One of those painful games where you find yourself in your type of position and know how to play it, and many roads are open, but somehow your opponent makes the better choices every time and only 10 moves later you end up with every piece getting stuck in a different way and in the end position you can still recognize the traces of the plans you started that didn't work out.

It’s shocking that, while it seems like White has a lot of pawn cover for his king, the blockaded clump of pawns really stopped White from bringing any sort of aid to his beleaguered king.

Amazing game. Nepo played very impressively. As you said, it is very rar that a player as strong as is crushed so quickly.

Despite the great chess analysis I am always fascinated by Daniel's articulated way of conveying concepts and storytelling - I take that as an inspiration.

Ding also had a poor start to the 2020-21 Candidate's Tournament. His play here looks tentative and overly cautious, perhaps due to nerves. In contrast, Nepo seems to always look for ways to take the initiative.

Well played by Nepo, but I hope he doesn't win the tournament. We need a different challenger this time round. Many thanks for the excellent video.

I don't know if I've ever seen Ding get crushed so easily before. Probably have, but this really seemed like he didn't present any issues to Nepo. Nepo ran him over with a truck and then backed it up and ran him over again just to make sure. The look on Nepo's face when Ding made the final blunder was priceless. He looked right at Ding with an expression that said "Are you F'ing kidding me???". I know these guys are really good, but for Nepo to instantly have seen the entire thing to the end, puts just how good they really are in perspective.

Nepo's cunning plan is to win the tournament and then Carlsen won't play and Nepo is the new WC. It's ridiculous that we have to wait and see if Carlsen can be bothered to play.

Wait, what happens if Carlsen refuses? Do they just do another tournament? And aren't there contracts for these high profile tourneys? Especially between organizers and cities hosting the tournaments.

Does anyone know the game played by nepomniachtchi within the candidates (I believe it was candidates of some year) where nepomniachtchi wins the game down the exchange, only rooks and minors left of the board, and his opponents king (don’t remember who) is completely open with no pawn cover

Ding Liren, Alireza Firouzja, and Wesley So are the only ones who would stand a chance against Carlsen in a WC match. Why isn't Wesley in the candidates?
@LateCloser2 жыл бұрын
He failed to qualify. You needed to secure a place by doing well in the qualifying tournaments or by rating(Ding), or by being the previous WC challenger(Nepo), or by Wildcard(Radja-Covid exemption). Wesley's a great player, but I think he plays it too safe to get the kind of performances necessary to be in the candidates consistently and to win it.

Kinda miss the old format where every round had a “report”, focusing on most important moments of the whole round instead of a whole game. But I guess this one video = one game format generates more casual views, which is all good too

Ding only played against lower-rated opposition recently. When I looked through those recent games he played in China, I got the impression his opponents were told not to win against him, in any event not to damage the chances of the Chinese star to qualify. But even in those games a lot of middlegame positions Ding ended up with were simply bad. A 2500+GM can still lose from those positions to a near-2800. But a world-class player who has prepared for you can not. I expect Ding to finish in the second half, he is certainly not one of the favourites.
@yzfool66392 жыл бұрын
I disagree completely with your argument. First, What bad middlegame positions did Ding end up in the run-up to the Candidates? Stockfish doesn't believe you, and neither do you since you said Ding never ended up in a position that he could not win against a 2500 player ("A 2500+GM can still lose from those positions"). Second, your implication that you have to play against 2700 players or you forget how to play chess at this level, is contradicted by Nakamura's success. My counter-argument is simple. Unless someone has improved in strength beyond him in the past two years, Nepo is the 2nd strongest player in the World. Ding respected Nepo's preparation too much ("Ding, take the pawn!)", and that's why Ding lost. I do agree that Ding is not among the favorites, but it is because Ding does not believe in himself, not because he has suddenly forgotten how to play chess.
@dylanmorrison37312 жыл бұрын
@@yzfool6639 I agree with you. Also, Ding had a lot of interesting counterplay on the queenside, which was unfortunately too slow. An idea I saw while watching the game live was undermining the knights defence such that the d-file would be completely ceded to white's rook.
@davidblack29702 жыл бұрын
In addition to qualifying for the candidates there is also a restriction that the player has to have played a certain number of games within the last year which Ding had not. That's why all of the Chinese tournaments with second tier players.
