Competitors in any sport do whatever they can to achieve the most points with what the rules allow them. It's not the players' fault, drawing in chess pays off. If anything I'd blame the rules instead.

Have a huge respect for Rapport after this event. Going for interesting lines and insane positions rather than just trying to go for safe and drawing lines. Too bad he is too far out to compete for top 2. Still rooting for Ian vs Hikaru/Liren world champ :P but I don’t see Magnus giving it up

If Magnus really serious about getting to 2900, there is no way he is going to give up the opportunity to get multiple games in against a high rated super GM that he knows he can destroy. It’s basically free elo for Magnus. I get that he doesn’t want to play Nepo again after an underwhelming matchup in WCC but he doesn’t have the luxury of not playing because he is bored if he wants to get 2900. That being said, I still wouldn’t be surprised if Magnus doesn’t play in the WCC.

Unfortunately the format of the Candidates basically insists that the goal is not to lose vs fighting for wins. Especially if you're in the lead and in this case also tied for second given the narrative of Magnus. A draw ensures you at least hold position. Do I like it? No. Is it a valid strategy? Yes. But that's due to the format more than the players which is why we get some pretty boring games. Rapport is an exception, even Ali for that matter even though it's not paying off for them

Ok, hear me out, maybe, Magnus will not defend his title since he is "bored". Then, he will have to prove himself and win the candidates over, beat everyone on the tournament, then beat Ian (who would by then be the champion, if things continue going in this direction), so everything would be like a self challenge and he would be "having his fun" again! ... Thoughts?

@@noahsvirsky9962 again no...first of all if he would have lost that it wouldn't have changed the winner. First of all if Magnus will play his second place won't mean shit. Second of all if he wanted to make a draw at least he could have waited the other matchups...for example ding was completely crushed so it means that he could have least tried to win to gain even more. Then if he saw that he couldn't win a draw was very well the solution. The problem with his decision is the very quick draw that, as I said, removes every chance he had to win the tournament (which is the most important thing) and furthermore it was too fast...why don't try something (not saying to throw everything at his opponent, but at least try something. Maybe Ian would have blundered or missed something...you ever know). So yeah it was a really bad decision

My only gripe with Hikaru's draw is that they did not play out the Bongcloud draw rather than the Berlin . Otherwise , how many super GM's are capable of winning with black against Nepo who is in the form of his life ? Hikaru's decision in hindsight after the other games looks even more of a genius move .

@@anewfuture There are a lot of people like you who are completely mad about Naka's decision. They never played chess seriously and don't know anything about chess but open their mouth. At this level every player is extremely prepared and you can't do miracle with black if white really wants to draw! Moreover it''s not Naka's fault if Nepo is leading! Every player who loses with white against Nepo that is not normal! But anyway Nepo is probably the better player here at least the most prepared so it's useless to open his mouth now and just rage.

@@anewfuture I'm kinda stumped by your logic his rating is 4pts less than nepos( and up to this point he has competed the best against nepo) he's currently second and has decisive wins against alireza and caurana who if you forget were basically the favorites to win this whole thing. He's quite easily been the second best player in the tournament and there's no way you can LOGICALLY say he made this tournament weaker. As for the reason hikaru is doing this it's obvious he believes there's at least a slight chance Magnus steps down. Magnus might still do it of course but what sort of motivation does Magnus have to play? Money? Chess doesn't pay alot which is one of the reason hikaru became a streamer. Pride? He beat nepo once convincingly. There's nothing really there Etc there's nothing really motivating Magnus to play nepo

Maybe you're right but he is currently in 2nd place, maybe it's luck but luck doesn't exist in chess. So I don't understand your point maybe you hate him but truth is he's currently one of the best player in the world with 2760 Elo. Moreover I think Naka doesn't care to play Magnus..if he can play him ok it's good otherwise he just goes back to stream. I mean he has nothing to lose and take whatever he can take! Everyone would do that at the end of the time it's just about making the best results you can do that's it.

Levy, this is the second video i've noticed where you have a terrible resonance around 343Hz, probably due to mic position near other surfaces. If you can't improve the mic placement a simple EQ would help a lot (just use one band at that frequency, Q of 20 or greater then -18dB or whatever sounds good)

Been a huge blast of a video! Nice jokes here and there 😂... Tbh, I personally don't like Rapport's playstyle, he often goes for trade simplifications, well, it's not necessarily bad but he often choose the wrong trades or wrong timing trades which resulting him can only get a draw at best, from this world's candidates, I feel like he threw too much when he was actually had the winning hand most of those games... On the other hand, I didn't expect Radjabov to play exceptionally well against Ding, it was pretty much one sided in the midgame... He didn't play all that good games before in the candidates, this match against Ding is one to enjoy from this year's candidates... Nice play! I'd want to see the continuation of whom will actually get the second place, hopefully not only settle for draw on the second spot lol
