Wow, what a video. I flew into Wick from Alesund, Norway a few years ago. Had an intermittent rough-running engine for the last hour of the journey and spent some time dismantling my carbs next to that WW2 control tower. Forever etched into my mind in intricate detail because I was pretty certain I was going to end up putting it the sea. I stayed overnight in Wick and the next day the aircraft ran fine again - never worked out what the problem was. I really loved flying in these upper latitudes - the raw isolation, and the unique weather you find up there, really makes it seem that you're sat right on top of the planet. The one thing no-one talks about with general aviation is how small it makes the world feel. Because you conscious of your position, and speed over the land, you get a sense of the scale of the earth in a way that you don't from and airliner at 30,000ft. I think if everyone understood how small this lump of rock really was, people would behave a lot better towards each other.

What a great compilation video and some obviously very competent young crew. With my brother in 1976 we flew a Baron Calgary , PA, Churchill,Coral Harbour (due weather ) Sondestrom, Iceland and on to Scotland. What an exciting trip with only NDB and D/R nav and HF radio. You guys obviously got better weather than us and your narrative is really down to earth. Eventually we carried on to New Zealand the long way home. What an exciting trip that was in the pre GPS days. Your videos bought back some great memories for me after 59 years in the saddle.. Many thanks

Hey guys, awesome videos! 230 hrs in the book here. AMEL/IA/PPL. Also a radio comms nerd. Regarding the cell signal, a quick thought is the rule on line of site radio. Useable signal for both vhf air comms and cell comms can be estimated by this formula. Approx distance in miles = 1.33 x sq rt (transmitter height in feet). So 7000 ft would equal roughly 100 miles of usable radio range plus however high the ground station antenna is. Safe travels and blue skies!

Great vid Matt! Also very happy to see you always in your flight suit when crossing the Atlantic. You'll always do well when you experience an emergency with that safety attitude! PEACE OUT!
@chriscross2611

In the North Atlantic, you've got maybe 5 minutes worth of dexterity to get your suit squared away. The torn seal on that dry suit renders it worthless, and there's no way you would survive 20 minutes, let alone the 20+ hours it would take to be rescued. Your only chance of surviving a ditching is getting that raft inflated and getting in it as fast as possible. Having that wet suit down around your waist like that risks getting it caught on something and going down with the plane. I didn't like wearing mine, but it's better than dying at sea.
@Webleys
@Webleys 5 жыл бұрын
I spent 10 years in the 1990s ferrying 92 aircraft all over and only wore the suit twice, both because of heater failure in Barons on a long winter leg from St. Johns to the Azores. When I had autopilot I'd sit with my back to the door and my feet on the right seat, much more comfortable. I only had two engine failures, both in twins and both during my last 3 trips. Went to flying FedEx Caravans for 25 years after that. Good times. Great videos.

You have cell service quite a distance away from the Faroe islands as radio waves propagate better over water than land allowing them to travel over the horizon in many cases.

What's in Haggis: 1 sheep's stomach or ox secum, cleaned and thoroughly, scalded, turned inside out and soaked overnight in cold salted water heart and lungs of one lamb 450g/1lb beef or lamb trimmings, fat and lean 2 onions, finely chopped 225g/8oz oatmeal 1 tbsp salt 1 tsp ground black pepper 1 tsp ground dried coriander 1 tsp mace 1 tsp nutmeg water, enough to cook the haggis stock from lungs and trimmings

Well done brought back a lot of memories. I am now retired and flew a lot in my middle years, logged about 600 hours. Most of my long trips in a Piper Arrow eg UK to Corsica. Towards the end of my flying I flew Jodel's - a superb French tail dragger, with just map and compass. I worked in the USA for two years and flew from Rockford IL in the mighty Piper Saratoga. It was all great fun but it soaked up a lot of my money.

13:00 Altitude is your friend with VHF/UHF radio for SMS. The radio signals at those frequencies tend to travel in straight lines, and so long as you're above the transmitter tower's horizon, plus a small amount for atmospheric bending, and diffraction, you'll receive texts. Sometimes there's tropospheric ducting, due to an inversion layer, which can also propagate those. signals for hundreds of miles.

Hello Matt, my Name is Andy and right now i am Pilot in student, doing my LAPL (only valid in EU). After i pass the exams i go further to the PPL. Watching your videos is so extremly inspiring for me and i have to say your choice in music is fantastic. The Pictures in combination with the music sparkles me totally. Your videos as well as the videos from Trent Palmer are my favorites. I also want these kind of adventures in my life (cause i always was an adventurer). Hopefully i pass the exams in the middle of 2018 and then i can start my own adventure. My Homebase is EDMJ, i do IT-Service (self employeed, Linux) for Life and hopefully soon flying for fun. Your videos motivates me every time i get up. Partially your videos are also very funny (What to do when you have to go to pee in a small airplane...GREAT) Please go on with your awesome videos, i really enjoy it! Greeting also to the other guys, from: Andy (Germany / Bavarian / Munich)

Andreas Püchner The other guys in the video are Louis and JP. Louis's channel is "Fun for Louis" and JP's is "The Candour" I think but if you go on Louis's channel he will link it in the video's they do together. The just did an around the world flight in that airplane and Louis vlogged the whole trip and they plan on doing a documentary also. Anyway the reason I commented to you is JP does some video's in German, He's fluent in German. I don't know if he has put any flying video's yet but he has talked about doing that. Just thought I'd pass that along and give you a heads up. Happy New Year and good luck on your testing!

Haggis? The sheep's stomach is just the wrapper, the skin around the thing. Sausages are made in pig's intestines. Big deal. The rest of it? Minced lungs, heart and liver, suet, oats, spices and salt. It's just a type of sausage really. Great video from around Wick! That is the shortest street, that one door has an address. For the best castles, Northumberland! Bamburgh and Alnwick. Scotland and Northumberland have a lot of castles. Not as pretty as many in Europe though (I am British, so Europe is over the channel, but I live in CA, so I am aware that's silly). So many places to see round Scotland. But flying in the RAF's low flying training area might make it a bit more interesting than you'd like.
