Fly along with me as I fly the FISK VFR arrival into Oshkosh for the EAA AirVenture airshow and Fly-in. I depart Madison and start the arrival at Endeavor Bridge, then merge into the conga line with other aircraft to eventually land on the runway at the airport.
Also, check out this other video describing how to setup for and fly the VFR arrival into Oshkosh.

This is a good example of how NOT to approach runway 36. You cut right across the ultralight pattern and through the shaded “DO NOT FLY” area as depicted on page 13 of the notice. The controllers aren’t talking to you before crossing the highway and you cut the corner in response to an instruction intended for someone else. This could’ve been a disaster if that ultralight pattern was full like it is many times during the day. If you really want to help people you should out a video highlighting this, as I saw a few pilots cut the corner like you did and it’s going to result in a mid-air one day.

I appreciate the feedback on this. I've gone back over this more than a few times. The controller cleared me "direct to the purple dot" to "land on the yellow". He was asking me to cut the corner because of the large space between me and the Cessna ahead on the base for 36L. However, that gap was not as large as he anticipated - or the Cessna slowed on final more than expected, I think because I could see as I approached, that the gap was going to be tight. That's when the other controller jumped in an said "you're cutting the corner - land on the purple dot". I changed my aim point - but expected the go around at this point. I would never purposely cut the corner. I only did so at the instructions of the first controller.

No the controller cleared the low wing Cherokee type before the Cessna who was south of the tower, not you. If you go back to 26:00 you’ll hear there was another low wing that was cleared down the east / west road “Cherokee type” then the Cessna, (cirrus sent NW to 27), then you. That instruction that you followed was intended for that Cherokee. Again, the typical place the tower will talk to you is as you’re crossing the highway or later. Not 1nm before the road when you can’t even see the painted circles yet. Why would he clear you to land before the Cessna in front of you? The first time the tower talked to you was as you crossed the road when he gave you the runway assignment. Then you surprised the controllers by cutting the corner, as noted by their surprise, and they called for the go around. I think the learning situation here is to be more aware of who you are following and listen to the progression of instructions down the line. (Low wing, Cessna, me, Mooney behind me) They will generally be in order. Second, the controllers are not going to vector you across the DO NOT FLY area and across another pattern of aircraft so if their instructions take you there, maybe it wasn’t meant for you, maybe ask for clarification. Page 13 is very clear to remain at 1800 and south of road N. The reason for that is the entrance to the ultralight pattern for arrivals is at 1,100 over that intersection and then north of the road N. So there can and will be planes flying under you at that intersection. The controllers won’t tell you to start down before that intersection and then have you cut through that pattern. I arrived in that pattern not long before you cut right through it that day.

The “Cherokee” that was ahead of you was a warrior N2884X. I’m not trying to criticize, but you seem to be wanting to help people and are trying to set an example which I think is great but in this case is an example of what not to do and is a very dangerous approach. If people do what you did, there will be a mid-air with a plane in the ultralight pattern. If you want to teach people I think you need to highlight what you did wrong and explain why you shouldn’t fly there as I assume a lot of people don’t actually read the entire Notice and maybe aren’t aware of the pattern that is right next to them. I saw a handful of planes too low on base over the highway or over or north of road N while flying the pattern this year.

I’ll go back and take a closer look. I really do appreciate you pointing this out. You’re exactly right. I’m trying to show how to do things right and keep everyone safe. Good lesson learned here if you are right, that anyone can make a mistake even when trying to be very vigilant. I truly appreciate the feedback. I will definitely follow up with a video on this to break it down and analyze what I may have done wrong in this. I’m definitely willing to admit when I’m wrong. Thanks again for the feedback.

Thank you for entering the arrival over the entry point (Endeavor) and not cutting the corner like I have had pilots do to me in 2022 and 2023 creating a spacing problem. And being proficient at flying even slower than 90kts when needed to maintain spacing. And having the right frame of mind for a busy Fisk approach that can throw you a curve. It can be hectic but there's nothing else like it😊.

He wasn't talking to you at 29:30 at all... Though you probably realize that by now. He said "south of the tower" but you hadn't even crossed the highway yet to even get to "south of the tower". You cut the corner and then you probably cut off the guy in front of you causing you both to go around.
@BlueSkyFlight

Yeah, it was a little squirrelly, prior to that call he told me to fly direct to the purple dot and land on the yellow… I think he wanted to close up space between me and the Cessna I was following. But the Cessna flew a wide base and slowed on the turn to final so him telling me to cut the corner backfired. That when the other controller jumped in and said that I was cutting in and to now land on the purple. I saw it all coming so the go around wasn’t unexpected
@Ergzay
@Ergzay Жыл бұрын
@@BlueSkyFlight I was talking about before that, from the moment you turned left away from the east-west road. That was the point that issues started. You apparently mistook a call directed at the aircraft in front of you as being directed at you. The call to fly direct to the purple dot was directed at probably the aircraft two aircraft in front of you. There was an aircraft right in front of you over the highway that got the call "start your descent" and another after that aircraft that was doing their base turn that got told to go to the purple dot. They don't tell people to go the dots when they haven't even crossed the highway yet. The first mistaken call was at 28:48 that was directed at someone else.

You're being given a Go-Around because you are turning WAY too late. You have to realize that the controllers are watching you and expecting a turn that does not need to be a steep turn at 200'. When you do not turn a normal rate turn then you are turning late and thus making them call a Go-Around.
@BlueSkyFlight
@BlueSkyFlight Жыл бұрын
I was planning to land on the yellow dot (half way down the runway) but at the last minute they told me to land on the purple (beginning of the runway). That’s why the steep turn. But I figured the go around was coming because I saw the spacing with the Cessna I was following was too close.

So I made a list about a week out to make sure I didn’t forget anything… and I didn’t but… I did grab what I thought was my airplane cover.., turns out it was just the engine cowling cover. He’s not really cutting.. if your aircraft can’t fly the 90 knots you’re allowed to fly at 2300 and 130 knots and then they will bring you down at Fisk… however it supposed to be for aircraft that physically are unable the 90 knots… I’ve flown a lot of hours and previously instructed in a Cirrus… just like I did, with flaps it’s doable. The guys on the ground at Fisk know that as well, so if it’s tight when they get to Fisk, they’ll just make them go back to endeavor and start again. All that said, however, maybe this pilot based on their level of proficiency is just not comfortable at 90, so I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt on that and just assume they were doing what felt safe to them.
