Flying a Powered Parachute vs a Powered Paraglider Trike | Which is for you?

Just what is a powered parachute and how is it different from a powered paraglider trike?
They are both great machines that will get you into the sky. They are more alike than they are different, but sometimes different rules apply.
The FAA defines a lot of terms in the very beginning of the regulations, including a definition for powered parachutes.
The FAA says that, "Powered parachute means a powered aircraft comprised of a flexible or semi-rigid wing connected to a fuselage so that the wing is not in position for flight until the aircraft is in motion. The fuselage of a powered parachute contains the aircraft engine, a seat for each occupant and is attached to the aircraft's landing gear."
There is no separate definition for paragliders, powered paragliders (PPG), powered paraglider trikes, or powered paraglider quads in the FAA regs. We talk about Part 103 ultralight rules and how they apply to both powered paraglider trikes and powered parachutes.
Bottom line, if you are wanting to fly recreationally and you just want to take someone flying for fun, a two-place powered parachute with a sport pilot license remains your only truly legal route.
It comes down to your flying mission and your budget. If you are happy flying solo, you can save a lot of money by just getting into an ultralight.
If you want the ability to fly some else, a greater flying range, easier launches, flying at night, and the ability to fly in slightly windier conditions, a powered parachute is a great way to go.

Roy… I wish I had met you 6 years ago! I was SO excited about flying PPCs! I purchased a Buckeye Dream Machine (Rotax 582) with a new APCO 500 Cruiser wing. Unfortunately, I had three instructors that I had nothing in common with and ended up feeling anxious, pressured, and belittled just being around them. I ended up selling the beautiful unit a few years later and chalked up the whole experience to a dream temporarily realized. 😐 REALLY grateful I “powered through” the stress of being around those folks and got licensed regardless and was able to get in the air. I never developed the confidence I felt I needed to take someone up. I always felt that if I had a patient and kind instructor, it might have been a much different experience. I am NOT blaming anyone (but myself) for my departure from the sport but simply wanted to let you know how appreciated your style of communication and demonstration of your obvious joy around flying is. If I ever decide to give it another go - I will be on the lookout for someone like yourself to share your knowledge and love of flying to train with. Thank you for the wonderful attitude you portray! Hey Doug, I appreciate your comments! My name is Randy though.I have talked to several instructors on line from Captain Kurt to Trevor and a couple of others. They gave me a few good pointers but insisted that I pay and get professional tutoring, hands on instructions for. I undesrand their point of view, however I believe flying with a friend who you can connect with, taking your time, learn to kite your wing and practice,practice, practice that in three to five months I will have enough hands on and my friends knowledge in me to be successful in my flight. I have already decided to get a quad instead of foot launching due to my age( 64) but I am still continue to kite my wing until I can foot launch. But in the meantime I'm building my own dream machine quad! It's a fun project for me and I have a different friend who is a fab shop owner , he and I are putting one together built out of a racing go-cart. I'll post pics when we are done hopefully in April. I have a Windtech pulsar 32mm wing with a 185R vittorazzi parajet setup! It's gonna fly baby fly! Thanks again for your inspirational pep talk.

1st thing I thought was that a trike only has disadvantages, well mostly at least, it's extra weight, you have less control yourself (when landing mainly), and not all ground is suited for wheels to land or take off on, or am I missing some things? :)

I have owned everything from hang gliders to aircrafts and got to fly powered parachutes with a 747 pilot that would rather fly his powered trike than the 747. In Florida we got lots of flight time. I want a nice inefficient but stable wing that I can fly in mid day and not worry about a collapse. The Paraplane Ultralight used a Ram Air Parachute. The guy had crowds of people flying after just watching a 45 minute video. Paramotoring is bassackwards where they start you out with an aerobatic wing doing foot launch. I would say teach them to fly with wheels, get used to it, then consider foot launching.

When I was younger I used to skydive but now I have a goal to buy or build a PPG Trike. Ideally, I'd want to be able to haul camping gear on cross-country trips so a tandem trike is probably the way I'll go. Fabricating my own trike frame that has one seat but cargo space up front & rigging it with a tandem wing with a larger power plant is one of the options I've been thinking of.

As long as it has just a cargo area and not a second seat, you will be able to fly it as an ultralight if it meets all of the other criteria.

