I bought a 60 series with about 60 thou on the clock, ran it just short of 800 thou, then sold it, stupid, stupid, stupid. It had the great 12ht motor, the only thing I did was service it. Up to the last, I never had to even top the oil up, Best set of wheels I ever had.

good tip for removing and installing gearboxes in 40's and 60's at home, pull the gearbox/shifter cover from the floor and use an engine hoist/crane in through the door to lower the box down on the ground

I notice that nobody ever talks about backlash, which is a common issue with old trucks. How much is acceptable? Is it even worth worrying about? By the time you add up the backlash from the gearbox, transfer case, driveshaft, diff and axles, you can end up with 30 degrees or more of play in wheel rotation. But I doubt it's worth spending thousands to replace every single gear in the drivetrain just to alleviate the problem.
@AndyL9404 жыл бұрын
Your right it does add up. I find most of it is in the diff spider gears they get heaps of play . As long as the wheels are turning all good.
@mark20734 жыл бұрын
I bought some old 80 series axles. The rear is super tight but the front has like 45 degrees of travel before the drive flange turns. That's going to need some work.
@gtv834 жыл бұрын
instead of replacing the whole shaft it is possible to rectify the worn bearing track and mount the bearing that goes in the opposite side
@JOHNROOTHROOTHY4 жыл бұрын
Hi Simone, not really, the shaft is designed as a single piece and relaminating rarely works or lasts so you would be risking having to pull the whole box apart again.
@gtv834 жыл бұрын
JOHN ROOTH just di it in the gearbox of My Bj42 lx, the bearing of the front side of that shaft has the inner ring, so if you remove material from the shaft and go to the same size of the front side you can put the front side bearing with the inner guide.
@JOHNROOTHROOTHY4 жыл бұрын
That's a fair work around, but still not sure how long that weakened surface on the shaft will last. Given the work that my mate Si's 60 Series does it wasn't worth the risk.
@gtv834 жыл бұрын
JOHN ROOTH for sure! obviously the best thing is the replacement, but in case you need to save some money it can become a solution... anyway good job, if you treat well they are cars for a lifetime, thanks for sharing your experience. 👍👍💪💪

Howdy Roothy, I am about to rebuid the H55 and transfer in my HJ60, but I dont need to touch my clutch, can the gearboxes be removed from car but with leaving the bell housing on the engine , or would getting the clutch TO bearing be too difficult to get back on the sleeve, cheers
@JOHNROOTHROOTHY Жыл бұрын
Never heard of anyone trying that without pulling the bellhousing Paul - I know I haven't. You could leave the clutch on the flywheel assembly but if you're going this far make sure you replace the brass bush in back of the engine that takes first motion shaft ok? good luck

@@JOHNROOTHROOTHY Sorry John and the others below. I don't think my comment came across correctly. My point was that whenever we come across high mileage vehicles all across the world there is a common factor. Regular oil changes with good quality oil and TLC.
