I have always had a love for the P-51 Mustangs so when the opportunity came up to fly in a TF-51D, I jumped at the chance! "Toulouse Nuts" is a unique Mustang variant with a full dual cockpit and bubble canopy.

The P-51 mustangs didn't stand a chance in a one-to-one combat with Me 262s. They came too late and too few in numbers. The German armies fielded the best pilots, the best tank crews, and the best infantry men. Of course, the German leadership made many mistakes, both in industrial policies and military strategies that lead to the demise of the Third Reich. Among the majors mistakes, the Germans failed to invade Great Britain to finish it off, after the stunning victory over France. Instead of pushing their advantage to eliminate a threat in the west, they turned too quickly east, targeting Russia, ignoring its massive potential and military capability. As an ironic, albeit tragic proof, Berlin was captured by Russians, the ultimate winners in the ground war in Europe. The American landing in Normandy in 1944, late into the war, was meant to have a say in the sharing of Europe, between US-led West and Russian-led East. Hence the myth of the "cold war".

I waited 18 years to get my ride with the best Mustang pilot around at the time. He won the gold cup at Reno in the 1970s. He ask me what I wanted to do and I told him all the classic maneuvers, including Cuban eights, split s, loop point rolls and simulate a turn as if we were flying in a race. He really put the plane through all the paces and was surprised I did not toss my cookies. it was with out a doubt worth the wait. Too bad the guys that fly them in WW ll are gone. They really knew how to fly them. The video is nice but when you are going over 400 mph about 200 feet off the ground in a 90 degree bank is the ultimate feeling. When we were coming out of the decent doing a Cuban eight it was all i could do to hold my arms off my legs as we were going over 400 mph. After about an hour we were heading back to the field and the pilot did five slow rolls in a row. it was the only time i felt a bit queezy as the cockpit accumulated quite a bit of exhaust. A couple of deep breaths through the air tube stopped it. What a day and pilot. outside of becoming a pilot and getting out of high school with a degree it was the greatest thing I have ever encountered. I paid the fuel in part. My cost for the ride was $112.50. He also had a P 38 but it did not have a jumper sear at that time. I sat in it as did my wife. If you ever see a great pilot feather the starboard prop as the engine was shut down in flight. The pilot knife edged the Lighting down the run way one one engine and then fired the second engine back up. These war birds are timeless and nothing beats a ride in one with a pilot that will do everything the aircraft will let him, Only problem with the Mustang is when the throttle is open it is the loudest noise you will ever hear. I took off my helmet and could stand it for 2-3 seconds at most. When you get in one and are rolling out to take off it does not sound is if you are going for the ride of your life. When the breaks are locked and the engine run to check the mags it is then you realize how much power a plane with a 37 foot wing has. My flight was in 1981 and I can still remember the sound, feeling of that Merlin, the aerobatics and the smell. What a day.

I know your joy... I've been lucky enough to ride in three different Mustangs, back in the '80s. Got a couple P-40 rides and ended up on some magazine covers, including the 25th Anniversary Issue of Air Classics. Long list of warbird rides and even some training flights. The Collings Foundation B-17 in the background of your video, Nine O Nine, was the first of three B-17 rides I've gotten. Looking forward to flying in the B-29 Fifi this July; that will join lots of other warbirds on my channel. Thanks for sharing... brought back a lot of memories.

Hi, Chris, you've had this video out for over 2 years and I just ran across it now and it brought back memories of the first time I saw a P-51 taking off, it was low and slow, then started climbing at a ever increasing angle and speed. Within a minute I lost sight of him, still climbing vertically and still accelerating. If you were to look at the data plate on the bird you rode, I'd bet you would see the name ExcalliberII remanufactured by MCMD (Mid Continent Maintenance Division) between about 1964 and about 1967. These aircraft were completely rebuilt with zero time engines and sold about $5000. Compare that to over 3 Milllion for a pristine example today. A wreck that might be rebuildable will probable bring at least 100K. Thanks for all your exciting videos, have a Happy New Year and stay safe.