Thanks for the Awesome video, it gives me another perspective on ppc, you did a great job explaining the differencees. I haven't had a chance to fly a ppc yet so I can't really compare them, although i would love to give it a try! I Have been a foot launch ppg pilot for a few years, but i had excellent training and a great local ppg community. We even have a ppc pilot in our group that flys with us from time to time. So most of us get about 3 hours out of a 3g tank. Some units even longer. Most of our units fly between 30-50+mph depending on your wing. You can land and take off in very tight conditions if you need to or want to lol. And you can land at around 5 mph. Engine outs do not happen often, only once for me and i have been flying quite a bit for a few years. Most of the units we fly are very good and well maintained. Also even if you have an engine out you can land just about anywhere because we can land so slow at full flair. We typically don't fly over water unless we have good flotation devices. It's an awesome and free way to fly, the only downside is you can't take a passenger with out a special endorsement 🤷‍♂️. Even though you "don't need" training to fly, it's highly recommended. And with good training you should be able to foot launch in null wind conditions just fine. I can fit my unit in my van, car, or truck, and drive to the field or just fly from my back yard and be set up and ready to launch in minutes to catch that perfect sunset.

Great video it’s so nice to see all that flat land you have at your fingertips, you see I’m from New England , about 15 miles north of Boston and let me tell you the sport of powered paragliding, or parachute , is non existent up here. There is no place to go for someone to get good training, and or check out and purchase quality equipment in this sport. There’s nowhere to even watch people fly to possibly get interested in the sport . I myself got the bug while on vacation in 2003 where I got close up and personal with a bunch of guys that were flying around and take off and landing on a strip of beach right in front of my beach house. Well that did it for me, weeks later I did my research and watched a couple of thousand videos and searched for somewhere I could get proper instructions that’s when I found out that a professional business owner with a hectic schedule like myself couldn’t just pick up and go to flight school a thousand miles away you see I was hoping to find instructions much closer to home So that’s where self instruction came in , I purchased a fresh breeze Paramoter unit , shopped around and bought a brand new ozone wing . After hours of research, I built my own super lightweight trike unit. I also bought a used small beginner wing so I could perfect the art of kiting 16 years later and hundreds of hours of flying under my belt. There is still no place for someone to go and get good instructions I have had many people beg me to teach them to fly and I absolutely refuse to do so , my advice is to go seek out professional help, Now I myself would like to take on a passenger and powered parachute looks like it would bea perfect fit for me , but once again..... no instructions near me. I’m 63 years old in good shape . Time is my enemy I just live in the wrong region If anyone out there knows where there is a class of instruction In the Massachusetts area lease drop a comment, Thanks

Ellipticals have gotten a bad rap because most people don't understand them, then they get in trouble, or hear of someone who had trouble, and blame the wing unfairly. I will make this comment short (uncharacteristic for me). I am fighting the urge to tell you how much flying means to me. I have been paralyzed in indecision for over three years now, in what ppg wing, brand or gear is the safest, but also allows for room to grow without having to buy all new equipment. I have no idea how after all this diligence, I am now facing a new direction of fulfilling my dream and celebration of life post cancer (ppc). Thank you for your video and time in making it. I smashed the subscribe button and like. Only a few weeks ago I talked to an instructor that said ppc is the way to go for me with my ambitions, but you point out that ppc is for someone wanting to fly tandem. The instructor I talked to explained in detail the cost of ppc vs ppg, with ppc costing less. I am not challenging you to defend yourself sir. I feel I just went back in time over three years after being cleared of cancer and deciding to live, only to be paralyzed by indecision once again. Please help me.

The larger powered parachutes are generally two-seat machines anymore. The lighter, ultralight versions are pilot only. And yes, the PPG trikes are generally less expensive and take up less room!

Trying to talk one of my lifelong buddies & fellow airline pilot into considering PPG vs. PPC. He's a previous PPC owner looking to sell his crappy 1948 Aeronica Champ... with it's limitations and annual costs, & come back to the more affordable, but almost as capable fabric wing side of aviation. "Transportability" (is that a word?) is in his sights and PPG blows PPC away in ability to transport. Especially so with new offerings from companies like Fly Products USA and the Vitorazzi Cosmos engine. I'm certain that he'll like PPG with a tandem exemption, way more that PPC, but YMMV. Fly safe!

