’s leaked all the ways through their lineups. I’d bet money as far as sports cars go a muscle car will outlast anything out of Japan. The LS and Mod motors are extremely durable and that’s why people always swap them. Reliable easy power for way cheaper. Again, German cars just take maintenance. Keep up with oil and other liquids and they’ll last. So unless your argument is that you don’t have to do that in Japanese cars, in which case I’d just assume you’re clueless, it’s like I said, a majority of the time it comes down to the owner.

I don't want to talk shit about US cars as they have proven both powerful and reliable, cars such as Mercury Grand Marquis, Ford Crown Victoria and GMC suvs and pick ups have earned legendary status where i came from. It maybe since you're from the US you see things differently, most people from around the world would agree with me i think, that whether it comes to sports cars or every day sedan's japan is and have always been the best in terms affordability and reliability.

Oh cool, I never even thought about higher compression resulting in higher exhaust velocities, which makes it easier to spool up the turbo. Learn something new every day! Man I do love the looks of the ND RF Miatas, though. Could make a good mid-life crisis car when I get to that point a few years down the road. hah!
@lechywecky
@lechywecky 6 жыл бұрын
Not sure what they meant really. If the exhaust expands a bit more before the valves open, it should just mean that it's cooler so there's less power available to pump the compressor, slow spooling etc. So they use a smaller compressor and Bob's you're uncle. Why wait until you're old? You know you're already thinking about it ;)

Strange that the direct injection is such a limiting factor in the power. If that's the issue and cost of the s/c and turbo are that much vs that little power gain, it almost seems like the car would be a bit cheaper and funner as a modded n/a car. I guess I am used to 300whp Miatas at the very least when it comes to turbo Miatas.

I️ would buy the supercharger over the turbo. I️ feel the supercharger is the clear winner. I️ would love to see this thing with some e85 would probably pickup a ton more power.
@slandon1977
@slandon1977 6 жыл бұрын
e85 would require more fuel volume for the same amount of power, and it's already limited to 200hp because of the fuel system limitations. Look online at what HP level 1000cc injectors can support on e85 vs 93 octane. HOWEVER, e85 can run more timing. The ND Miata seems to have several hurdles to overcome before it can truly be hotrodded. Perhaps an auxiliary set of fuel injectors and an ecu mod that can handle it? THEN if that is figured out, it will need a different trans according to what I hear. Transmissions are breaking at stock power levels in race conditions.

Love this setup more than the S/C Soft Top Miata. But I really like both. I just prefer Turbos for the expansion possibilities later on. That turbo is pretty damn big for the car so if down the road you wanted to say, throw forged internals and more powerful fuel system or even adding in Port Injection to go along with the factory installed Direct Injection. Since he mentioned the Direct Injection is whats limiting being able to get more fuel, then adding port injection would allow you to be able to add much more fuel without tampering withe the D.I. therefore no problems there, and also you'd be able to run much more boost (safely) because of this and and, ding ding ding ding, you guessed it, much more power. P.s. @ 5:13 You dirty man, sending subliminal messages about sex. lol jk jk but my dirty adolescent mindset couldn't help it. Sorry for my immaturity. ;P The Mockery!

Questions: The turbo has same HP as the SC, more peak-y torque curve, more peak in mid range acceleration dv/dt. Is that why Matt likes it better? It may not be faster 0-60 than the SC’s linear torque band, but feels more responsive at this (how high?) altitude?
@kleinbottled79
@kleinbottled79 6 жыл бұрын
A flat torque curve gives you linearly rising power through the rev range. A flat power curve means you are near peak horsepower any time you are mid tach or higher. More area under the curve (in the used rev range) makes for a faster accelerating car, even with the same peak power numbers. Particularly if the revs drop a bit in a corner or some such situation. The turbo car probably IS faster 0-60. Slightly. Even at sea level. Unless the turbo lag is bad enough to be a factor. The peakier supercharged car would need an edge in peak power to compete. The roads around Angeles forrest can be anywhere from sub 3k feet all the way up to the highest pass at 9k ish. But they weren't that high, probably 3-5k tops, still, the turbo would start showing some advantage there. So yeah that fat midrange, giving the feeling of power everywhere, is something that Matt admits to preferring. I personally enjoy being rewarded for revving a motor out. To each their own. Side note: for many years (still?) WRC has been limited to ~300hp via restriction on the intake. Therefore those guys find ways to make a flat 300hp from like 2k thru 6k rpm. This is part of why they perform unlike any other 300 hp cars in the world.
@richarddietzen3137
@richarddietzen3137 6 жыл бұрын
kleinbottled79 Thanks for your reply, I thought the torque and HP curves were closer, but I see now how much the BBR turbo won over the EB SC BBR tune from at least 2,500 to >6k RPM for both per Keith’s dyno posts on Miata.net. The power is equal at redline. Up to then, advantage to turbo, except for the Edelbrock warranty. Feel free to give me either!
@leanlifter1
@leanlifter1 6 жыл бұрын
kleinbottled79 A flat torque curve means that it idealy has peak or good torque from idle to red line the flatter the better. HP is fun but torque is really what people want and need as there is nothing that can replace that wave of acceleration from a well tuned torqey turbo motor.
@Bavariaria
@Bavariaria 6 жыл бұрын
Flat power curve = yes, it dies above 5000. Torque is what you feel in terms of shove, and a flat power curve means torque is falling off at a constant (and significant) rate from a low RPM peak.

And you get carbon build up, I think they should combine it with port injection if performance is a bigger factor than mpg

This would really be the perfect car if it came from the factory with 250 hp. Giant killer. The weight, design, and price are exceptional. But I want a super car killer and would pay another $6-10K for that set up. I run a track prepped Vette now, and it's a high performer, but I'd love a smaller lighter car but can't give up 400 rwhp and 10 seconds at my local track as a result.

sooo punch me if I understood this wrong, so a higher compression engine flows more volume of air thus overcomming the lag on a big turbo?
