Great video! Nice view of the automatic leading edge slats in operation. The tight confines of the 109 cockpit is readily apparent, as is the limited field of view, through the heavily framed canopy. Visual tracking of EA in combat must have been challenging. Despite these and other shortcomings, the 109 was still an extremely successful combat aircraft in the hands of a competent pilot, and the favorite mount of many Luftwaffe aces...Hartmann, Barkhorn, Galland, and Rall, to name a few..

You forget the ace of all aces --> "Hans-Joachim Marseille"! By far the most talented of them all, lived to see only 23 years of age, by then having shot down 158 planes in the Western theatre! Died in 1942 bailing out of his 109 G2 Trop after an engine failure/fire.

I remember around 2014-2016 I saw a video with a guy in a very informal pair of bermuda shorts shouting something auf Deutsch while cracking something inside the cockpit before starting the engine and taking off. It looked funny and cool. Bit I haven't found that video in ages. Would that ring any bell? The video could have been older, but I remember watching it around 2015 a few times, a few minutes long if I remember correctly. Vielen Dank

Adolph Galland was a quite successful fighter pilot. I got to read (a translation of) his autobiography, some years ago. He said that 109 pilots loved them, right from the start. But each model had some weakness or problem. New model, they'd fix the existing problem(s) but a new one would show up. The 'G' model, 'Gustav', was loved more than any other, because late in the war, when things were going rather badly, and the 109 was a very old fighter, they finally made one right. It just did exactly what it was supposed to do. All the problems had been fixed and no new ones added.

***** Yes, Hurricanes did most of the work. We haven't forgotten. But Hurricanes could shoot down bombers just fine, but they were a little out of their league against 109s. That's what you needed Spitfires for. Both the Spit & the 109 could bite you if you asked for a bit more than the machine could give. Neither was quite what you'd call user-friendly, but the spit was probably a trifle better.

***** A simulator can do many things, but it's not the same as reality. Yes, we use them now in training. We did that before we had computers. Look up a Linke Trainer. But they are training tools, no more than that. We train astronauts under water, because that's the best way we can simulate the experience. But you won't hear a pilot say a simulator is the same as a plane, or an astronaut tell you being in the big pool is exactly like doing a spacewalk. A centrifuge can also put you in high G - yes. But is that exactly like doing a hard turn in a jet? Yes and no. In some ways it is.

***** I do not doubt the realism of IL-2 1946. Real life pilots are involved in the development of that game. In fact, many of the people that play it are real life pilots themselves. And now with virtual reality headsets in the horizon, flying sims can only get more realistic.

never to be called a pretty, or beautiful design. it is menacing and almost "evil" looking. attribute that solely to the way the DB series engines were cowled. how many people in the world have ME-109 on their license? just amazing the time and $ [DM} that went into it, and the courage to continue to fly it knowing its dangerous characteristics. thank you.

Awesome video, I love it!!! I saw that most of maneuvers were flown around 300kph (350 in dives). I wonder, what is the directional stability in pitch/yaw/roll (what controll adjustments need to be done) when flying at takeoff speeds, 250kph and 300kph? Is the plane wild thing at these speeds or is it rather stable airplane?

How did the Luftwaffe Aces score kills on that thing. Very poor visibility inside that cockpit. Very low seat, all I see is the nose of the plane. How come the Germans made the seat so low and the instrument panels so high. I mean you can barely see anything in front of you looking forward there with Thousands of window panels panes and struts blocking everything

Erich Hartmann used to wait until his front windshield was full before he pulled the trigger. This prevented him from wasting so much ammo and contributed to his high percentage of kills.