I find one of our last comments a little confusing. Wheel launch in zero or near zero wind is preferred by many powered paraglider trike pilots. In no way, shape or form is it difficult to inflate and bring a modern glider overhead on a trike. It's actually trickier on foot launch and requires a fairly steep learning curve to achieve a very low or no wind foot launch. Having near zero experience with PPC, I guess I'm not really certain how it is easier aside from the fact that many PPG trike pilots hand guide the A risers on inflation. Again, it's a learned skill but not a particularly difficult one. As some other folks have mentioned, PPG is also drifting into the 4-stroke market with ever more powerful offerings while retaining ultra-light status. Recently, we're even starting to see offerings in electric propulsion with up to 1 hour flight times. I would also add that PPG is almost always far more portable than PPC. Foot launch units often break down into a size and shape that can be loaded into a compact car trunk. All foot launch units fit easily into a pickup truck bed. Even most trike units fold up sufficiently to fit in a pickup truck or even smaller vehicles. One final difference is the agility of a paraglider wing is often multiple factors higher than a PPC. Quick, sharp maneuvers with high bank angles are quick and easy to enter and control. Shorter line sets also quicken roll rates by comparison. One question I do have is speed ranges on PPC. Are any of the modern wing offerings able to vary speed in any way? Several Paragliders that I own have trimmed speed ranges from about 25 mph slow to 45 mph fully accelerated. Last I heard, Powered Parachutes fly one speed and only one speed. Is this still the case?

Thanks for the comment. I guess that it turns out that with modern wings, the gap between powered parachutes and powered paraglider trikes is narrowing. I've seen failed launches in PPG trikes. The occasions were when pilots were taking passengers. It may have been more to do with the less powerful engines and smaller props working to build up forward speed.

The definition of an LSA does not allow for foot launch for some reason. "(11) Fixed landing gear, except for an aircraft intended for operation on water or a glider." I would just enjoy the unregulated aspect of a Paramotor!

Hi John! There is no problem with flying 30 minutes before sundown. The issue is for the 30 minutes AFTER sundown. You need a strobe if you are flying an ultralight and position lights if you are flying an N-number powered parachute. I hope this helps!

I saw one of your other videos about PPC and asked about why someone would want a PPC over a PPG and didn’t know about this video, great information. About tandem though we can fly tandem with paraglider’s or powered paraglider’s but they have to be classified as a “training flight” but it absolutely is done all the time. I could see the PPC being easier and less prone to collapse however the newer EN-A and low EN-B wings are pretty damn bulletproof. I was launching in a strong wind off a 4,000’ mountain today and let my glider get ahead of me, wound up having an asymmetric collapse that popped right back out on launch, probably wouldn’t have even noticed if it wasn’t for the sound, and slight lack of pressure for a split second, it came back out that fast. But the wind kicked up to probably 20 mph out of nowhere, the risk you take flying in thermic conditions, but I’m a free flight pilot so thermic conditions is what I do, and the occasional ridge soaring, but I really enjoy thermalling and cross country type flying. Some day I’ll add a butt fan to the mix, even though I’m more interested in paragliding than PPC it’s still interesting to see what PPC is all about, and I definitely think it’s got a place, and for certain people a lot safer than PPG. Thanks! A lot of people do fly two-place PPGs and even PPCs illegally. What I try to do is explain how to do things in a way that is safe and keeps people on the right side of the law. Powered parachutes offer more stability than powered paragliders partly because they are heavier, go faster and load the wings more. Hope the collapse turned out OK. That sounds wicked coming off of a 4,000' mountain!

Very interesting comparison. There’s a new generation of lightweight trike 4-strokes such as the Aero1000 from Helvenco. Much lighter and more powerful than Generacs.

Thanks for the tip on the Aero1000! That does look like a pretty nice engine. The Generacs are great engines, but they are purpose-built for long use in generators, which makes them heavier.

Hi Roy; this was a good video explaining important PPC vs PPG distinctions. I've been involved in both PPC/PPG as a pilot, instructor and OEM, and I agree that either route is a fantastic aviation entry point. For many (myself included), powered-para flying was my aviation entry point, but also satisfying enough tick all the boxes of my aviation asperations. I do have a couple observations to make here..First I generally think it's unwise to fly Powered-Para recreationally with a passenger. There's just enough risk in the sport of which passengers cannot be fully informed. Powered para risk are certainly low enough for the passionate owner/pilot, but too high for a recreational passenger. Secondly..I'm somewhat dismayed by the general lack of powered para innovation. Innovations in gear and regulatory/training trends have drastically impacted ppc/ppg entry affordability.

Hi Terry! The risk in flying powered parachutes can be mitigated the same way risk is addressed in other kinds of flying, or for that matter, any other activity. Human error is The biggest factor in aviation accidents in nearly all aircraft. Teaching judgement is a challenge, but it is part of a good training program. Meanwhile, I share your desire for more innovation in the sport. I admire your work and always enjoy hearing about your latest ideas!

Training is more measured by days than hours since we are working around weather. And yes, there is prep work that can be done ahead of time. In fact, many instructors either encourage or mandate it!

