Pro tip, tuck your hood in it's causing too much drag! Could save a fortune in fuel and get you another ten knots! P,s is that not freezing with no enclosed cockpit?

Talking of impressing pilots. I was flying in Scotland in gliders. The national coach took a woman up for a joy ride. They ended up at 37,959 feet talking down to the jets crossing the atlantic. Since a lot of them are glider pilots there was a lot of chatter.

Good luck getting home.

They were autogyros, towed on a cable like a kite with the windmilling rotor providing lift. This is a powered machine with the forward thrust from the pusher propeller providing the energy to turn the rotors. Same idea but 'powered' differently.

Congratulations James ...I was looking forwards to your video of the Vagar arrival ... gorgeous weather & scenery ...those islands must have been such welcome sight after all that ocean! ...so different to Norman's scary experience..."going through the post-box slot!" I totally understand that fatigue-crash ...on landing after long flights ... I had great ambitions to document my XC adventures of 2017 ... but was SO very tired each day ...decided to just enjoy the "present-moments ,places& peeps"! Love your explanations ...of your flight height, ..etc! Enjoy the well earned weather break & local hospitality! ...almost home!

The AutoGyro Calidus is available with a full canopy and a partial canopy that can be swapped out seasonally, but the only gyroplane I've seen with a completely removeable canopy was the defunct Arrow-Copter. With an open cockpit, though, you're probably going to be wearing a helmet, and you can get 12-volt heated "snowmobile suits" that will keep you pretty toasty.

Well done James, what a journey. I would love to do something like that. I’ve been in aviation a long time, commercial pilot for over 20 years. I am interested in buying a gyro and touring around Australia. My question is why did you choose Magni over other makes and models? No rush to get back to me, when your home and have time I’d love to have a chat with you about the pros and cons as my knowledge on gyros is limited. Cheers and good luck James.

Superb James. Quick question: how do you manage to film so much footage? What size memory card do you have in your device(s), and are these things permanently plugged in for power? (No negative effect on your power drain in your gyro?). Have a superb and safe final water crossing. Your adventure is amazing!

Why not install floats in case of emergency water landing? a couple hundred dollar pontoons will save your entire aircraft
@terrynorton31825 жыл бұрын
Yes, but a gyrocopter can’t hover. It’s blades are aero foil in section and this is where it gets lift from. It gets forward momentum from, usually, a rear facing propellor and not from the rotor. Having said all that some are fitted with a cyclic stick and can takeoff vertically and land but still can’t hover? Google is your friend.
@archangel91145 жыл бұрын
Why it takes you the whole lenght of the runway to take off ? I thought gyrocopters can take off and land in short spaces.
@Oooonumbers5 жыл бұрын
He was off the ground in like 1/4 of the runway. He also did a straight out departure flying the runway heading so there was no need to turn. I imagine he was heavy on fuel as well, and I don't think gyrocopter pre rotators get the rotor rpm to 100% so still need a ground run to accelerate the rotor system to 100% RPM. Gyrocopters can land in very short spaces, you are right about that.
@RoadRunnerLaser5 жыл бұрын
Fallen Archangel - In addition to what Oooonumbers has already said, gyros can get off the ground very quickly but at that point, they do not have enough airspeed to climb out. They will fly along just above the runway building up airspeed - In windy conditions both the wheels-on and wheels-off phases are shortened considerably but gyros are not really particularly short-takeoff aircraft. Landings, however, can be very, very short and it is very easy to put down a gyro in a field which is too short to get out of which makes for a lot of engine-out options in an emergency but you'd better hope that you have access to a suitable trailer to recover your aircraft.

Does a gyro have enough instruments to be flown IFR?
@RoadRunnerLaser5 жыл бұрын
jim z - In the UK (and probably in other parts of the world) gyros are not allowed to be flown IFR - They are VFR-only no matter what avionics might be on board. Practically, with something like a mini-EFIS and GPS, it would be possible. Most gyros are not even fitted with an artificial horizon, let alone any nav gauges.
@catherineburton1953 жыл бұрын
Auto-Gyro Cavalon Pro is the closest. Last time I looked into them, they had achieved night VFR certification and were expecting IFR soon.