Trikes are a LOT more responsibility to own than a PPC. Trailering-up, trailering-down, or renting hangar-space, etc. I was lucky to share a hangar under the wing of a Cessna, and was able to split the cost with him. Next time, I'll absolutely be getting a backpack PPC

Good, informative video.. I'm considering buying an older model Buckye 103. Had flight training years ago and have flown ultralights but never one of these. I'm confident that flying will be easy and intuitive for me but I have never rigged one before. Is there a video available that covers that. It's always a good idea to seek out an instructor to go over things with you. There are things he can look over on the Buckeye and the wing, as well as launching and flying techniques that can be covered. In fact, sometimes wings are rigged improperly by people following instructions from others online. That kind of thing is best gone over in person. I don't personally know of any rigging videos, although I may put one together someday. (And yes, I understand that won't help your immediate needs!) Perhaps someone else visiting the channel can help you out.

Good point. The thing is, technically, the 'parachutes' on powered parachutes are considered gliders. They are flying airfoils as opposed to the round style parachutes, which are the true simply drag devices.

Thanks for the video! I noticed that you were using an Apco chute, is it a Cruiser? I recently tried an Apco Lift 450 elliptical chute and it tried to tip me over twice on takeoff, so I aborted the takeoff!. I would appreciate your opinion explained further in regards to elliptical and rectangular chutes.

eliptical wings are trickier and more unstable on take off, that's why I got rid of my PPG trike, and transitioned into a PPC with more power and stability on takeoff

Informative and helpful. One observation as PPG guy with a trike: I believe that you stated that in calm wind conditions a parachute glider and a foot launch PPG are easier to launch than a triked PPG? if that is the statement oh, then I would like to suggest that the trike PPG like the parachute glider are similarly easy to launch in calm wind conditions. In both cases we just sit there and power up until we left off. Effortless! Actually, it is the foot lunch PPG that has been difficult time. The foot launching person has no wind to assist with lift, so they must run harder and longer, which can be quickly exhausting and result in a failed launch. you did not say anything about aerobatic maneuvers . Although that's not really something I'm and, I was thinking that with the parachute glider you trade off the ability to do aerobatics for the benefit of stability? Again, really enjoyed the content

Sorry - I got lost somehow in regards to the difference between the powered parachute and the other vehicle. I have watched Evolution Trikes on KZbin, but the controls appear to be contra intuitive for someone like me who has a Private SEL license. I don't know enough about powered parachutes to understand how those controls work. It appears that one steers with the feet, but what controls altitude? (Engine speed perhaps?). Thanks...

Evo Trikes are great! But your intuition is right, it takes a little bit of relearning for a lot of airplane pilots. It isn't impossible to do, it just has to be worked through. Yes, you steer either with either the feet or by hand, depending on the model. Climb is just excess power, like an airplane. Not a lot of pitch control, though. But there is some.

Hi Nick! It's more the other way around. In order to fly an aircraft with an N-number, you need at least a sport pilot rating. The question about how a plane gets an N-number is a big one. I need to devote an entire video to the question!

Very interesting. I own a Bensen B80M gyrocopter FAA registration number N521LW and while I intend on learning to fly it soon these powered parachutes also look like fun. The autogyros/gyrocopters do not stall with and can fly with zero airspeed (while losing altitude at an appropriate altitude for recovery to normal flight). And these aircraft look to be able to fly at nearly zero airspeed. Rotary wing or parachute wing? Maybe I'll have to learn both = )

Roy...how I ve found you: intend fly a 103 aerolite but to begin better a trike glider...here is THE POINT...both collapse...think easily...so I understand need to safe...Beginner I thought I fly with my back parachute...but think is almost impossible get an open and safe parachute from a collapsed in a stoll to end of the story lol...Roy congatullations cause powered parachute says we can fly safe even in stoll and collapsed 103 aerolite ultra light with reserve rocket parachute ...Think I need a power parachute first and thats the way to ready for take off a parapent or pwer parapent or a aerolite 103 ultra light ...think a Power parachute is safe as walk around or fly a glider...can you bring a word about how scape out of a severe stoll not be stoped whithout a reserve launched parachute as in parapent collases? people fly ppg with passengers all the time. and i sometimes take off with a light downwind with my ppg trike no problem. So not all is true what you say. never had a collapse with my ppg trike either (since 2006). There is simply to much pressure in the wing. especially with a reflex wing it is almost impossible to collapse even if you try.

Just because something is possible, doesn't make it good practice or legal. Granted, collapses are far more possible in a footlaunch than in any trike because of the increased weight of the trike itself.
